Great knife, poor coating.
Would be 5 stars, but.....That coating is horrible. It chips off, its way too thick. It makes it hard to cut with. But it's easy to remove. On the picture you can see what it looks like now. I removed the coating, polished the blade and forced a patina. It's an excellent knife and excellent value now. I like it much better than other knifes close to this price. Condor Bushlore, moraknivs, etc... this is a far superior knife once you fix it up... not to mention it comes with a sheath, sharpening stone, and small ferro rod.

Unbelievable!!!
Anyone complaining about this knife could win a million bucks in the lottery, and would complain it wasn't a miilion and one. This is the most incredible 'best knife for the money' you'll ever get!$30!!!!!....And you get a fantastic sheath with a sharpening stone and fire starter kit! Then, you get a magnificent hunk of steel, in the shape of a knife, that could tackle all of your camping/hiking/bushcraft/etc demands!!This thing is SOLID!!!.....Built like a tank!!!....I LOVE the grips on it!!!This isn't a complaint, but it does have a little weight behind it. But I'm a pretty big guy.....so the weight and size of grip isn't a factor to me.I got it FAST, and it has a good edge to it. Not 'shaving sharp', but that's fine. I don't put any of my knives to stones, for a razor sharp edge, unless it's a knife I need that kind of edge for. Some folks balk at any knife you can't shave with, which personally I find ridiculous.Anyway. Point is, as long as I have this knife, for the purposes I bought it for, I'll never look for, or need, another knife in the same category.Thank you Schrade, and the sellers of Schrade, for this perfect knife/deal!

Not for tough bark...
...or batoning. The manufacturers video shows batoning, but this knife failed, quickly. Dry wood with mostly bark...Survival knife? Definitely not the survival knife for rough county you want to depend on.Bushcraft? Not gonna use this for dressing small game. I'd be afraid the edge wouldn't hold up against small bones.Camping? Not sure I would want to use this at the campsite, even for small chores. This is a solid, heavy knife, for general household use. Has a great feel. Fooled me into thinking it could perform.

A great knife.
Although,my first time ordering this knife, the knife blade broke when I was processing wood, the exchange process was really fast and easy. And so far, I really like this knife. It batons wood really easily, and creates really good feather sticks. Can't go wrong with this knife for the price.

Stout build, not the best edge but good 'nuff
The difference between the SCHF36 and 36M is the laminated micarta (M) handle. That might be obvious to some or a mystery to folks like myself new to what have come to be known as 'bushcraft/survival' knives. I have both the 36 and 36M: one of them in the Toyota, the other in my truck. I don't know if the micarta handle justifies the price difference between the 36 and 36M. The fire starter and sharpening steel are convenient additions to the purchase but I don't know as they'd be a deal breaker either. This is the third knife I've purchased that comes with its own buzzwords, i.e. bushcraft & survival. The other is a Kershaw Camp 10. The next will likely be a Morakniv Companion. . .and for the price of those I'll likely buy three. Most bushknives are monsters. I've looked at many of the YouTube video reviews. The sky's the limit to obsessiveness. But, price points usually drive the bus. This Schrade 36 like its brother the 36M is a heavy piece of steel. The blade looks like a combination of "hollow ground" and "sabre ground". The cutting edges on mine were not evenly ground. Good edges are "V" shaped, symmetrical and invisible: out of the box the edge on both the 36 & 36m were both visible and asymmetrical. So, Schrade's price point precludes too much attention to detail. That said, the knife arrives sharp enough with a decent sheath, fire starter and sharpening stone. If you want it sharper or re-ground, go for it. But then, you'd be into Ka-Bar or Kershaw territory. Barring obsessive behavior, most of us would be happy with this knife out of the box.You 'could' potentially shave with it given a bit of work on the edge. But, I didn't buy a full quarter-inch tang, with handle-jimping and a choil to shave with: this blade is 1 1/2" wide, 1/4" thick and 4 1/4" in front of the finger choil!! No swage: the tang is 1/4" all the way to within 3/4" of the tip where it begins to bevel. There's no real pommel on the handle's end. However, the spine is most of 1/4" thick so my thought is, if you can baton with it you'll be able to pound a bit with it as well. This is a very heavy, stoutly-built knife designed for a lot of abuse that will serve for years. If I could only have one knife at this price point it'd be this one or one very similar to it. This one will spend most of its life in my truck for emergency use, i.e. breaking windows, baton work, removing back straps & tenderloins from the occasional gubbermint goat, etc.

Heavy duty knife for a heavy duty job. Works ...
Heavy duty knife for a heavy duty job. Works well. Appears to be high quality. Not trusting the sheath. It attaches to your belt with velcro. I want something more robust to carry a knife on my belt.Update: I did address the sheath issue with a needle and some thread. Knife stays sharp. I baton with it and then whittle. The sharpener that comes with the knife is a pleasant surprise. I even used it to sharpen my camping axe and my kitchen knives in my RV. Bumping it up to five stars. The finish is coming off from heavy batoning.

