The opening sequence of Thunderbirds is itself a masterclass in Gerry Anderson's marionette hyperbole: who else would dare to make a virtue out of the fact that (a) the show is in colour and (b) it's got puppets in it? But everything about this series really is epic: Thunderbirds is action on the grandest scale, pre-dating such high-concept Hollywood vehicles as Armaggedon by 30 years and more (the acting is better, too), and fetishising gadgets in a way that even the most excessive Bond movies could never hope to rival. Unsurprisingly, it transpires that the visual effects are by Derek Meddings, whose later contributions to Bond movies like The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker echo his pioneering model work here.As to the characters, the clean-cut Tracey boys take second place in the audiences' affections to their cool machines--the real stars of the show--while comic relief is to be found in the charming company of Lady Penelope and her pink Rolls (number plate FAB1), driven by lugubrious chauffeur Parker, whose "Yes, milady" catch phrase resonated around school playgrounds for decades. (Spare a thought for poor old John Tracey, stuck up in space on Thunderbird 5 with only the radio for company.) The puppet stunt-work is breathtakingly audacious, and every week's death-defying escapade is nail-bitingly choreographed in the very best tradition of disaster movies. First shown in 1964 and now digitally remastered, Thunderbirds is children's TV that still looks and sounds like big-budget Hollywood. In this box set: All 32 episodes on eight discs, plus a bonus DVD featuring "The Thunderbirds Companion", an exclusive documentary with interviews and behind-the-scenes footage. --Mark Walker

Parker, do call international rescue.
Reviewing this is going to make me cry! You see, this was one of the last videos I watched snuggled up with a soulmate (he's also an x spy)! I think spies really do watch animated cartoons and movies for ideas. Hahaha...maybe there's covert intel in this one, so if you want arisen to watch lots of movies...here you are!PS I'm not really completely bonkers, (Amazon have promised to tell me a joke if I review six) <- this could be their esoteric joke, but I can't explain it to you, as six has a licence to kill...and might shoot me if I did! Lol...no I haven't been drinking, and no, I don't do drugs either. It is a great video but I'm very sad atm as missing someone, despite everything. My writing always gets contained or ruined in some way (no idea why!) so if you ever get to read this...I'm very surprised.

A classic show that has aged well
Its Thunderbirds, its a Gerry Anderson show, what more do I need to say. Mr Anderson's finest hour and as someone once said his special brand of technology porn. Big aircraft, giant machines and explosions! The amazing quality of this production can be really put to the test by closing your eyes, as when you just listen to the quality of the performances and soundtrack you can really appreciate that everyone involved wanted this to be the very best that was technologically possible for T.V in those days. At £30,0000 per episode (in the 1960's) it was an expensive show but you see where every penny went 'on screen'. I recently met some of the original cast and despite everything that they have done since, they are rightly proud of Thunderbirds. If you've never seen this T.V show, please do not be put off by the awful 'Spy Kids' style movie of a few years ago, this is the original and best.

God Bless International Rescue
Wonderful cult classic 60's kids (and adults) TV series purchased on amazon video. All episodes from seasons 1 and 2 in full 4:3 aspect ratio (not cropped for widescreen TV's) are now available for me to stream. All 32 of them. And boy, does that make me glad. I rated the series 8 out of 10 on imdb and have given the series 5 stars out of 5 on here. The series is also available on Blu-Ray but has been cropped to a 16:9 widescreen ratio which means the loss of some of the original TV footage. Some people may prefer the widescreen format but I prefer the format as originally broadcast in the 70's and 80's (my era). I was able to obtain all 32 episodes of Thunderbirds for just £9.99. What a saving over the cropped Blu-Ray currently selling at £27.00. F-A-B. Virgil !

As good as I remember the first time around
Our 5 year old is an avid viewer of the new Thunderbirds series and so I thought I would get this and show him Thunderbirds 1960s style. Much to my surprise he actually loves it as well preferring this to the modern series. I guess they thought kids had a larger attention span then as each episode is about 45 mins long (so more in-depth stories) and not 20 mins like the new ones. For me watching them back they were as good as I remember when I was a kid but also when you realise the first series was filmed in 1965, its quite amazing they are shown using things like smart phones and digital screens etc which are all common place now.

Don't let your child grow up without Thunderbirds
I bought this for my Son's third birthday. Having been born a year after this series was released, i grew up with Thunderbirds and so did all my friends. I give thunderbirds top marks because little boys absolutely love it, and it instills into children a lot of great virtues that we don't have in today's society. Jef Tracy is a billionaire industralist who uses his wealth to put together a secret rescue organization to save people when all conventional help is thwarted. His son's; John, Virgil, Gordon, Scott, and Alan pilot the 'Thunderbirds'.Little girls enjoy the show because of Lady Penelope - International Rescue's London agent who is often the secret conduit to orchestrate rescue's. She has a gadget laden pink Rolls Royce and a driver,"Parker",to assist at all turns. Having watched this with my Son, I came to realise how important this show was to my social development. It introduces toddlers to the real world, where bad things can happen, and people can and do get hurt and injured. However, all these explosions, crashes, and accidents happen to puppets and models which is less traumatic for a little boy to deal with. Often the accidents happen because the victims are not being responsible and suffer the consequences. A good example is the episode where two little boys are trapped in a mine because they did not tell anyone where they were going. Of course international Rescue get them out, but at no small risk to themselves. No one dies in Thunderbirds; bad things happen to bad people but they always live another day. Those at most peril during the episodes are usually the resuers themselves, but this stoic determination in the face of danger is what makes the tracy's great role models for children. Because they are a secret organization, they never recieve money or undue praise for a rescue. They are merely content with knowing they did all they could to save people's lives (they always do)and although living in paradise with everything they could ever need, they are content to have have lives fulfilled by knowing that they are making a positive contribtion to the world at large. I am well content with any of these characters being role models for my son, even Parker the reformed jewel thief!!

Five, four, three, two, one...
I used to watch these episodes on TV when I was a kid. Today I have my kids discover them and they like them! Everybody likes Gerry Anderson's series, Thunderbirds and others. At the time Thunderbirds were made, Gerry had a vision of the future in which everything is highly explosive! Hence the need for International Rescue. The details on the sets are amazing: all those machines, rockets, futuristic airplanes, control panels, scaled-down objects, vehicles, etc. Every puppet is dressed with sophisticated clothing and accessories. The best part is, it's not animation! Everything is real!
