Rocketek DOD Military USB Smart Card Reader/CAC Common Access Card Reader Writer for SD, Micro SD, M2, SIM Card & Smart Cards/RT-SCR9

I like to keep a backup copy of my SIM contacts in the off chance I lose or damage my phone. What I like about the  Rocketek USB Smart Card Reader  is that the unit packs a lot of support into a small, very portable reader. I did not test the Common Access Card function of the reader so I can’t comment on that, but I did test the other functions.This worked great with my SIM card. A word of advice, anything smaller than a standard SIM will need an adapter that is not included. Think mini and micro SIM cards for instance. I have a mini-SIM and using a Mini to Standard adapter, I was able to use the included SIM card holder tool. The unit comes with a mini-CD for installing drivers, they are also available on the manufactures website. The CD includes a tool called “SIM Edit”, it’s easy to copy my SIM data for export and edit it too. The USB cable is a pigtail and store into the unit.Also on board is an SD card slot. No trouble reading pictures and data from that. For those using Micro-SD cards, you will need a Micro to standard-SD adapter with this unit. Most Micro-SD cards come with one anyway.Overall, works as expected for reading my SIM card and the included software more than accomplished my needs.[Review Sample Provided For Review And Evaluation]

It works for SIM card reading/writing but you have to modify the unit. (go find some sharp scissors)The problem is that the tray that comes with the unit is too short, too small. It's half the size of the unit.If you try to insert it into the unit you will lose it in there and won't get it out. Pretty dumb.So my Solution was: Pry the unit open.Then, with sharp scissors, cut the TOP part in half, right past the little plastic nipples that allow you to snap it back together.Put it together, put the sim card in (get an adapter set if you have something smaller than a standard SIM)Install the CD software and Bingo-Bango you're ready to go.You wanna get that blue light on the left blinking! A large part of my five-star rating goes to Rocketek customer support. The first card reader I got didn't seem to work. I could not use the included CD to get the drivers (it was a mini-CD my drive would not recognize), and I couldn't find them on the Rocketek web site. I contacted customer support and things started to turn around. Benson directed me to the correct part of the web site, where I found the drivers. It turned out this was not the problem though, and after a little more troubleshooting Benson offered to send me a new card reader without any prompting from me. It showed up in about ten days, and I was immediately able to make it work. One other note: as indicated in its name this reader can also be used for SD, Micro SD, M2, and SIM cards; even when my first card reader didn't seem to be reading my smart card I was able to use the SD slot to move pictures from an SD card to my computer, so the reader was not total loss in any case. However, now that I'm able to fully use it I don't hesitate to recommend it. And not to worry: Benson will take care of you!

Works great, however the SIM card adapter is way too short. You have to split open the reader and cram the adapter over an inch beyond where it fits. The same to remove it. It seems like some adapters are the right size and some are short. Quality control issue on product consistency.

I works quite well. I use it to check email and get on some DOD sites. I wish the cable was a little bit longer so that I see it easier when it is connected to my computer. This would help me to remember to take my CAC out of it and put it back in my pocket. Lol.

I purchased this CAC reader because it seemed to have decent reviews but I received a faulty reader. It lights up like it's reading the CAC but it doesn't read it at all! I thought maybe it was my drivers or certificates but I plugged in another CAC reader and it started working instantly. I don't recommend this product to anyone. I hate wasting money and I don't want anybody else to waster their money on this product.

Product work for a week after receiving it. Now it does read the CAC. When you wiggle the cord the lights go on and off on the base unit. Poor design.

I bought this for 1 reason: to read a SIM card. It won't read a SIM card and I don't think the tray that holds the larger SIM cards will work either as the tray will not reach the contact points inside. If you push the tray in too far you will have to split the case apart to retrieve it. There were no instructions and the mini disc will not work in my MacBookPro. The website had limited resources. There wasn't a manual and only a single driver for Mac OS X, which didn't work. I am not completely surprised as this is fairly typical support for a generic Asian company.
