Great training collar for the price
I researched a couple hours before choosing this Sportdog Yardtrainer "for Stubborn Dogs" collar. Don't let that "for Stubborn Dogs" mislead you. It's for ALL dogs. And it appears fairly well made. (My son-in-law paid over $200 for his Bulldog's collar from some other web site, left it's "waterproof" remote controller out in a rain, and now has to throw it away and buy another full kit!)BUT don't get this if your dog's neck is under 12 1/2 inches in girth! That is the size of our Sheltie's neck, and I can promise you this collar will not work if you trim-off too much unused collar, as the wires used in the remote control are embedded in the first 12 inches of the collar. Cut them and the collar is worthless! They don't warn you about this minimum length, so I thought I would. Go measure your dog's neck now (and write it down.)I trimmed off about A FOOT AND A HALF of excess collar, enough for a horse! I carefully inserted the batteries that came with the unit and tested it on my forearm. At setting #1 I barely felt it. At #2 I can feel a stronger tingle. At #3 I really noticed it, and at #4 I pulled it away! It goes to #8. We use it on #2 without trimming any of his long coat. We TRY and push the "noise" alert before pushing the correction button, to give our dog the chance to change his behavior before getting the shock. The neatest design on the remote is the button UNDER the "correction" button. By pushing this you effectively DOUBLE the shock from the collar. If our Sheltie gets excited and ignores the milder shock, I hit the second button, which at first caused him to yelp softly and ignore it no longer. Now he's used to it and swallows hard, but doesn't ignore it. If he ever does, I'll just move that strength dial up a notch- or two.Does it work? We got this mainly because our 27 pound Sheltie has what is called Seperation Anxiety Syndrome wherein he barks- sometimes frantically- when anyone of us leaves his environment, heads out the front door, heads for the car, etc. He freaks! (This is probably because of his strong herding instinct, his desire to keep what he considers his flock near at hand and safe.) We've had it exactly one month and I can say the collar has cut his barking in half. No, we're still not satisfied and will continue to train him with it. I researched and tried other behavior modifications with no luck. This is going to be tough, I can tell. But I don't want my dog on anti-anxiety drugs if I can help it. Our problem seems to be inconsistency with corrections. We simply don't have the remote with us every time we leave the house, despite the company including a nice long strap to wear the remote around our neck, if we choose.Yesterday I changed the two coin batteries in the collar for the first time. (I also researched on Amazon which 3V batteries to buy and chose those made by Sony in the 5 pack sold here. I got two packs.) Some folks report much shorted battery life. We got nearly a month of use, and we use the collar for 10-12 hours a day, maybe correcting our dog 5 to 10 times a day. Haven't changed the remote's batteries yet, as it still works fine. The "100 Yard Range" advertised on the package is likely an exaggeration. It does work up to 100 feet with no problem, other than having to open the door to hold the remote outside before pressing the button. Conclusion:If you have a half acre lot or less, have a dog with a neck 12 1/2 inches or more in size, and want a training collar well under $200, this is probably the one.

