Better than expected
Everything I've tried in this oven has turned out better than expected and it is easier to operate than I expected as well. The instructions are clear and well presented. I virtually never read the manual first, but felt I should with this product as I was completely unfamiliar with the convection cooking process. I found the manual well organized and straightforward. Perhaps it's been updated to this clear format recently since some other reviewers were not as impressed with theirs. My copy actually says that when microwaving popcorn, it is best to set the bag on an inverted pie plate on the carousel to elevate it a bit. Apparently, the microwave beams are focused somewhat higher than in a microwave-only oven. This is fine with me since I keep a Pyrex pie plate in the oven anyway to catch drippings from grilling operations. This makes cleanup a breeze.I didn't expect there to be onscreen instructions for most operations, but I'm very pleased with them and haven't had to refer back to the manual at all. I've found the screen display easier to read than indicated in other reviews (it helped to remove the protective film in place for shipping, and not to stand really close to the unit but a few inches away). In addition to microwaving operations which are a no-brainer, I've used the automated functions for grilling and roasting to assess the result and see what timing the oven used. Twenty minutes seemed a long time for hamburgers, but they were perfectly done. Two large chicken breasts cooked beautifully, as well. The salmon steak was also grilled to perfection. Although the weights of these items didn't exactly match the choices given, the results couldn't have been better. For example, the salmon steak was ¾ lb and I chose ½ lb rather than 1 lb, deciding to err on the side of less cooked, knowing I could use the `minute plus' button to extend time if I wanted to. I like my salmon medium so I was very pleased with the result without adding any time.I've worried forever about the hot air convection process drying things out, which has kept me from trying this technology sooner, but I couldn't have been more wrong. The cooked food is much juicier than when cooked in a standard oven, and not greasy like when sautéed on the stovetop.I purchased the Sharp oven to gain counter space by replacing both an ancient toaster oven and a too-small microwave (but not my toaster), and also to avoid using my regular oven for small portions. I'll probably end up using the Sharp a lot more than I'd planned since the results thus far are outstanding. I like that the unit vents at the back rather than either side so I can put it up close to the wall (they say to leave 2" clearance) on the side where it is most convenient for me to open the door. The motor extension in the back keeps it far enough from the back wall for air circulation and still leaves about 5-6" of counter in front of the unit. The outside of the oven gets warm during grilling, but not hot. The inside gets hot, of course, so potholders are needed to remove cooked contents. I'm glad I converted to this technology and the Sharp oven was a great choice. I based my buying decision on other reviews and appreciate the input as it helped me know what to look for and helped make my convection education easy and rewarding. I definitely recommend this oven.

Extremely versatile
I acquired this microwave when I was moving to a flat with limited kitchen space, and my primary reason for the choice was that the Sharp model was multi-functional. Since I've begun using it, I happily have ceased to sing a requiem for the toaster oven, separate grill, and other items I was 'consolidating' in this purchase.I have used the Sharp microwave for grilling and roasting, as well as normal microwave functions, and the results are better than I could have expected. Grilled and roasted foods are extremely tender and juicy - at least of the quality one could expect from a conventional oven. I have had similar success with cooking vegetables.Reheating muffins and breads has amazing results - they seem fresh baked and, unlike breads normally heated in a microwave, do not harden in a minute. I have used the convection feature for preparing breads, and had especially stunning results with preparing a frozen chicken pie. I suppose the surrounding air from the convection oven was the reason, but it seemed like a fresh-baked meat pie. There are a few drawbacks, which would not compromise my five star rating because of the great versatility and high quality of the unit overall. The 'auto' roast, defrost, and grill features are very convenient, as is the prompting (telling one when to turn over the meat, for example), but they are very limited in the weight restrictions. For example, if one is defrosting ground meat, it has to be a certain weight - significantly more than that of a single hamburger. Though grills and roasts would mostly fit in to the specifications, this is a drawback for defrosting, where one must estimate times and key them in manually.Another difficulty I have experienced, when grilling on the rack, is that drippings which fall either on to the carousel tray or a pan placed under the meat can become badly burnt and baked on. This was slightly disappointing for my intentions of preparing gravies on the side. My single attempt to do so meant I had to soak the pan overnight and then scrape. The grilling results are wonderful, as far as the effect on the meats, but there is a great deal of smoke generated. Whenever I grill, it sets off the smoke alarm - probably best to roast, then only grill at the end.I would advise anyone purchasing this microwave to read the manual in full. The capabilities will not be realised otherwise. I actually use the unit less for 'standard microwaving' than for its other features. One further comment: the Sharp microwave cookbook, which is advertised in the manual for the unit, is useful but not specific to the multi-functional machine. It contains only microwave recipes - none for grilling, roasting, or convection.Overall, and considering that it can replace several appliances, this microwave is an extraordinary value.

Does It All and Does It Well
Love this product!! Got it after a powersurge in our area blew out my kitchen, I was left with a only a gas stovetop. While I was waiting for the insurance and new appliances, I got this hoping for a microwave and maybe some convection. This oven was a super surprise not only is it a great microwave it actually grills, bakes, roasts, and reheats like a dream, and faster than my conventional oven. When you put a roast in this oven (yes I said a roast and I mean of beef, pork or a chicken even have done a turkey breast) you put it directly on the great Metal rack that comes with the oven. The roasted piece of meat comes out crisp on the outside juicy inside and soooo quick. You can even microwave stuff sitting on the metal rack, crazy but it works perfectly, no sparks or anything!!Cleaning this is a breeze too!! The turntable come right out as well as the pedestal it sits on. Both are metal and can go in the dishwasher if you want, After you take those out there is nothing in the oven but a lower range element like in a electric oven and that flips up and out of the way so you can wipe right under it. The entire inside is shiny metal which cleans up with a sponge no scrubbing just wipe away and its clean.I was so surprised by how great this works and would buy it over and over.
