Excellent tool
Love this axe. Wanted a full tang hatchet, because I don't want to faff around with handle maintenance. I own other Estwing tools, so I know they're made to last a lifetime. This axe arrived in perfect condition and was usable-sharp straight out of the box. I've since given the blade a honing on my water stones and it's now like a razor blade. Used it a few times, I think it's light weight, holds its edge really well but most of all is very well balanced. You get great accuracy in the swing.

The best hatchet I've ever owned.
Used it already on a camping trip but this image was just me testing it to make some small sticks for the fire at home. Worked a treat and as a Ex-Scout leader I've had access and bought several hatchets for camping trips and I wish I'd bough one of these years ago. Noatks or scratch les on the axe and the sheath was fine on mine unlike a couple of the reviewers here and even though the sheath being damaged would have been a issue for me too, the hatchet is gonna get scratched anyway if your using it so I wasn't too bothered if it was but mine was fine anyway. Highly recommend.

Luck of the draw what you receive quality wise
Reading a number of reviews here it seems quite a few people have received poor quality axes. They're obviously churned out of the factory and I guess the QC could be better. Mine is actually fine so it's clearly luck of the draw what you receive. I've owned an Estwing hammer with the same leather wrapped handle for the past 35 years and it's still used regularly, so if this axe lasts anywhere near that time I'll be a very happy man. I'd agree with the comments regarding the sheath, it's not the best, but it does it's job in protecting the axe head when not in use.

I was just wondering if it needed a sharpen when...
...I chopped the end of my thumb off. It's a beautiful axe, solid, one piece design. It'll look great above the fireplace for future generations. And makes an excellent Christmas, Bday, Father's Day present. Comes with a sheath to protect you in transit, or when using as a hammer, and is effective for small jobs, kindling, stripping bark, etc. As I found out it also keeps its edge for a good while. The trick is not to use it when you are so tired even putting your shoes on seems complicated (babies, sleep deprivation in my case). You'll be happy to know that as long as you miss the bone the fleshy bit of a thumb will grow back. I can't vouch for other fleshy parts though, so don't use it naked!

Calidad Estwing

Excellent camping hatchet
This is a pretty decent camping hatchet. I'm not going camping anytime soon, but I am splitting firewood, and took the opportunity to give this hatchet a test. It did great splitting smaller diameter logs and branches <3" and tolerated me batoning it for logs in the 4" and 5" range. I wouldn't bother with anything bigger while camping. I didn't chop down any trees, or de-limb them with it, but it's sharp enough that it should do the trick for those tasks. Light enough that I don't really notice it after I zip tied the sheath to my camping ruck. Overall, good quality for the price. Sheath could be better, but it's not like I bought it for that, and it is MOLLE II compatible - if you use a few zip ties.

Unbreakable, inexpensive, American-made tool-for-life that easily punches above it's weight
I've had this for half a year and I feel ready to give an honest review after having used it on a handful of backpacking and canoe trips. I wasn't smitten with the look of this hatchet as I like the more classic look of wooden handled ones but the overwhelming number of positive reviews (and the price) lead me to finally decide on purchasing it. When I got it in the mail I still wasn't that impressed. Firstly, the edge was obviously ground too far to one side. I'm certainly no expert and reshaping an axe edge but I spent about two hours with a file and at least ended up with something that looked symmetrical. Nextly, I went on to sanding off the varnish, as another reviewer had suggested, and oiling all the leather. I used coconut oil. Time will tell if the coconut oil was a good idea. I really do think getting off the varnish is a necessity because that leather is bone dry. As the reviewer had noted, once that varnish cracks it seems likely that leather will soak up water and slowly end up rotting. However, I don't count either the reshaping or the sanding as a con. It is the lack of nice finishes that allow it to be sold so cheaply and it is enjoyable to invest a bit of time into your tools. Before really using it much I contemplated selling it. Many suggest that the Husqvarna hatchet is a good inexpensive beginner hatchet and I contemplated getting that one instead. However, I ended up falling in love with it on the third use. I split sectioned piece of stump that I don't think I really should have been able to with a hatchet this small. The narrow cheeks, which some have noted as a bad design, meant that, when I struck the log the axe buried really deeply and wedged itself in there. Since it was wedged so tightly I flipped it over and pounded (really really pounded) another stump with the poll of the hatchet. It split perfectly. My understanding is that with conventional wood handled axes this is a bad idea because it will eventually spread the eye and loosen the handle. Not a problem with this one. Pound as much as you like. In another instance my dad batoned a tough piece of wood with this hatchet by pounding the poll with a claw hammer. Again, I believe this a big no no for a wood handled axe - at least one you cared enough to keep for any length of time. So in the end, yes, i love it. The pure unbreakable robustness won me over. Like many others have noted, this is a tool that will likely serve me well for life. Made in the U.S. The 50-ish dollars I paid for is a steal in my opinion. I would caution any beginners to do some axe safety research before going out and taking it for a spin though. There are certainly safer ways to use a short handled axe like this one.
