I bought the BOOGIIO Wire Tester RJ45/RJ11 Cable Tracker for basic network troubleshooting, and it works exactly as expected. It’s very useful for checking cable continuity and for tracing Ethernet or phone lines through walls or patch panels without disconnecting everything. The device is easy to use, even if you’re not a professional technician. The LED indicators clearly show wiring order and help detect open, short, or crossed cables. The tone generator and probe are accurate and loud enough to trace cables in a rack or office environment. Build quality is decent for the price, and it feels solid in hand. Indispensable tool for a home wiring job in a house with lots of existing unlabeled wiring. This saved me countless hours of trial and error. It was relatively inexpensive but comes with a lot of accessories for just about anything you would need. It feels a little cheap in the hand but I don't plan to throw this around or toss it in a bag with other heavy tools. It could use a nice padded carrying bag but I would recommend this unit for any homeowner.

I bought the BOOGIIO RJ45/RJ11 wire tester and cable tracker for some basic network troubleshooting, and it worked just as it should. I used it to check a 300-foot run of Cat 6 cable going out to my shop. The tester confirmed that the cable itself was intact and helped me figure out that I had accidentally transposed two wires in one of the connectors. It is easy to use, even for someone who is not a professional network technician. Just plug it in and watch the LED indicators. They clearly show the wiring order and can help identify open, shorted, or crossed wires. The build quality feels a little questionable, and I am not sure how well it would hold up. For occasional home or farm troubleshooting, though, it gets the job done and is well worth having around.

So it reminded me of toys that used 9V batteries from the late 70's to 80's but it did the job I wanted and passed some tests I put it through. My first task was to trace a thermostat wire in a wall and it did that well enough. The wire was routed across studs and I was able to figure out where it crossed to save opening up the wall except exactly where I needed. I also tested it's range on a long extension cord and tested some RJ45 cables with it. No problems. A couple things to note, the metal tip on the receiver isn't the most sensitive part. It actually reads better at the base of the metal tip. If you can attach the alligator clips to two wires in a cable, you'll get a much stronger signal than with just one (or two) on one wire (two on one wire was weaker than one). No help if you are tracing a specific wire but if you're tracing the cable it can help. The LED does not really indicate a signal unless you increase the sensitivity. It seems you have to turn up the volume to increase the sensitivity. That gets obnoxiously loud. Plugging in the headphones cuts down on the volume while keeping the sensitivity up but the headphones actually get pretty loud too. I think I might plug in a dead set of headphones to kill the sound altogether and THEN make use of the LED to indicate signal strength. It would be nice if it had a visual-only option. Maybe I'll make a modification. No case to hold all the pieces but the box it came in works nicely for that. Overall I am pleased with it. Hopefully it lasts a while.

So, it's inexpensive, and it makes tones on wires and lights up if a wire has continuity. Exactly what you were after. Down-side, you have to use the included earbuds to hear the tone. Which, if you're in a wiring closet waving this thing around at the end of your arm you've just pulled them out of your ears and won't hear the tone. Which is annoying. Anybody using a wire toner to find a circuit is not, repeat not, doing so during a funeral, church services, or at the ballet. The earbuds are thus necessary but a great hassle to keep in while toning. The signal strength is a bit weak, in spite of using 9vdc batteries which should give it a little more juice to work with. Continuity checks on ethernet wiring? Perfect tool! I've been a network engineer for 30 years now, I use Fluke products at work because I'm not paying for them. At home, on my dime, this does the job and if I break it I'm out the cost of a Happy Meal. Which, if you use it to tone a 110vac outlet to a de-energized breaker box and then happen to flip the breaker before remembering the tone generator is still in the outlet? Yeah, you're out a Happy Meal. Buy two of these before working on something that isn't low-voltage. I just wish they would have let that built-in speaker in the wand, you know, speak. Like it wants to do. Like it was made to do. Like it was born to do. Other recommendation: get four 9vdc rechargeable batteries because when you slip these into a tool pouch (which is not included and, really? How much can a nylon pouch actually cost?) the sliding switches will invariably slide and run the batteries down, and you will only find this out when you pull the pouch from your tool bag in Reva, SD in a -40F evening trying to figure out why an ethernet jack isn't feeding the WAP in the only motel in town, only to discover the nearest 9vdc battery is 40 miles away. For this kind of money, carry a spare and that includes the batteries too. To Sum, it's inexpensive, works, and is mildly inconvenient. I'd spend a few more bucks on one that doesn't require ear-buds or headphones.

This particular one I just ordered works great. I have bought several like this only from different manufacturers - look pretty close and I'm running about 75% work great and 25% have issues. I have bought these for several lab techs and sometimes the emitter is broke and some times it's the reciever. If one breaks you can pair the good part with another kit. They are inter changeable with other brands that look alike. So don't throw away everything if one part isn't working. For this one I have two things I'm not thrilled with - 1. It doesn't include the black case that every other Kit I have bought, comes with. 2. It's wires are too short for both the receiver and emitter's 9 volt Other than that, this was tested immediately and works. I'm using it as a backup because I've had too much wire tracing to do lately - setting up large labs for social distancing and bringing people in, and the other techs work off hours so we can't just trade off jack tonners if on fails. Happy with what I got but annoyed as heck that it doesn't have a case so can accidentally be bumped on and waste the battery. It says no case in the description but with the others, they were sent cases regardless. I don't think I bought from this vendor before.

If you're doing any type of data or voice wiring just get this kit and save yourself some time and energy if you have a problem. I do a lot of Ethernet wiring and need a kit to track down wire runs and problems. This inexpensive kit has saved me hours of time and climbing through attics. Use it to positively identify wire runs and connectivity of the pairs. Very functional and economical. Battery life is excellent. Couldn't be without this doing my job.

Piece of junk, its "working" but doesn't do the job. Needed to trace the path of a thermostat wire, it gives a signal when 1/2 inch from the wire but just puts out a low signal anywhere else. Could not follow the path behind the drywall. I made my own, worked great. I had a 12 volt relay so I wired 12 volts to the coil through the normally closed contact so that it buzzed when power applied. I connected the positive side of the coil to the wire I needed to trace. I then got my portable transistor radio on AM that picked up the static it was generating to follow the wire.

So I’m a dual ticket electrician and have done communication cable in my career. This thing is awesome. I was swapping over a land based dish internet system to Starlink for some friends and it traced out wires in a bundle.l in 30 seconds. Tested pairs properly. Major time saving and very easy to use.

Function well, easy to use and find the cable. However, the voice is low and housing is not quality. Anyway enough for using in hobby job

Great little piece of kit, loud enough to be heard, makes an easy job of locating cables, the cable tester part is a little basic but as this was purchased for the cable tracker part it does the job fine. Recommended to buy if you need a cable tracker. Both units take a pp3 battery each and you can use rechargeable batteries (Amazon basic pp3 rechargeable are great)
