Good idea, needs better instructions and screen protector
As you read this review, please keep in mind that i like and am keeping the product. So, any criticisms are about improving the product.Once i had my Kindle installed, the first thing i noticed was that the reflection produced by the OtterBox was visibly greater than that of the Kindle alone. This is especially pronounced in bright light, which the Kindle itself handled fairly well. For the present i will keep it as is and at some point i will determine if i should remove the OtterBox screen and replace it with a screen protector that attaches directly to the Kindle screen. I've already done this with my iPhone OtterBox Defender and the result is very useable. Yes, i lose their warranty, but product usefulness is important to me, and, given that the OtterBox screen protector does not cover the camera hole anyway i don't think i will lose that much protection should i decide to remove the OtterBox screen and replace it with a directly connected screen protecter. I wish they had offered a non-reflective screen protector, but given that there is an air gap between the OtterBox screen and the Kindle screen it is not clear how much this would have helped. At the time i purchased the OtterBox there was no video and the only instructions came printed with the box. I found the installation instructions to be near useless, hence the 4 stars. Once i figured it out for myself, and tech support was unable to help because they had never seen the product, it was a straightforward process of removing the outer silicon skin with a non-sharp butter knife and using the knife on the 4, not 2 as in the directions, locking pins. The weight of the OtterBox, as with all OtterBox Defender series is a bit on the heavy side, but i'm glad of the protection and i guess i can use the exercise. So, now that i have been using it for a while, i am happy with the result, but it took some work to get it there.

Should be called, "The Fortress"!!!!!
I purchased a refurbed Kindle Fire HD 8.9" 64 GB 4G LTE device and needed to protect it from my 3 and 6 year old boys. I knew there was no way to keep it out of their hands so I decided the only way to protect my Kindle (which I absolutely love!!) was to build a fortress around it. Enter the Otterbox.I'm not new to Otterbox cases as I have purchased two in the past for smartphones and they have worked great. Needless to say, the Kindle Otterbox case is spectacular! So far, my boys have sneezed goopy snot on it, spilled chocolate milk on it, dropped it once and briefly played the Kindle while bouncing on a trampoline (that got shut down extraordinarily quickly) and these are only the incidents that I am aware of (no telling what my wife decided I didn't need to hear about). And through all the known and unknown, the Kindle is like brand new. And the Otterbox case doesn't have a scratch on it. Wipe it down here and there with one of those disinfecting wipes and its like it never happened. And installation is quick and easy just like Otterbox cases for smartphones. I have seen others complain about the installation instructions and yes, they are bad. But honestly, this thing is not hard to put on even if you've not been exposed to Otterbox products in the past. And if it is really tough for you, just look on Youtube for an install video. There are many out there. So, what's the downside you ask? (there's always a downside, right?) The only downside to this case is the weight (the cost is a factor for some but I don't consider that a downside). It is heavy. No other way to describe it. And for some, it may be too heavy to be worth the protection provided. This is what I tell people who ask me about this case. If you have no kids/wild pets/crazed in-laws/etc. and things move slowly and calmly at your house...then this case is too much for you (unless you just like the fortress look). You can get by with a smaller, cheaper and lighter case. But if you have kids or huge dogs or deranged in-laws or lunatic friends...get this case...its like Fort Knox for your Kindle!!

Not the best design from Otterbox, but does protect your Kindle
Before I review this, I have to say that I am a huge Otterbox fan and love, absolutely love their defender series for my iPhones. That being said there are definite pros and cons to this kindle cover. I have had mine for about 3 months now and have come to the following conclusions:PROS:- it's a otterbox defender cover! If you're like me and throw it into bags with other stuff all the time, or have younger kids handling it frequently, there will be no worries about your Kindle surviving. They could probably use this thing as a football and your kindle would work after the game..CONS:- weight - the weight of the case and cover is quite heavy. I travel a lot and the weight makes me want to go back to a smaller kindle for trips. I don't even bother with the cover when at home.- stand - the stand has 2 adjustments - too flat and too upright. There definitely needs to be another adjustment between the two for people who actually would like to use the stand to read. As is, it is pretty useless option.- built in screen - I'm usually a fan, but this one is not anti-glare/anti-reflective and makes reading hard on the eyes. Also, because it does not fit close enough to the screen of the kindle a whole lot of dust and cat fur has now made itself at home underneath the screen and probably all over inside the case. I can only imagine the scratches when I get the case off.- ability to get the case off and on the kindle - this is probably the one reason that I could see people returning the case before even trying it out. IT IS NOT EASY. It is also the reason I haven't removed all the dust and fur out of my kindle yet. I'm really considering going back to a leather case if I have to pull this thing apart again and that sucks considering the price.- price - it is expensive relative to other cases available, but I pay $50 for the one for my iphone, so $80 isn't all that unrealistic. For the price though, I'd rather have more PROS than CONS on this list.Other CONS that I have heard mention are the lack of color options and the rubber covers over the misc plugs (headphone, power, etc). The lack of colors is because this is a new product. If they sell enough, Otterbox will make more colors for this, but with the number of complaints or CONS on peoples' reviews - maybe not. The rubber covers are no different than those on their phone cases, so I'm assuming those people have just never used an Otterbox case before. They keep gunk from accumulating in your plugs - they are fantastic and I don't find them to be a bother at all, but maybe that's just me...So overall, I guess whether you like this product or not depends on why you need it and how you use your Kindle 8.9. If you're more worried about bumps and bruises - then this is your product. If on the other hand, if you worry about that, but also travel with it a lot, then it's really up to you how much the weight really bothers you. The weight bothers me, but balance that with the protection you get and I'm still on the fence because I'm pretty rough on my stuff. The only thing for me that is a really big CON is the fact that I'm getting all the dust and fur inside the case due to a design flaw (??) and to get this thing off to clean it out is going to be a major hassle. I'd like to give this case at least 4 stars because this product will/does protect your kindle, but it's such a pain to pull this case apart, (and the fact that I have to pull it apart due to the dust/fur that got inside) that I have to give it a 3.

like it
It makes the kindle very heavy. I guess when travelling it would be great but around the house I don't use it much.

Seems sturdy
Seems sturdy and durable I question if the cover would stay on if it took a serious fall but initial impact would probably be fine
