Got it for my parents in another country. All they need it wifi and their whattsapp so simple! Love it when I call them they aren't always sitting and talking. So the camera moving to their faces is such a cool feature and convenient. You can also play music and watch things on it. Love how you can also read a book to them. OH you can also have many family members talk together too! I got all my parents and their children to talk together regardless of where they are at!

This portal is great for video calls, I use it everyday, it picks up on sound very easily though so if it's any extra noise in the background, your call may be affected because the mic on it is so sensitive but I love it

As far as tablet type devices go, you get what you pay for. Reasonable sound and screen quality and has enough features to act like your standard tablet.Dont expect a super sleek software and hardware design though and I can compare it to buying a cheap Samung phone vs a Samsung/Apple flagship device.It worked ok for me as I only needed it as a home device so my family can video call me as they aren't too tech savy with their smartphones. However if I hadn't spent 40mins setting this up, I can't imagine my parents could have done this on their own easily.You have the usual problems of being slightly glitchy and Alexa coming to life without you asking but all in all, decent for specific use.

I love the video calling. My daughter and other family members have a 2 year old Portal and she said my new one had a much sharper video. It is in a more slimline photo frame that can be set on the table vertically or horizontally that. The old one.There are lots of new features. Your facebook photos can be downloaded as can photos from your phone. You can make those private. I can touch the screen to move through my favourite photos. It comes loaded with some apps like Spotify, contacts, photos, a browser, Pandora, Storytime, And of course 2 facebook links. I added CBS news. The speaker in the back is great for videos and music. Its comparable to my ihome! The screen is the same size as my larger kindle fire and just as clear. It has easily accessible on screen instruction guide. I am recommending it to family and friends.

For all the elderly or just people who don't want to learn facebook, you just have to sign into a new account once and leave a message she can only be reached by messenger. No Facebook Hassel! It has been a godsend since Covid19. Especially because my moms on oxygen. This is a fantastic product it came just in time to be able to visit with my mother after a year during covid. This product USED to be way awesome. But no more. It used to have alexa built in. So you could use it to do all kinds of things related to alexa like ask questions, control alexa devices etc. I could call up my Ring camera devices too. You also used to be able to talk to it to start a video call by saying "hey portal, call joe schmoe".Well, Amazon STOPPED all of that compatibility effective 2/1/2025 and removed alexa and took away the ability to say "hey portal ..." to do anything. My elderly mom used to be able to say "hey portal, call xx" to call me if she could not get to the Portal, but no more. So functionality is WAY WAY down. I notice the amazon listing still shows "alexa built in" which is no longer true.Bottom line: no longer nearly as useful as it used to be; so I am looking for alternatives.If you ONLY want to use it for video chats and you want to have to walk up to it to push buttons on the screen to start those chats, then it is a great video chat device. But very disappointing that Amazon stopped all those other features!
