Hi. Usually it means that the tree isn't getting enough water. I've stuck my finger in the pot as much as I can to see if it's truly dry at the roots. If it's really dry, it may need a good soak, but just for a day or so. Google Search has helpful answers beyond what I can suggest. Best wishes.

Can this be placed outdoors in southern California climate?

yes, if it is inland.i have 4 ficus trees in my yard in the san fernando valley. they are all healthy. 2 have growen higher than my roof.
