Review of Blue Exorcist vol 1
Rin's a little hot tempered, but his temperament is directed toward good things, but to others not so much. To other's it appears as though he's a bum with anger issues. He gets into fights a lot and can't hold a job. Rin gets into fights because they're for a good cause, but try explaining that to the FATHER. The man whose raised Rin and his brother, Yukio, is Father Fujimoto. So Rin's getting ready for an interview and is heading off to make himself a decent, respectable man. Until he encounters the jerk he fought the night before who found it amusing to kill pigeons with his gang. Hush money's presented because like most jerks, he has rich, well-known parents. Rin turns it down and things begin heading south. The guy's been possessed by a demon, which Rin believes are bogus. The guy's trying to fately harm or kill Rin, which ever comes first. Suddenly, after years of knowing he was different Rin's true self comes out. Within a whirlwind of action and exorcism from Father Fujimoto, Rin's informed that he's the son of a powerful demon, Satan to be exact.Rin must hide from Satan and all the demons who know of his existence now. But a turn of events causes Satan to appear and Rin to unleash all of his powers held within a sword. Rin unleashes his powers so he can be strong but it wasn't enough.Rin not only catches the eyes of all manner of demons, but the eyes of the Knight's. Knight's of the True Cross Academy to be exact. Coming to kill Rin the goofy looking director of the Acadmey doesn't give Rin much of a choice. Until Rin declares he wishes to be an excorsit like the Knight's.Finding the idea amusing and a little ingenious the director, Mephisto, declares Rin can become like them. Of course everyone's stunned and uneasy of the notion. But the road Rin wishes to take will not be easy.Rin sets out with his brother, Yukio, to the Academy only to find more surprises. Not to mention his fraternal twin's not wishing to speak to Rin. So Rin has to sort of persuade Yukio to talk.Welcome to the world of demons, Satan, teenagers, and more. There's some gore in it but it's not too intense, though some may find it a little disturbing. Rin's world just got opened up to him and he finds out that he was the only one excluded from information. There's some cussing in the book, no romance scenes so X out sex. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am going to continue reading the volumes. If you enjoy demons and exorcists, action, and turmoil then do check this book out.Now to read on with the series and surf Amazon for the rest of the volumes. . .

Excellent first volume but contains a few embarrassing errors
This review is for the Kindle version.I was first introduced to Blue Exorcist through the anime in Spring 2011. I loved it so much that I started reading the manga through scanlations (this is all that was available at the time). In the years since I've become quite the expert on all things Blue Exorcist, and there's a certain degree of quality that I've come to expect from this series. Part of the reason why I subscribed to Shonen Jump online is to read the latest Blue Exorcist chapter every month in official, legal English, and after a long time I finally decided to purchase all of the to-date released volumes in English.Katoh-sensei's series is beautiful and an example of shonen manga at its finest, and it is not for her work that I must downrate this volume a bit. Rather, VIZ did not do their best on this English release and that's a serious blunder on an otherwise perfect volume. There are several mistakes on the names of characters, such as Shiemi being introduced incorrectly as "Murayama" when her family name is Moriyama (which can be seen correctly printed on the character files a few pages later). In addition, several pages are much lighter than others, that is to say that the ink looks washed out (almost like a computer scan) and it's jarring between the other, normal looking pages. While these issues are not major enough to have ruined my enjoyment of the volume, they are embarrassing for a professional release, especially for a well respected company like Viz Media. I do so hope that in later printings the mistakes will be corrected.Overall, this is a very faithful translation and production of the first volume of Katoh-sensei's amazing manga.

“I need to become a respectable person.”
Orphan Rin Okumura and his brother Yukio were raised by famous exorcist Father Fujimoto. What Rin didn’t know was that he was being protected from the secret of his true nature and status as the child of Satan himself. After a heated argument leads to a dramatic and dire upsetting of the status quo, Rin vows to fight his dual heritage and become an exorcist himself. It won’t be easy…Blue Exorcist takes a solid central idea and really runs with it. The key, as with any great story, is in the characters. The opening chapters firmly illustrate the current conditions of Rin’s life and naturally convey the motivations and frustrations behind his attitude and actions, as well as those of Father Fujimoto. The second half of the volume establishes his brother Yukio as another vital character with his own distinct views, goals, and personality. This all works together to ground the plot and action and make everything engaging. And there’s plenty of action to get into. From dealing with bullies to facing the truth behind his situation to training at school, Rin’s journey contains a lot of chaos and it’s all well done. The tension is kept up nicely and the entire atmosphere adds nice layers to Rin’s internal conflicts and difficult choices.Blue Exorcist strives to transcend it’s typical Shounen trappings and elements with depth. And so far it’s succeeding.

Amazing!
I really enjoyed this. I originally bought it because I wanted to read the manga to see how it differed form the anime and also because the first season of the anime had an amazing ending then in season 2 they acted like the ending of season one never happened! I recommend this to everyone who loves manga and it won’t disappoint!

Great read
Like a lot of people I'd started watching the anime then decided to purchase the first three manga volumes and I'm glad I did. The artwork is lovely and easy to read, and A LOT happens within just one volume. Though exorcism is a very heavy topic Kazue Kato does it in a very easy to understand way throwing in lots of light hearted commentary along the way so everything isn't so heavy and dark all the time, which is one the the main things I love about this series. The characters are all incredibly likeable especially the main character Rin Okumura. I also love the little bonus comics at the end of the book and a little section on demons and the small character profiles are a delight. I definitely recommend this series to any anime or manga fan, I think once you start reading this you're definitely hooked.
