Big Block Quilts: Using Layer Cakes, Sweet 16s, etc!

An absolutely indispensable book for anyone who likes to design their own quilts. It includes basic quilting techniques and would be a perfect book for teaching quilting, but my favorite part is the many pages showing the different blocks you can make from identical elements - 238 blocks made entirely of combinations of half square triangles, rail fence, 4-patch, and/or plain square blocks, By far, my favorite quilting reference book.

I bought Big Block Quilts to use with layer cakes. I like the simplicity of the patterns and the method presented BUT I encountered a problem when I tried to use a layer cake. For good results the designs shown in the book depend on distinct contrast between light and dark fabric. None of my layer cakes have the required number of lights and darks so the pattern was not visible in my quilt. Also, sometimes it seems a shame to cut a particularly beautiful fabric into itty bitty squares and triangles. Big Block Quilts allows fabric to shine! Just be sure your fabric choices include enough contrast to achieve the pattern you choose.

I already knew about the book...several friends own it. I've been wanting it for awhile, and it is a good reference book.

Just started quilting and this book is very inspiring. Great pictures with very good instructions. Would definitely recommend.

This is a great, inspiring book, with so many ideas for using layer cakes. Previously I'd been stumped with what to use them for, but now I have a world of possibilities! The only downside is that maybe there are too many quilt layouts to choose from - or that could just be me!Simple, clear directions with pictures, black and white drawings of the quilt layouts plus some lovely colour photos of some (not all) of the quilts to give you an idea of the finished product. A really excellent book for the price.

This book gives me so many ideas of how to use layer cakes and other pre-cut fabrics - the variations of the different quilt blocks is endless - I am going to have fun with this book.
