Q: Can you use this on polyurethane shoes?

If I polyurethane you mean CORFAM shoes the answer is yes. However if it is a high gloss shoe you might be better off using patent leather cleaner. Often times that is acceptable on that type of shoe covering. On my formal dress shoes I have also used Windex.

Q: Should the top of the wax be discolored almost like a Petri dish?

My experience with the shoe polish was to dip the applicator into the can and rub the excess on the shoe. It was black in the can and when rub on the shoe, remain black. No discolor.
