How loud is this? I'm looking for toys to entertain my 4 year old on a long flight, but don't want to irritate anybody around us.

Its reasonable, it can record about 10 seconds of whatever your 4 year old says and repeats it - the volume of it is not disruptively loud imo

Why doesn't it repeat my voice sounds foreign when played back

Press the record button on the side of the serpent's head , hold it in while you are speaking. Short phrases are best. Release the record button when you have finished what you wanted to say. After repeating your statement it will makes that slithering sound.
