Sprouting Hulled Buckwheat
I use hulled buckwheat groats to make a raw cereal and have bought them for many years in local health food stores or specialty shops. Lately, the groats I bought have failed to spout even though they are labeled as raw. I questioned the store personal but all the answer I got was that I needed to used the unhulled and that hulled groats wouldn't sprout. I knew this to be untrue because I have sprouted for many years. I discovered Handy Pantry online and they advertised a sprouting hulled buckwheat so I ordered some and it really does sprout. It also is packed in a handy to use metal container. The only problem is they are expensive and the shipping is high because of the weight of the can. Next time I will order two cans to avoid shipping costs. I don;t know what they have done to buckwheat groats sold in stores but they are definitely not raw even if labeled raw. I would recommend Handy Pantry Sprouting Buckwheat Grouts if you intend to sprout them..

It works
The groats are supplied in a nitrogen filled "tin can" that is rated to last 5years. The poly lid works well after the can is opened. The quality of the groats is good. Only a few black groats have to be removed and that is because I make cereal with them instead of the recommended (traditional?) sprouts. Buy them, you will like them. The few blacks grouts are easy to remove.

Sad to say it was not useable
Sad to say it was not useable. Opened the can and it smelled of mold which seemed impossible since it was a can, but maybe moisture got in before sealing somehow. Inspected the groats and there was a gray fuzzy mold on the surface of the top layer. Once under that layer they did not smell of mold or look to have mold but I cannot consume them and risk it. Besides that they tasted terrible of mold so why would I want to. Wanted to love this product and took a chance buying such a large quantity all at once and now it's going to all go in the trash, what a waste. Bought buckwheat from a different seller that arrived at the same time and did not have mold and had a fresh nutty taste. Clearly the seller does not intend to have it be moldy but I guess I got an old one or a bad one. I won't be buying from this seller again because of this.

Good transaction
Good transaction. I had some difficulty sprouting the groats--they became moldy b/c I was waiting for bigger sprouts. Didn't know what to expect.

Contaminated Buckwheat Groats
There is something definitely wrong with these buckwheat groats . . . I have bought this product many times in the past and it was excellent . But this time as soon as I opened the can I could smell a strange smell , which I believe to be the smell of mold . Also , when I transferred the buckwheat groats into another container , a bunch of what I would describe as a grayish powder , came off the the groats , which I never remember happening before . I have contacted Amazon and addressed this problem , and we discussed my concerns about the potential health problems of this product , if indeed it was contaminated with mold .

Great for sprouting!
These groats have worked out very well for sprouting and I have been able to make wonderful buckwheat waffles from the flour created from the ground, sprouted groats. The lid seals well, so there should not be any problems regarding freshness. The quality of the groats is very good- I have not found any "off" groats. Whenever the time comes that I actually get through all five pounds, I would definitely purchase this product again!

Super tasty.
Super tasty. I sprout them part way and eat wet with a little salt. Though note that if they aren't sprouted long enough they're hard to digest. Beano helps with that. I also grind them dry with wheat 50:50 into delicious pancake flour.
