Nice for the entire family/ Comedy, Romance and Action All Rolled Into One.
If you're looking for comedy, romance, and action all at once, then this is the movie for you. I rented this movie through my Amazon Prime Account because I've watched it before and wanted something I thought my entire family would like. Normally we watch movies through other online streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu, but they don't always have everything we're looking for . Since I was in the mood for something other than a movie catered towards my 8 and 11 year old, I figured this choice would be family friendly enough. This film is set in 1957 and the main characters are the stylishly elegant, Lauren Bacall and the down to earth, boy next door type, Gregory Peck. It's your usual opposites attract, guy meets girl and they fall madly in love hard and fast kind of film, but what sets it apart for me is the menagerie and mishmash of short musical numbers (just enough if you're not into that genre), high fashion (and Ohhhhh...the fashion is to die for), old school mobsters (but not the gory in your face kind of mobsters), romance and comedy (both actors did an awesome job...especially since I had really only seen them both in serious roles) and enough misunderstandings to thicken the plot. There really is no character development that I could see, just a really nice, lighthearted, family movie you could sit down and enjoy. My family really enjoyed . The streaming was pretty fair (there were some buffering issues) and all-in-all, I'd rent from Amazon again. I'd definitely rent this again.

This movie has been an iconic favorite of mine since I first saw it as a ...
Bacall and Peck are two careerists from two different planets....fashion and sports. They've got undeniable chemistry on screen. The story showcases the sexy and hilarious interplay between two ADULTS navigating each other's foreign terrain and trying to make it all work. This movie has been an iconic favorite of mine since I first saw it as a teenager because of Gregory Peck's comedic acting and Bacall's exquisite wardrobe created by Hollywood designer Helen Rose. Her costumes showcase what a LADY at the top of her game looks like! Check out a mink coat Bacall wears to a pro fight...none of you have ever seen a mink or is it sable...styled like this. And the scene is unforgettable! Helen Rose runs neck and neck with Edith Head in her mastery of Hollywood costuming. After the fashionistas see this film they'll want to know a lot more about Helen Rose and maybe think about how much we all lost when America adopted the androgynous gear of jeans, indecent minis and sweats! This movie is a pro's master class about what true "chic" is all about and how a woman, not a girl, carries it off. For the rest of you the film's a great way to spend two hours watching another master, Vincent Minnelli ply his trade. You're in for a good time.

A great film with an undercurrent of sadness
I have seen this beautifully made film many, many times and never gettired of it. I hope eventually all of Vincente Minelli's films come outon Blu-ray. They deserve to be seen in every bit of their gorgeousdetail. Even this film's flaws make it richer. Gregory Peck's acting assportswriter Mike Hagen is stiff and lackadaisical and LaurenBacall also seems somehow preoccupied (possibly with her husbandHumphrey Bogart's poor health). But their personal malaise as actorsreinforces one of the central themes of the film, that is, the nearimpossibility of creating a truly compatible marriage. The sexuallyambiguous character of Randy Owens (Jack Cole) also undermines (in agood way) the gender stereotyping that Mike Hagen and his buddiesdesperately cling to. Dancer Lori Shannon and producer Zachary Wilderare the only true adults in the film; it's their eventual pairing atthe end of the film that gives it a sense of emotional completion.Designing Woman also presents a wonderful cinematic vision of New York;it evokes a time when the world of musical theater and Broadway playeda central role in American popular culture.

Two Serious Actors, One Light Hearted Romance
This film is a light hearted romantic comedy starring two serious actors. Lauren Bacall and Gregory Peck gave good performances, (obviously displaying their range,) she acting a costume designer and he a journalist, marrying after a whirlwind courtship. Even though they find their lives are far apart on the spectrum of life, they try very hard to accommodate the others lifestyle. Only when Delores Gray and Chuck Connors enters the picture do they begin having problems. I won't give any more away as the film is certainly worth a watch but when you do, give a notice to the lovely wardrobe designed by Helen Rose. Lauren and Delores wear them well. The four stars come in because the fight scene towards the end of the movie was so unbelievable as was Gregory's bodyguard.

A Don't Miss Comedy!
This is hilarious! Bacall and Peck are so simpatico it's easy to understand why they were such good friends in real life.Peck, who we're so used to seeing in serious dramatic roles, like Twelve O'Clock High, has a natural flair for comedy, and it's marvelous to see it play off Bacall's perfect delivery. Plus, let's be frank - they're both just so gorgeous to look at!The premise is very clever: they meet and marry very quickly and then find they have to adjust to each other's disparate lifestyles, friends and schedules, which include, among other things, a past (but not too past) love and issues with the mob. Add some very talented character actors into the mix and a really well-choreographed fight scene and you'll be adding this to your list of favorite comedies. Some won

Peck and Bacall do Tracy and Hepburn, effectively.
The great Vincente Minnelli directed this delightful comedy about a sportswriter and a fashion designer, played by Gregory Peck and Lauren Bacall, who somehow get married, then have to deal with mayhem in their respective careers as well as in their relationship. She has to contend with the pressures of getting her costumes ready for a show, while at the same time suspecting her hubby of cheating on her with an old flame, played by Dolores Gray.Meanwhile, he has to deal with the mob after writing unflattering stories about a crooked fight promoter. This Oscar winning scenario was written by George Wells, and features a well choreographed fight scene finale. The supporting cast is top notch, with Tom Helmore as Bacall's right-hand man and ex-lover, Chuck Connors as a thug, Jesse White as a hustler, and most notably, Mickey Shaughnessy as a punch-drunk boxer turned bodyguard. The opening credit sequence is gorgeous, and the entire picture has that characteristic Minnelli touch.

Great transfer of this smart and oft poignant film.
Definitely a comedy, but not without a strong social conscience, style, and purpose. Finale is something to behold and wholly unexpected.
