The Diary Of Anne Frank (1959)

Anne Frank: the Hollywood edition, File under "fiction"
I read Anne Franks diary prior to a trip to Europe and a tour of her secret annex last fall. It was a remarkable story that I hope all have, or will, read to meet the friend you wish you could have known. I was driven to read more, to include her fictional short stories and "Holocaust Memoirs" by childhood classmate (and written about in her diary under the name Lies Goosens when the diary was published) Nanette Blitz Konig, a Holocaust survivor who met Anne again in the camp shortly before Anne died. I read much about the play and this movie, so I looked forward to seeing it. This is a story written not by Anne Frank, but by a rose colored glasses wearing Hollywood B grade script writer. It is based in the loosest terms possible on her diary. I was not long into the viewing when alarm bells started in my head. I found it quite disappointing that the writers/producers ventured so far from reality to compose this highly fictional travesty. I would instead suggest you read the U.S. edition of "Anne Frank, The Diary Of A Young Girl" available from Amazon. The maroon colored paperback and the small hard cover with the four B&W photos of Anne on the cover are excellent. This edition concludes with a short history after her death and of her legacy. I strongly encourage you to read the book first, or quickly reread or skim it again, to come to know or remember Anne. If you can then close the cover on the last page with no goose bumps on your arms, or, more likely, tears on your cheeks, then you have no soul.Ship the movie, but don't miss the book.

A reminder
To see this movie again now, after so long ago, I am stricken with the thought that, perhaps, it would be a great idea to show these movies again, especially to our youth. As with any generation, stories of their parents, grandparents, great grandparents, become more of a fantasy story instead of actual happenings. Once again, we seem to be straying from the path of morality and human decency to one another. If we would all delve into history. Actually teach what we have been through as nations and peoples and stop hating each other over the past, that we may learn to love or at least accept others as as valuable of human beings as we have value in ourselves. To not have only read the book, but see it on film, especially so soon after the war, gives it such an authenticity. IMHO - a must watch for everyone.

Happy!!!
Read the book in middle school and grow up watching the movie. Me and my 9 year seen the other version on Netflix a little while ago. But I didn't like it as much as this one. So I ordered this one for her to watch. And to my surprise my 12 year old, whom I thought wouldn't get into, got so engrossed with the movie that we couldn't even pulse it to go use the restroom.I will say that we had the same issue as some of the other viewers. The very beginning of the movie is black with music. I fast-forward and it started and didn't miss much.

Emotional telling of a beautiful story of attempted survial in hiding from the Nazis, in a young girl's diary.
The classic story of the Jewish Family, and especially the daughter, Anne's, attempts to survive the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam Holland without being sent to a concentration camp for several years. Anne documents each day of their struggle to live with additional Jews and another Jewish family, their trials and tribulations in living together in a very small loft apartment in a spice factory on a canal in the city. Very touching in it's handling of youth awakening to emotions and maturing between Anne and Peter. The conflicting emotions between the adults and their reactions and experiences when food become scarce. The heartbreak and terror when they are finally discovered by the Nazis. The very best of all the remakes of this story.

Important film about a young girl who will live forever
This is an exceptional Blu-ray. Picture and sound quality are wonderful, and there are enough extras to make any film fan happy. Making of the film, pieces about the stars (Millie Perkins and Diane Baker are interviewed, as is Shelly Winters in an older interview), and George Stevens, Jr. provides lots of insight into his father (Jr. worked on the film, too). There is also color footage of Stevens, Sr. during WWII and in the death camps. There is also a commentary track by Stevens, Jr., and Millie Perkins.Highly recommended!

This is still a great movie. It's very moving
This is still a great movie. It's very moving. My teen daughter studied WWII in school last year, but I wanted her to see it from the point of view of the Jewish community -- to see how devastating the oppression was. This was the perfect movie for that. The DVD was in very good condition.

EXTRAS MOVED ME TO TEARS!
The Fox Studio Classic DVD release of THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK was outstanding and featured both a commentary track and excellent extras. So is the Blu-ray worth the upgrade? YES! The transfer of the film is beautifully done and all of the extras from the DVD are still here, but the additonal NEW material is worth the price of upgrading all by themselves. The section featuring Millie Perkins and Diane Baker sharing how they came to be picked for the film and their experiences working with director George Stevens moved me to tears. The Stevens World War II footage that he shot in 16mm Kodachrome has much more material then we have ever seen before. Steven's Jr. experiences on the film are very interesting and the section in which he shares letters that his dad sent and received are touching. Alfred Newman's composer sons (David and Thomas)discuss their dad's work on his magnificent score for the film. If you are interested in classic films and/or Anne Frank then this Blu-ray edition will be treasured addition to your libray. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

GET IT QUICK WHILE IT'S THIS PRICE!
For just £7 this is an incredible steal.George Stevens' production is still my favourite and fortunately for Stevens' and the many fans of his work, he was over-ruled by the studio bosses to shoot the negatives in glorious Cinemascope instead of the standard format usually used for closely shot subjects. The Cinemascope format, as expected, has produced a prestine wide screen presentation. On my 50" plasma, the 3 hour film is beautifully displayed right across the screen with black bars top and bottom. Audio is crisp and well balanced providing 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio which does not spoil the feel of the film. This beautiful blu ray presentation, with lots of extra interesting and insightful features has made the story of Anne Frank even more accessible and enlightening to new and old fans alike.

A wonderful, timeless movie - buy the blu-ray for the extras.
I watched this on television many years ago and was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed it even more this time round. An exceptional cast, especially the wonderful Millie Perkins, and a beautiful musical score by Alfred Newman. The extras on the blu-ray are fascinating and as I write this I am listening to the commentary by George Stevens Jnr and Millie Perkins. A fastastic addition to my film library. A fitting tribute to a very brave girl.

Newer version is far better.
This original version fails to show what Ann Frank actually did. Still recommended though.
