Time is Money.
I'm a media professional. I work with a lot of RED footage, project files, and music. I need a reliable, fast, and portable drive to take with me on shoots to handle on site data transfers.Previously I had brought a 5400RPM Thunderbolt Drive with me on shoots and transferring 100 or so gigs of footage would take about 45 minutes to an hour. Sitting around and waiting for the footage to dump at the end of a long day is the last thing you want to do so I looked for other alternatives.I had a LaCie Rugged USB Thumbdrive that failed on me after about 2 months so I was hesitant to come back to the LaCie brand. But I said screw it, and went for it.And so far so good. It's survived a couple shoots and a few plane trips. It feels solid, and it's USB powered so it's truly portable. I haven't dropped it yet so I can't testify to it's durability in that regard. It's cut down data transfer speeds to "is this real life?" levels. 100 gigs takes 5-10 minutes. It's truly a time saver. And time is money, And money is good to buy yourself a ticket to disneyland where you can buy mad amounts of corn dogs to eat.

This means I can only really purchase one of these for my use and probably would have purchased more if they would have this sim
Upon receiving the product, I had to screw in one of the screws that was half-way in position under the orange enclosure. (photo shown after it was fixed) It was causing it to stick up and was very noticeable. Unsure about LaCie's quality control on the product, but seems to perform as described. There is only the one lightening port, so that it must be at the end of a chain of Lightning devices. This means I can only really purchase one of these for my use and probably would have purchased more if they would have this simple design / use of Lightning ports like all other similar devices. other than that, it has been a good product so far.

Great way to speed up your iMac without cracking the ...
Bought this to use as a boot/primary drive for a Late 2013 27" iMac. It has been serving that purpose quite well with several weeks of uninterrupted uptime. This is basically a Samsung SSD (their reseller line) in a durable case with a built-in Thunderbolt cable. Great way to speed up your iMac without cracking the case & voiding the warranty. I haven't done benchmarks, but anecdotally it performs every bit as well as any internal SSD. I zip-tied it on to the back of the iMac base so I can move the machine around without worrying about yanking or dragging the drive.I read somewhere that the orange rubber surround was not removable in this model. I was able to remove it, though it provides a nice grip against the machine it's tied to so left it on. The Thunderbolt cable is also orange and is not removable.Though this is clearly designed to be a portable/backup drive, it does a fine job as a primary. I found it to be a good value. An internal SSD, Western-Digital sled, and cable price out around $250. For an extra $50, you get convenience and protection for the drive.

Should I drop it off the roof?
I bought this product mainly for speed and durability, and so far, I am genuinely disappointed with this choice. Firstly, it did not work using the thunderbolt port, which is the fastest option for my macbook pro, although it did work using my usb port-which is much slower. I spent several hours between Lacie support, Apple support, etc. to establish that my thunderbolt works, and the problem was in fact in the Lacie hard drive. The replacement, which arrived quickly , has the same problem and more. The new one isn't SSD like the old one!!! So, now I have a hard drive that is even slower than the original, but thats not even the end of it!!The serial numbers are mostly rubbed off of this one, and at this point, I can't seem to be able to get through to any help on their website-which asks for a serial number before connecting you to a person!!!!!!!!!!! Their technical support was friendly, when I was able to contact them-but this product has been a real hassle

No good for USB3. No daisy chain for Thunderbolt. Too expensive. Better off DIY.
It seems to run ok in Thunderbolt mode which I guess is why it otherwise has good reviews. In USB3 it's a nightmare. I had to run in USB3 while I order a Thunderbolt hub, tried to partition it and it simply wouldn't function. Couldn't write a proper partition. Disk Utility couldn't repair it. Finally had to give up and run it without partitions. Bus-powered drives ALWAYS suck and this one is crazy expensive b/c it's SSD and Thunderbolt. For $300 dollars they should've provided a power supply. And the sad fact is, there are so few external SSD drives to choose from, much less from brands you've ever heard of that there aren't too many alternatives......yet. Just keep in mind, if you're buying it for thunderbolt, it's at the end of the line - no more devices after it. And if you're buying it for USB3 my advice is simply "don't". You'd be better off buying a reliable internal drive and mounting it yourself in a reliable chassis that has a power supply.

It pays to buy the best!
Outstanding performance - super fast and durable drive. I use it with Suer Duper and it works flawlessly, to create and update a bootable clone.

This device is awesome. I use it as the start-up (boot) drive for my 2013 Mac-Mini and it goes from dead off to logged in in 16 seconds. I have Microsoft Office on it and I can no longer out type it. This is a fantastic hard drive. Plugged in in (thunderbolt) and followed the very easy set up instructions (you can make it Mac exclusive, useable to both Windows and Mac) and how much to allocate to each OS. The description does not say that it will work with USB 3, but it has a USB 3 port and a cable.

Ottimo