NOT A REPLACEMENT FOR ACTUAL TRAINING
THIS "TOOL" IS TO ENFORCE "POSITIVE" TRAINING YOU HAVE ALREADY COMPLETED, NOT TO BE USED IN STEAD OF ACTUAL TRAINING!!!! I CAN NOT EMPHASES THIS ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!This product is the only one I would trust as I've heard of issues pertaining to other brands; however more to the point this works and works well!As I have mentioned above, this will help you enforce the training you have already taught your stubborn pup. For example, if he (in my case I have a male dog and will refer to male dogs) knows how to: sit, stay, come, lay down, off, spot, kennel, drop it, heel and so on and simply doesn't do them on command then you may use this tool to provide the right amount of correction needed to stimulate your pup into doing what your ask.As for the right "amount" of correction, READ AND REREAD THE INSTRUCTIONS prior to using this e-collar. Start with the lowest setting and go up from there. He is not suppose to yelp when this is used, he is not to be harmed when using this tool!!!Again, read and reread the instructions to ensure proper usage and proper fitting. If your a new dog owner and or an inexperienced one. If you find you don't have the patients to train your dog or he's to aggressive or stubborn. If he has never been trained and your tired of him destroying your "things." This is not for you... I REPEAT THIS IS NOT FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Get Fido trained first. Now, for those of you that are skeptical or feel this may be in humane, simple stop.... stop beating yourself up about it and stop judging.First and foremost, I recommend that if your going to use this e-collar on your dog than you have to use it on yourself. Yes, use it on yourself. Why you ask, well I love the heck out of my dog and I wouldn't dare harm him in any way, shape or form. So if he's going to know what this may (eventually) feel like, than I need to know what it feels like. It's a good way to know that A.) it's safe B.) how it feels C.) whether or not you actually do want to use it. The marines, army, police etc go though similar training in regards to tear gas and tasers. They do this as to take a mental snap shot of how if feels and to not just pull the trigger without remorse. Why this is effective, why this is more humane than choke chains and prong collars.A chock chain does just that, chokes the dog as he attempts to pull and we all know what that feels like. I don't want to be chocked for various reasons including the fact that if I'm chocked hard enough I could damage my throat.A prong collar works as to enclose your pup's neck with prongs (best way to describe it would be nails without their points) and you "correct" your pup by sticking these prongs into your pups neck. Done correctly / fitted correctly can be an effective method of correction, but I'd rather not physically harm my dog... would you?The one issue I find with chock collars and prong collars is that in order for them to be effective, you need to have a leash in your hands and if for some reason your pup manages to escape your grasp, you would have no true recourse to stop your pup. You could argue that's what training is for and I would agree. I could shout a command, but there is always that chance he doesn't stop...I would rather give him a "correction" rather than see him run into the street and hit by a car. I have spent and do spend hours training my pup. I use opportunities through out our day to train him and he know's the commands very well; however once off leash, he know's I can't "get him."I have a Rhodesian Ridge back. These guys are know for their stubbornness and I for one realized the need for this e-collar.Best of luck to everyone out there, I hope you have the same luck with this tool as I have.

Remote Dog Trainer Collar
Works very well and I like it because I am in control. I am using it on my miniature poodle mostly for barking control and it seems to be doing the trick. The first 2 weeks I was using the remote to activate the collar several times a day and the batteries didn't last too long - only about 5 - 6 days. It takes 2 2032 button type batteries. Now that I am not activating the collar as much the batteries have lasted almost 2 weeks. Level 3 on the remote seems to be working well on my dog, and there is another button on the remote that triggers 2 levels higher than the one you have it set at if you need it. I find the collar on the dog is bulky - big for a small dog, but my dog doesn't seem to mind it at all and he likes to have it on. It seems to stay on the neck in the center where you want it to be. Other collars I have had kept moving to the side and you were forever moving it back to the center.I would recommend this collar. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was for the size of the collar and the batteries that didn't last long in the beginning.

it works - but dog is stubborn
works good but use wisely. Dog will learn what this collar does and you need to know what you're doing. Don't think it's a put on put off collar when needed. Dog will change its behavior depending on having the collar or not. My only advise is if you have no clue as to how you should train a dog, this type of trainer might actual worsen your dog behavior. Uses wisely and it's very effective.

Works like a charm
We have a mini Aussie who was running under the horses. It only took a shock or two to stop the behaviour. Now if she's getting to closed a voice command will remind her to get back. Te unit is also water proof so she can follow us accross the creek and i dont need to worry about any accidenctal shocks or unit damage. The only downside is that the unit is pretty bulky. She's only 17 lbs and this unit looks really big on her. I did like that it am ewith the 2 prong sizes as with her normal coats the longer ones are a must, however with a summer shave the shorts are more then enough. Over all pleased.

a very happy client...
This was really useful, i cannot be more satisfied , it did everything we hoped it would do with our perky French Spaniel and very easily. We were to go for 1 week in vacation, by a lake, in the woods and that young perky adorable dog has not been used to listen to "come" especially when not on a leash and it an environment as paradisiac as where we were going. I week training before we went and every time we went out we put the collar on ( we did put a bell on it just in case) but it worked like a charm. This dog is so smart that she had figured it out without 30 minutes and while there were many temptations to run ( ducks and birds and squirrels, you name it) when we called she came back running, ( it took a few buzz a few times but it worked everytime...) I do recommend it not as a punishing device but as a reinforcer of a command....a very happy client....

Great dog trainer
Great dog trainer. Use the beep option mostly, helps get her attention so she will listen. The beep seems to distract my dog enough so I can call her or tell her to stop something.
