Used on a S&W 617 , works great, would purchase again!
My smith skills are probably medium kitchen table smith. I was able to change the 617 front sight in about 15min. This really isn't hard but you do need to go slow and take your time.First you need to get the pin out of the OEM site. Normally I would use an actual punch but didn't have one this small and couldn't find one to order. After getting some guidance from the forums. Just take a paper clip, trim it a little shorter so it will fit all the way through the hole but doesn't need to be like 3in long. A few simple taps from the brass hammer and it slid right out. It doesn't need a crazy amount of force or pounding.I used my nylon drift punch. Place it on the front of the OEM sight and give it a few taps to push the front sight towards the front of the muzzle. As the site starts to drift towards the front of the gun it will then pop up from its round base and then comes right out.The Hiviz site will probably need some fitting but again, pretty easy just go slow. I knocked off the sharp edge of the rounded part that will slide into the site base. This helps it slide in. I then took my fine stone and would give it 1 or 2 passe on each side. Then test it, repeat..... It should be a little snug. Rounding these bottom edges will help it get started in the base easier.Once it's ready to start going in, give it a couple more taps and it's in. Use your nylon drift punch if you want to slide it a little more forward or backwards.Once it is set use a simple clamp or a couple wraps of painters tape to make sure it is held in place. Take your drill bit and on your lowest setting give it a few turns from one side, then a few turns from the other side.... Repeat this until the two holes meet in the middle. I DO NOT recommend attempting to drill it strait through from 1 side. This is where it can be real easy to get off angle and make an issue. Coming from both sides help eliminate this issue.Slow and steady. Once it is on, they are awesome, and big improvement for accuracy and quick acquisition of the site. I would purchase again!

Easy to install
Using very carefully 1/16 pin punch get the pin out just enough to grab it with pliers. The #54 wire drill bit worked perfectly.

Good improvement vs stock front plain black sight on a S&W 617
I won't waste anyones time, first the negative. It will cost a little bit of money to buy a small enough drill bit and probably a Dremel type chuck and a drift punch to remove / pre drill the undrilled new sight. I figure all said and done it might cost 25 dollars to install this sight yourself if you don't own the right tools. I had a simple solution.I took my gun I had just purchased at my local gun store and had them install it for me, they had the tools, the expertise to do a fine job, as an added bonus, they installed it for free as I had bought the gun there. The sight is a night and day difference, I bought the green, it is so much easier for my old eyes to see the front sight now. I put two small white dots on my rear sight to make it more visible. The price was great too. Do not hesitate upgrading your stock 617 its a no brainer. This is a complete 5 star sight, it's just not quite as simple to install as others.

The sight works great but I gave it four Stars because it doesn't ...
The sight works great but I gave it four Stars because it doesn't really fit the raging bull and had to be epoxied onto the weapon

Perfect fit
Perfect fit. You have to drill it with a 1.4mm drill though, which is easy enough using a dremel tool.

Good sight
definite improvement a little bit of work to install on this model but definitely worth the price and a clear improvement on the fire arm

Great Product - My installation instructions included with review (long).
The HiViz for the S&W 617 need to be drilled to accept a roll pin that will secure it to the front sight mount. You can pay a smith to install it for $20 - $30 or you can install it yourself if you have the right tools and skill level. I’m not a machinist or smith but I’m comfortable with making modifications to my firearms. I installed the HiViz on a S&W 617 in about an hour. Here are instructions if you plan to DIY:Tools/Materials needed: .050 cup tip punch (Brownells); a 2”x2”x3/4” piece of plywood; small hammer; 1.35 mm (.053) drill bit with a 1/8” shank (get at least two drill bits, available on eBay for about $1.99 each) and a variable speed Dremel tool. You will have to reuse the OEM roll pin.The OEM front sight blade is secured by a roll pin that should be driven out with the .050 cup tip punch. The pin should come out easily with several light taps. Once the pin is removed, you can tap the front sight blade out with the piece of plywood and a small hammer. Place the plywood on the back of the blade and tap it forward with the hammer until the front edge of the blade clears the barrel, then using the plywood again, tap the front of the blade upwards. Use Kroil or similar if the blade is difficult to remove. You don’t have to and shouldn’t have to use plyers to remove the blade. You may want to very lightly sand the sides of the HiViz tab where it will sit into the groove of the front sight mount on the gun. This will help with the installation because the fit is very snug. However, don’t take off too much. The HiViz was made to be somewhat snug in the mount. Also remove a little material from the base of the HiViz tab to ensure a flush fit between the sight mount and the bottom edges of the HiViz. You’ll only need to take off very little from the bottom of the tab (1/64” or less). Next “eyeball” the HiViz so that the front end looks somewhat flush with the front barrel and start to sit the HiViz (by hand) into the groove of the front sight mount (note the optic side of the HiViz faces the rear sight). Place the plywood so that it is flat on top of the HiViz ensuring that it covers both ends (to prevent damage to the fiber optic cylinder). Gently tap the plywood until the HiViz bottoms out in the mount. Hold the gun up to a light source and check if the HiViz is seated flush with the mount. If not, you will need to take a little more material off the bottom of the HiViz tab. Remove the HiViz from the gun using the same technique that was used to remove the OEM blade and take off a little more material from the base of the tab (light sanding may do it).Reinsert the HiViz into the mount with the plywood and hammer as describe above if it was removed for adjusting. Check that the front of the HiViz is flush with the front of the barrel. If not, use the plywood and hammer to adjust horizontally as necessary. Finally, lay the plywood on the top of the HiViz and tap lightly to ensure it is flush with the mount. Now you’re ready to drill the hole through the HiViz tab for the roll pin.Using the holes in the front sight mount as a guide to drill the hole in the HiViz tab start on one side of the mount. Use a low/medium low speed on the Dremel and carefully start to drill a hole in the HiViz using very light pressure on the Dremel. Be careful not elongate the hole on the mount. Drill about halfway then drill from the other end of the mount. Take your time. The HiViz tab is soft metal and it won’t take much drill a hole straight through. CAUTION: TOO MUCH PRESSURE OR HIGH SPEED WILL BREAK THE DRILL BIT. Use the .050 punch to check that the hole is aligned then insert the roll pin and you’re done! The HiViz is a big improvement versus the OEM front sight the S&W 617 came with.Note: Some use a .054 drill bit for the roll pin hole but I went to a .053 drill bit instead to get a snug fit when reusing the OEM roll pin.
