Black & Decker has several chargers and I had always assumed they were all the same. They aren't. The most common one is the hollow "clam shell" that goes over the battery with a power pack at the other end that is plugged into a wall receptacle.I always assumed these were the "slow" chargers or "overnight" chargers. They aren't. A slow charge for a "sub-C" ni-cad, which these packs are probably made with, is about 105 milliamps. Those more common packs are rated at 210 milliamps! They should be taken off after 8 hours.Of all my many B & D chargers (the common ones with the clamshell) I have one that is equipped with a charge indicator. It consists of 3 green LED's that light up (1,2,or all 3), while charging, when the display button is pushed. It is the ONLY ONE that charges at 105 MA! A full 16 hour charge!I also have the dual port (two at at time) charger ..... 210 MA .. 8 hours. The FSMVC is rated for a 90 minute charge time. I run my batteries down to minimum to avoid memory problems and needing to re-charge in the middle of a job. This often makes a recharge longer than 90 min. More like 2 or 2 1/2 hours. This is a pulse type charger so no need to worry about battery heating .... just watch ambient temps per instructions. If any of your batteries have 3 terminals they will "quick charge" in one hour. The third terminal is part of an overheat protection circuit. Most repair jobs can be done with 3 batteries. An all day building project will need most likely 4 to 6 batteries. If you are using the string trimmer and maybe the hedge shears and you have 2 batteries .... when the first battery runs down put it on this charger. Even if it is not finished charging when the second runs down there should be enough charge to finish the job.Hints and tips: If you don't need the charging battery right away leave it on! Even when the indicator light turns from flashing to solid it is still trickle charging. The light turns solid at about 85% of full charge. When the circular saw stops mid-cut the battery will still run the drill and probably even the recip saw. Both those tools are gear reduction and don't need as much current so they run quite a bit longer. This will probably also work from the sander to the drill or recip saw.Pluses: The FSMVC is the only charger that will provide a slow maintenance charge. It charges in 1/3 the time of the other chargers. It tells you when charge is complete.Minuses: It wasn't included with one of the tools. ;-)Remember: these batteries are a CONSUMABLE ... they don't last forever. If freshly charged and they don't last nearly as long as before, or the charge light indicates a bad battery ..... replace it!For advanced Mr. Fixits: Packs can be re-built. Not all the cells go bad at the same time. one pack can be cannibalized to fix another, or new cells can be purchased, or there are vendors that do this for you (much like taking a bad alternator from your car to the parts store and exchanging for a re-built one). I have been told this can be accomplished on site at Amazon ... good to check out!Hope this helps ......... MarkUp date: I took a pack in to a large battery retail chain for their rebuild. They put in 2200mah cells (larger than B&D's large)and warrantied for one year. Was it expensive? Yes ... but about the same as B&D with more power and warranty. Also You Tube has how-to videos on pack repair and even making a homebrew spot welder! ..... Good luck .... Mark

Excellent replacement for one or more OE chargers
Purchased this to replace a dead OE charger for my B&D "FireStorm" batteries.I have three batteries for my Firestorm system: the one that came with the set originally, one purchased about a year later, and third purchased one more year later. I thought that my original battery had pretty much had it and the basic diagnostics on this unit confirmed my belief with a fast flash code. Off to the recycler's with that one. The 2nd battery had been having issues charging on the OE charger before it died. However, it charged perfectly on this new unit. Very happy about that.Having the flexibility to recharge my 18v B&D batteries on this as well is a big plus. My OE charger for my 18v batteries still works fine, but now I can do with just one charger, rather than having to have two chargers out on the workbench.Item can quickly, NIB. Works just peachy. If you need a replacement for your OE B&D charger, or just want to not have to keep multiple chargers for your B&D gear laying about, this is a great way to go, and a heck of a lot cheaper on Amazon than the B&M stores I've shopped this item at (including the B&D outlet store).

Gotta have it
Made my tools more reliable because I was able to make sure I had a charged battery at hand at all times . The chargers that come with the tools are no good , I was about ready to get rid of the black and decker series because it was a fifty fifty shot on wether the battery would be charged or not . Then I read a review on Amazon that explained the fact that the chargers that come with the tools , those plastic tiny things, don't maintain a charge and will actually be detrimental to the batteries if left on them , thank goodness for reviews !So I bought this charger and ever since have had perfect service from my tools never again to worry about my batteries . this charger is a maintianence style charger it will tell you if the battery is any good and you can leave the battery on it for as long as you like and know it will be charged and ok . If you own this type of battery system you really need this charger . Black and Decker never should have sold those other chargers in the first place and at least gave more info on those cheap units ..

Needed to replace the lost charger.
My son had given the B&D Firestorm drill some years. somehow we misplaced the charger. We were not able to find the battery charger in the stores. It was a couple dollars higher on the company web site. I still think it is too expensive. We really thought long and hard should we just by a new drill that comes with a battery charger and a battery. Buying the charger and an extra battery cost just as much as buying a new drill. It works well.