Piccolo e tosto

Great bushcrafting knife for someone on a budget
This is a great budget knife. For the price, I can't imagine a better product. The blade thickness is huge, just about a 32nd shy of a 1/4 inch and feels great in the hand.Pros:1. Very heavy duty. I haven't used this knife for very long, but I've done a fair amount of chopping and batoning with it and it has held up perfectly well. My previous knife was very poor quality, and ended up breaking in half on me with some light work. You could hack away with this thing all day and it won't break on you. At least not from my experience.2. The handle has good grip and is safe. This may not be the world's most comfortable handle, but its not uncomfortable. There's really no risk of this slipping out of your hand, or cutting yourself on the blade. I especially like the finger notch just below the cutting edge. Great for getting in nice and close to do detailed work. Gives you great control.3. Full Tang. The full tang on this knife is great. It extends past the butt of the handle giving you something to pound on without causing any damage.4. 90 degree spine. The spine on this is great for striking a ferro rod. It'll also scrape off fine shavings and wood fibres for tinder with the 90 degree spine.Cons:1. Comes with lots of gimmicky junk. The sharpening stone that comes with this knife is warped and of very low quality. I would not use this to sharpen my knife ever. The ferro rod is fine, but I have others that work much better. The striker is pretty useless that comes with the ferro rod as well.2. The sheath is oversized and pretty ugly. It has room for the ferro rod and the sharpening stone in an effort to make it a sort of survival kit. But the extras are kind of useless and it just makes the sheath all bulky and bulgy and just doesn't look very good in my opinion.3. Coated blade. I don't have any problem with coated blades, but this one is a little gritty for my taste. It doesn't cause much of a problem, but any sort of usage will scuff it up and make the blade look more worn than it actually is. The knife is great, but it'll look a little war weary very quickly with this coating. On the bright side, you don't have to worry about rust.4. Really thick blade. This is one of the things I liked about the blade, but it does make the finer detailed work a little challenging. I found it a little tricky to do any feathering with this blade. Not impossible, just a little more challenging than with a thinner blade. You have to cut at a steeper angle due to the thickness, and its more difficult to get the finer shavings that you would with a thinner blade.Overall:I love this knife for what it is. It's not the best knife in the world, but its a great knife and does exactly what I want it to do. I want something that I can really pound on in the woods, and this fits the bill perfectly. It sharpens up nicely, and holds an edge relatively well and for the price, you can't beat it. The sheath and extras are a little silly, but I didn't buy the knife for those things, so it's not really a problem in the long run. I would recommend to someone who's looking for a sturdy knife for the woods with a modest budget.

unbeleivable for the price!
6 stars!! At around 35$ I think I paid. This knife is indestructable and very useful! Thick enough to chop hard (for its size) and splits well. Very similar to the newer 52, just a smaller handle and the coating is kinda rough. Came sharp enough to shave arm hair and has retained a good edge after heavy use. After batoning about 20 pieces of cedar, the rough coating smoothed out a bit decreasing resistance. Finger choil works well for close work, sheath is decent but not my favorite. Good farro rod included. I'm sorry Essee, Ontario, Cold Steel, Becker etc.. Shrade is offering quality products for amazing prices.

Impressive knife, could be better though
Overall not a bad knife, but there are a few things that could be better.PROS:1) Solid full tang construction, and with a 1/4" thick blade this thing will be practically indestructible.2) Comfortable handle with great grip that does not feel small even in larger hands3) Sheath appears to be of decent quality, and the ferry rod and striker are a nice bonusCONS:1) Did not come very sharp out of the box which was a bit disappointing. It could not even cleanly cut though a piece of paper.2) The black finish appears to be a powder coat finish with a bit of a gritty texture to is which is very strange as you would expect a knife blade to be smooth for easy cutting. I was expecting this to be a DLC coating which it is not.3) It is a good thing they include a ferry rod striker because the spine on this knife cannot strike a spark without grinding off the textured finish.

Great value for what you pay
If you like camping, hiking or developing survival skills, you know that the value of a good blade in the field is worth its weight in gold. Not only is this knife rugged, robust and strong, it's full tang construction is usually found in knives worth 3x as much.Edge retention is average, so do have something handy to put the bite back on the edge for longer trips. The coating marks easily. But we don't buy a knife to oooo and ahhhh at it. We buy it to use it, and we look for dependability. This rugged knife is well worth the value, it's a great addition to your pack, survival bag or bushcraft kit. Big enough to baton wood, small enough to make feather sticks. Aside from saying you own brand X or Y, I can't understand why one would pay double or triple this.Bottom line? It's exceptional value for the money.

The one Knife Solution For Survival and Minimalist Trekking
Had this Knife long enough to put it through a camping and hunting season....this knife's primary utility is for wood processing for a fire and for heavy bushcraft chores (cutting poles for shelter/furnature, stripping bark, making stakes etc) Stays relatively sharp under heavy use, edge comes up with a few strokes of the stone.....Fire-steel and stone in the case is handy...sheath will last if you take care of it....a custom leather would be better for belt-ware, but I secure mine to the MOLE straps in my pack so the stock sheath works for me.....overall I've had sharper knives, but not many....and none of them would take the punishment this knife does in wood processing (chopping/batoning)....great value for the price....there are more expensive bush knives but I doubt they are functionally better than this Schrade

Grazie amazon consegna puntuale e perfetta come sempre.

GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY. :)
This knife has good value for the price. However it has some some pretty critical weak points. Ive used mine quite a lot for the past several months. I had been only cutting green branches and the like. However one day I was gathering some sticks for a fire and tried to chop off some dried spruce and fur branches. The blade shattered as you can see in the pic. I tried it again while waiting for a responds from customer service and it shattered 2 more times on a different branch. Didn't take a pic. Sorry. They all broke inward around 1/4"Possible causes in my mind. - hollow grind - heat treating - or bothGround it all down and now I'm still using it. I have tried it on the same branches and no shattering.Just be aware if you are in a bad situation it may shatter if hit on a dried branch. My advice is just snap the branches off by hitting it on the thick spine of the knife.

Spettacolare....
