Hilarious Sounds (and Educational) for My 18mo Son!
My son was skeptical as he can get frustrated matching shaped pieces into their proper fitting slots...ex: triangle prism into triangle shaped hole. Lately, if he doesn't get something on the first try, he get's a lil annoyed. However, he was immediately drawn in by the sounds. The (3) shapes (circle, triangle, square) make a unique sound when dropped into the proper slot. They make an even better one when the entire toy is flipped over and the shapes dump out. The latter sound brings hysterical laughter and the desire to do it all over again. The shapes have small holes that draw in air as they move down the shoot. Side note, when I take one of the shapes into my mouth and blow into it, it sounds like a kazoo or duck call, adding entertainment. He was already familiar with circle, square and triangle and call's them out each time he inserts one into the slot, and now is comfortable shifting the shapes around and trying different slots/angles until he is successful.Considering that this toy helps with dexterity, patience, identifying & organizing visual information by learning shapes, AND delivers belly laughs...it is an absolutely steal! Especially compared to other items I've purchased (elsewhere) that never seemed to catch his attention or keep it longer than a day.

Simple and wonderful early toy
As a toddler mom and early childhood special educator, I am always looking for toys that will support development. Play is the work of children, after all!Shape sorters like this one are fabulous for addressing visual performance and fine motor skills.I love this shape sorter both in my professional work and with my own little one. Let me tell you why...1. It has a smaller field size than many other shape sorters (i.e. it only has three shapes as opposed to the 6-12 many other similar products have). This feature makes it a great early shape sorter to help children understand the concept and access some success before transitioning to a more complex sorter.2. When a piece is placed in the correct slot, it produces a silly (but not annoying) sound as it slides down to the bottom. This provides immediate feedback and reinforcement! With both my son and my students, I have found that this feature increases motivation to engage with the product, and more engagement means more learning. Learning should be fun, right?!This simple toy does a great job of supporting early fine motor and visual performance skills (and can also be used to address shapes and colors). It’s a staple in my home and in my classrooms and therapy bag!I have removed one star because, after a few months of use, one of the pieces in my son’s shape sorter stopped producing a sound when placed in the box. We still use and love the toy but would love it more if it continued to work completely properly.I recommend his product for children in the 6-month to 2-year developmental range.

Discontinued :( Buy before its too late!
I bought this for my son at the recommendation of his occupational therapist to get him started on shape sorting. She said to start at 12 mo and it should be mastered by 18 mo. He has mastered this at 14 mo. and I think a lot of it is due to the design of this toy. HE LOVES IT. He loves the funny little whistle type sounds the shapes make as they go down the tube and he likes to roll the sorter itself on the wood floor. His favorite thing is to run around with the shapes blowing into them to make the noise himself. We clap every time he puts the shapes in correctly and since he can't take the top off, he has actually learned to manipulate the shapes instead of focusing on trying to take the lid off the way he did with the cheap fisher price one. The only thing is that he broke the whistle mechanism on the little yellow circle so it doesn't make sound anymore. I called Battat to ask for replacement pieces and the customer service lady told me that they have discontinued this toy and that spare parts are not available. I am really glad we got this toy and I would highly recommend it. It is the best shape sorter I've seen around and I haven't seen anything similar to this. I considered buying another in case I have other children one day but I think ours is good enough quality that it will last a long time (even if one piece doesn't whistle anymore who cares). It has really helped my son master shape sorting quickly.

LOVE this toy for "cause and effect" teaching, but took FOUR toys to get TWO working ones.
This toy would get five stars if quality control caught all the defective ones. I had this toy for years and it was a big hit with my babies... then we lost a piece in a move. I got on amazon and got two for twelve dollars each (one for a gift): the square didn't work in both. Did the returns process. One replacement was fine. The other: the triangle didn't work. Luckily, two had the same color theme, so I was able to switch out the good pieces for the defective pieces, and I ended up with two working sets out of four, even though THREE out of FOUR were defective. If you're willing to play with those odds, go for it. For me, it was worth the returns process as this toy is quite fun. OKAY it's not going to entertain your baby for hours - no toy does. But it is an educational toy, and baby has to do more than wave her hand to get an onslaught of lights and sounds and motion for entertainment. These kinds of toys are getting few and far between. This toy can be used quite early. My current young'un is 8 months old. She cannot sort these by herself, but she likes to pick up the shapes and blow in them to make the kazoo-like sounds. She likes to play with the shaped beads on the base unit. And her siblings guide her hands to sort the shapes correctly. I like this toy because she actually has to DO something with this toy.Incidentally, this toy was my hearing impaired daughter's favorite toy as a baby. She would take the shapes with her everywhere when she was crawling and toddling, so she could blow in them and get that buzzing kazoo-like sound. She didn't care for electronic sounds as much as this funny buzzing sound. Interesting.
