WHY do they Fail?
Update 2018-10-14: Fourth distributor second distributor from this seller is working. Talked to couple of other people Saturday that have had the same experiences. They say if you get a good one it might last 12 months tops. I have two out of four that work now, so I have a backup, a necessity with these distributors. They stated that DUI is the way to go. With so many choices who knows. I'm waiting on the Holley HyperSpark. This is the third amc 258 distributor I have purchased recently from different sellers, only 1 out of 3 worked. All have been identical, other than color of cap, internal electrical components are stamped the same, everything is identical. All sellers that sell a distributor for an amc 258 are selling the same distributor despite the claims they make. Not just on Amazon, also the big name car parts sellers as well, who claim it is their own custom built distributor. The one from this seller did not work right away. Then it worked for 5-10 minutes. Shortly after the engine heated up fully, the distributor would stop working. Allow it to cool for 5-10 mins it would run again until it got warm again, then shut down again.Reading reviews on other websites as well as Amazon, combined with my own experience, and friends experiences. We have completely dissembled and resembled with new electrical components, to only have them fail in short order or still not work. Some reviewers have found theirs to short out when going over bumps, eventually causing a failure. Something I have also experienced with the first distributor I purchased. It is a hit or miss if you get a good one or bad one. Since it appears all the various named amc 258 distributors seem to come from the same manufacture, or at the very minimum, assembled with identical electrical components. There is clearly some sort of manufacturing defect, and or no quality control.Currently this seller has the lowest price. Paying twice as much from a big named seller will get you the exact same distributor. Unless you go with the much higher priced MSD or Holley soon to be released HyperSpark. It might be a good one it might not be a good one. Might last awhile, might not. I am tired of getting towed due to these distributors failing. Then replacing the burnt electrical component to only have it short out again and ruin another module. I have connected directly to the battery to eliminate any issues with switches, relay's and or wiring. Same exact problems.I actually purchased this one so I could carry a back up. I installed it to run it and keep the other one that currently works as a back up. Not surprised it was bad straight out of the box, though still frustrating due to the waste of time and effort. It is not a problem with the sellers. It is clearly a manufacturing defect. Which is why I wanted a backup. But kinda hard to find one that works out of the box.I am to the point I am going to drop the coin for the MSD or wait for the Holley HyperSpark. I really would like a cheap backup though, as I am paranoid now, since I have been towed more times in the last few months than in 40 years of driving, due to the distributor failing. Most important when purchasing one of these distributor's for an amc 258 besides the distributor gear must not be hardened. Is the sellers return policy.

Super hot ignition perfect for your Jeep!
Hot ignition, exactly what you want for your 258 Inline 6. This along with the Redline Weber carb install are the two best things you can do to wake up your Jeep motor.Install was super easy, but I’m a pretty handy guy.You need to install this properly. Make sure that You do enough research before attempting a distributor swap. If you get done and things aren’t right, it’s because timing or firing order are incorrect. Distributors are pretty simple mechanical/electrical components that don’t always come “defective”. More often than not it’s installation error.Product performance.Performance wise there was a sudden increase in response and overall power throughout. It’s a wonderful upgrade for performance and power. A good road test provided the following. Ripping through all the gears, I noticed that acceleration was super responsive and quicker. At freeway speeds - response was increased as well as power. A good benchmark is to get to your top gear and at a moderate rpm floor it. See how much power you have to increase from X speed to x speed. Compare the before and after results and you will be able to tell the difference.Start up is now immediate. With stock ignition the motor would crank over for a few seconds before starting. Now it’s immediate. Crank/start. No more chuga chuga chuga vroom. Now it’s ch - vroom!

Works well out of the box for my jeep amc360.
Simple replacement for the points style OE distributor on my 75’ wagoneer. Allowed me to delete all of the goofy and failure-prone ignition components that are mounted on the fender well. I️ did opt to re-curve the distributor using a morso brand re-curve kit; as I️ felt like I️ wanted my mechanical advance to start coming in earlier. The vacc advance canister on this IS ADJUSTABLE. So if you don’t know if you should or should not be running ported vaccum vs. manifold vaccum, please look into the issue or you will potentially be missing out on performance and economyand engine life will likely suffer. HEI style distributors are a GM technology and they are super simple, reliable and offer a decent performance upgrade; but you should learn how to tune it for your set-up or you are kinda defeating the purpose or replacing your old system. That being said, this dizzy ran great out of the box. I️ removed the gear from the stock distributor and put it on this one. I️ was also able to click the head so that the vaccum advance did not interfere with the PS pump and it’s belt. It is a somewhat tight fit, but it does fit with no problems.

Great buy to cost
Ok, so I installed this in my 1989 Jeep wrangler YJ with the 258 I6. I have nuttered the jeep beforehand and I have ripped out every inch of my wiring harness that is not necessary. This product was just as good if not better than any other DUI distributor I have installed. The advance has less turn than other competitors I have used in the past. This makes it easier to tune but mind you the engine needs to be in good shape before you think you will have the same results. If you are not replacing the cam then make sure you pop the gear off this Distributor and put the last one back on. If you see any abnormal wear on the old one save yourself some headache and replace the cam too. NOTE the gear that came with my distributor was NOT hardened. I cut through it pretty easy if you were wondering. Don't listen to everyone that says they cant drill through it because understanding metals is a whole different ballgame. This is a good buy but do not expect a monster jeep just from this product alone. It will wake up the beast though if you have been running a crappy ignition system.
