Hard water is water that contains calcium or magnesium mineral ions often in the form of carbonate. These ions do not pose any health threat, but they can engage in reactions that leave insoluble mineral deposits. Hard water mineral deposits, or scaling, is the precipitation of minerals which form lime scale. How to Descale? Fill the kettle with 1 cup of vinegar or lemon juice and 2 cups of water. Boiling the liquids and leave it for 2 hours, then use cloth to clean and wipe. Rinse the kettle with clean water, and dry with a soft, clean cloth. Repeat as needed. Note: Its normal if your kettle exposes spot or rust on the stainless steel bottom after the first use, if the water quality in your area is so hard. Here are some steps to descale the kettle: 1. Unplug the kettle and pour out all water. Make sure the kettle is cool. 2. Squeeze half a lemon into the kettle, or add 1⁄2 US cup / 118 mL of distilled vinegar into the kettle. 3. If the kettle has thick scale buildup, scrub the kettle’s inner walls with a non-scratch scrub sponge. 4. Add 2 US cups / 473 mL of water. Boil the mixture. 5. Pour out the mixture, then wipe off any remaining scale with a non-abrasive cloth, sponge, or cleaning brush. 6. Repeat as needed.

My electric kettle upgrade
My capresso electric kettle finally bit the dust when the lid came apart into several pieces that I couldn’t quite get back together. This Cosori (?) kettle was Amazon’s Choice and fit all of my criteria for a kettle upgrade:1) large enough to fill my airpot without refilling. We make coffee by Melita filter drip system2) a simple spout and lid that are easy to fill from my sub zero interior filtered water filler.3) wide mouth for ease of cleaning.4) simple contemporary styling.5) ease of operation - minimum moving parts to come apart.6) Fast boiling.7) black and stainless materials8) stable unobtrusive base9) simple switch10) BONUS! Blue led lighting that matches my Macintosh audio equipment! When my new Cosori pot arrived ... sadly on a several day delayed delivery, not on my usual PRIME 2-day delivery ... it met my every hope and expectation. The styling, fit and finish (with one exception discussed below) are top quality. The base is stable, lays flat without any cord interference. The base has ‘grippy’ rubber feet and it stays put. I was worried about the (all stainless steel) spout strainer and lid operation, but was pleased that the strainer is rigidly fixed to the lid and does not ‘get in the way’. Lid operation is from a simple thumb button that opens the top, and the lid seals tightly with a gentle push. The on-off paddle switch is simple to use and is easy to operate. The pot glows blue when on, and has an auto shut off. You can SEE when it’s on, and don’t have to worry about forgetting the kettle overheating. I didn’t time-it, but the kettle boiled 1.7 L of water in just a few minutes - comparable to my old Capresso.I like objects that I use every single day, to be top quality and easy to use. This kettle exceeds my expectations. Time will if it holds up, but the fit, finish, and function suggest this will be a member of the family for a long time. My ONLY complaint is about the ‘look’ of where the handle glued to the glass pot. See photo 5. When initially cleaning the pot, I saw something that looked like mold on the interior of the pot ... but it just turned out to be a somewhat sloppy glue job between the handle and glass. Not a highly visible feature, but looks odd inside the pot.So far, I am thrilled with this purchase. Thrilled with everything about its appearance and operation. A very nicely designed and fabricated kettle.

Elegant, technical perfection!
I’m a tea drinker – Brit/Aussie – prolly had tea from the get go instead of milk/formula! I’ve boiled water from stovetop to electric Breville and Braun and everything in between. Based on a well-known TV cooking show that reviewed 10 electric kettles, both glass and metal, I ordered their winner and the runner up to determine which I liked best. They were their #1, the OXO 8710300 Cordless Glass Electric Kettle, and #2, The Capresso 259.03 H2O Plus Glass Water Kettle. Turns out, neither of them passed muster for me. The OXO was the better of the two, but my hand (medium sized) could not get inside the carafe to give it a good clean – ridiculous! The Capresso, same thing; add to that, it was very cheaply made and I felt the cheesy plastic removable top would never hold up to constant use. I returned them. Enter the Cosori; what a delight! It’s well made of only food grade stainless steel that comes into contact with water (not plastic), including the filter, unlike the OXO and Capresso. The carafe portion is high quality borosilicate glass known for its very low thermal expansion, which means it will not crack under extreme temperature changes like regular glass. It’s also the glass of choice for high-end restaurants, laboratories and wineries. Gotta say, I had THE BEST cuppa today in a longgg time – nothing like glass to boil your water in! The kettle has auto shut off and when operating, it's blue light reminds me of a sci fi spaceship! I highly recommend this kettle for functionality and good looks! You won’t be sorry!

Suggestions For A Great Experience
Original Review in Sept 2019: You always read about the bad ones, but ours seems to work really well. We are very impressed with how fast it heats up water (we probably do 20-40 ounces at a time). We tested that it shuts off, no problem. Had it for over a month now.6 Month Update: This kettle is GREAT!! I re-read some of the 1-star reviews. One was a mistake. From the looks of the others, most are not using enough water, or using all the water they boil, or not filtering the water before use.7 Month Update: We never had water deposits and we never had to clean the kettle, until . . . we started using an off-the-shelf bottled water (Arrowhead). All of a sudden, scum on the bottle, cloudiness, stuff floating in the water. Before, we had used water out of dispensing machine (blue Glacier water dispensers outside various markets) and never had a problem. If we take that nice new bottled water and run it through a Britta filter, we're back to no deposits and no cloudiness.Suggestions:- if the water gets cloudy or you have to clean the kettle, start filtering the water (Glacier dispensed, or try Britta).- always start with the water level above the 2nd mark.- put in enough water so that when you're done, the water level is still to the minimum level. The heating plate is still putting out heat so if you pour out all the water, the residual heat is going to create problems.- after the water boils, let it sit for 15 seconds or longer before pouring. When you pour, the heating plate is uncovered, and again, it may have too much residual heat. You might even pour some, re-level the pot, then pour some more. We're talking about taking an extra 3 seconds as you're pouring, so it's not a great inconvenience.- when done, open the lid so the water on the glass evaporates. I guess you could pour out the remaining water but we never have.Yet Another Update Feb 2020 - Using bottled water from the store (Arrowhead), the Britta seems to take about half of the deposits out, but we're still getting some. Switched back to dispensing machine (Glacier) and it solves this problem. AND YET ANOTHER UPDATE ... after changing the Britta filter, most of the deposits are gone when using bottled water.
