Woman and Nature: The Roaring Inside Her

A must read to understand Man vs Woman
This book was recommended for background for my new painting “The Major Vessel” (woman). It is outstanding!!! Provides a dramatic perspective on the foundation on which man built a jail for a woman’s tool and place in society. Read preface and all that follows to page 1 to understand the voice Griffin gives this book. A read for men as well as women, if the man can handle it.

Most important book I've read
Of course I was already aware of some of the misogyny in our society. What author Susan Griffin did, in 1978, was describe the process in Western culture by which women and nature were subjected to a male patriarchy. I know that women already know this, but this read shows how deeply it's imbedded in our society. She writes in her 2016 preface to this new addition that she dedicates this book to those beings whom Descartes claimed it would be ridiculous to imagine as having souls.

Important and memorable
This book was required reading for a graduate level somatic psychology class I participated in back in the mid-80s. I've never forgotten it. She has taken ordinary and unremarkable material and placed it next to seemingly unrelated, equally unremarkable material in such a way as to cause the reader to suddenly see both sets of material from another previously overlooked and awakening angle. She writes with an artist's or photographer's eye. For the most part, she leaves the conclusions to us...letting the dance between the two sets of information open little windows of consciousness that let in life and light. Over the last 20 years or so I have returned to it again and again. A beautiful and extraordinary book, both content and style.

Changed my worldview ...
This is one of the 3 best books I've ever read. It deeply changed the way that I look at myself, society, and the world we are a part of.This is a beautiful book -- besides the information content, the writing style is simply beautiful ... I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

I believe that this book has great potential, but the editor should be questioned about ...
The lack of coherency in this book is rather upsetting. It is difficult to find any sort of idea flow inside of the book, proving an infuriating read. I believe that this book has great potential, but the editor should be questioned about how it passed any checks.

Insightful, important feminist classic
I bought this book because I'm studying representations of science in the work of an eighteenth-century female writer at the moment. The author I'm studying was greatly concerned with women's place in the natural world and also interested in what we would term ecology now (although I don't think the term existed in the late eighteenth-century). This book is a feminist classic and provided so much insight into woman's position in the natural world (and how the author feels man sees her as belonging in the natural world). It was an incredibly useful book to read for my studies. At the same time, it was utterly and completely bonkers in parts with a really big grudge being held against all those men dating from the 14th century to the 17th century and beyond who burned women at the stake as witches. (I'm not saying it was right for men to do this, but it might be time to let it go - the mistakes of history and all that...) I really would recommend this book - for both the incredibly insightful message it imparts, but the entertainment value as well.
