Did what I expected it to do.
I hadn't heard much about this toner, so I decided to take a chance with it seeing as how I had recently cut all my hair off for a disconnected pixie I had been longing for, which was the perfect time to rebleach to the lightest shade I could go and give it a whirl. Once I got a pale yellow (almost white with light yellow hues), I let my hair air dry completely after using some clarifying shampoo. I didn't bother with a tint brush while applyting this toner due to its jelly consistency, so I sectioned off my hair into quadrants and ran it through my strands among each section. I took a very fine-toothed comb through my hair to even it all out. I used only half of the pot due to my hair being real short, but I applied enough to fully saturate each strand. Left it on for 1hr and 30mins, then rinsed to find my hair pratically white with silver hues. Almost all of the light yellow tones was gone, and the tips of my hair were even a very pale lilac shade (which washed out after a couple washes a week later). It lasts about a week for me, sometimes two depending on if I wash my hair often (which I don't normally need to really do). Needless to say, I was very pleased with this product as a toner. Sure, it doesn't do maximum toning like the Wella T18 would, but it does work well enough to use every week without any damage done to my bleached hair (which I want to avoid) -- you can't use the T18 unless you add in a developer, which is damaging if used a lot to constantly tone. I've already bought a few more pots to stock up on, and will likely buy several more to keep as back-ups. I definitely like it much more than the Manic Panic Virgin Snow, but I would say the SFX mixer/toner works just a smidge better than this one (and lasts a bit longer). I'd still recommend it. PROS: - isn't tested on animals - doesn't damage hair no matter how long you leave it on, even after bleaching - has a nice jelly feel that is easy to apply - conditions the hair and leaves it soft after rinsing - easy to follow, clear directions - can be applied by hands without a tint brush if you want - has a nice light smell that isn't overwhelming - does not irritate the scalp - no extra products or ingredients needed - works well on very light hair to tone out any yellowness - comes in a thick jar/pot that is hard to break or damage CONS: - 88ml of product in a small jar/pot, so those with long and thick hair will most likely need another to get an all-over application - products needs to be scooped out - no mention of the specific shade or type of product on the jar aside from the small manual attached to the lid (most will remove it, so it's best to write the shade on the lid if you're like me and get confused with numerous dyes) - does not last as long as other brands, even if I don't wash often ---------- PLEASE NOTE BEFORE BUYING: Due to the color of this product in person being a lilac shade, your hair needs to be close to the same color as the inside of a banana peel (very pale yellow that is level 10 hair, or at the least a pale level 9) for this to have a really noticeable effect that will give you the results that it advertises itself as: white. It works best on platinum hair that has real light yellow hues for maximum effect. If your hair is blonde but it has obvious golden yellow or bright orange/brassy hues, it's not going to cancel it all out and give you white. Even if you get a deeper colored purple toner (or you make your own), it won't give you white. Color can't lift color, only cancel it out (so you would get maybe a sandy, beige colored blonde, just not as brassy). If you want white with this specific Directions White Toner, bleaching again to the lightest shade will be necessary. -----------

Wonderful white toner
Finally found a white toner that actually works. The application is a bit 'messy' but easier to use than a tube. You can apply with a tint brush or you can just dip your fingers in like I do - slather on the roots and keep slathering. Very thick, which holds onto your hair nicely. The little pot goes a long way. This is finally something that works on my mom's hair - she can never get toner to remove the gold tones (yellow band from overgrowth). We now mix this with La Riche Silver toner as well, so she gets to look like Ursula for a bit with blueish-purple hair. Due to the porousness of her hair the blue/purple stays for a day or two until it is washed out.

Love it! Cheap and effective!
I have never done any sort of toner by myself but this was incredibly easy to apply and showed immediate results. My hair is highlighted professionally with bleach so it's pretty light, but I wanted to cut the yellow/gold tones. Just applied to towel dried hair and brushed through, covering my entire head (including the brown pieces) and left on for 45 min. Immediately more platinum. May take a couple of applications to achieve white white blonde, but the product is fantastic. Bought two more jars!

Patchy Results, But Not a Deal-Breaker...Maybe.
This toner leaves me with mixed feelings, as you can probably tell by the title of this review. I bought this in the hopes to replace my typical go-to toner, which was Manic Panic's Virgin Snow. Manic Panic just seemed pretty expensive for the cheap quality, and the smell was horrendous. It also left my hair slightly dingy over time. By comparison, Directions White Toner is definitely superior in terms of quality. It's a lot creamier, and easier to incorporate in the hair. And the smell is a lot more subtle. It's almost pleasant I'd say after rinsing. It's clearly evident to me that the quality in general is simply "better." In terms of strength, this definitely takes to the hair a LOT better than the Manic Panic brand. It's much stronger, which was unexpected for me, and I left this on for slightly longer than what the directions said. (More that 15...but still less than 20) Despite being a stronger toner, this is by far the patchiest toner I have ever used. It's the first time a toner has actually turned my hair lavender. (I've never had that problem before) But despite some parts going purple, some parts of my hair were still slightly yellow, which I thought was strange. Granted my hair is very fine and thin, it may simply be the texture of my hair, and next time I may try this at only 10 minutes. So, I'm not totally devastated. It's just a semi-permanent color after all and I'm sure this will fade after a few washes. But I am disappointed that this toner gave such uneven results. I almost feel like this toner doesn't have enough blue tones in it for my hair. It's just slightly too warm. Having said all that, would I recommend this product? Yes, but with caution. It's about personal preference, and knowing this will fade quickly, the lavender doesn't bother me TOO much, especially since that's a problem caused from leaving it on to long, and simple based on my hair type. Overall, I consider it a plus that it's a toner that can actually stick to the hair. Something I think is not always easy to get with a white toner. So if you do decide to try this, I HIGHLY recommend checking this in 5 minute intervals, or doing a strand test first. I can't say I'd buy it again based on this first use. The next time I try it, I will leave it on for only 10 minutes.

Make sure your hair is light enough before using this!
I bleached my (short) hair once from medium brown, yielding the super brassy, orange-y result (I have a lot of red in my hair naturally, which is what always makes this a problem). I used half the container of the toner to see what it would do to that level, and there wasn't much of a change. I then bleached it again a week later, yielding a really light gold color. I used the second half of this toner on my hair the next morning, and it definitely evened out and was less shiny-gold. It's now almost like a white-gold color, and I really like it! My goal was platinum, but I'm going to wait longer to see if I want to put my hair through a third bleaching cycle (it feels strong and healthy after two, still, but I also take really good care of it, aside). I now rely on AG sterling shampoo, and lightly toned conditioner. I'll likely order this again, if I do end up bleaching a third time, as I will want half for toning and half for mixing in with a plain conditioner.

Did what was expected (White toner)
I’ve been trying to lighten my hair for a while now, so I had a pretty good start but I used the white toner to make the color even, and it did turn out a little gray, but overall the color is really good. I left the white toner in for 30 minutes (15 is recommended.) One jar got all of the ends of my hair (which is very long,) but I would need 2 jars to do my whole head.

not pigmented enough to be effective
well, I wont buy this again. It didn't have quite as much purple pigment as I would have hoped. (Manic panic's "virgin snow" has the same short coming.) purple is what counteracts the orange tones. So this didn't really make much of a difference at all. I should have ordered the "silver" one instead of the white, Im sure that would have worked better. Or perhaps mixed both this white toner and the silver toner. but this white toner on it's own did not get my hair white despite my hair being a light bleach blonde color to start with. It also didn't smell good, and it came in such a tiny little jar, AND it was more expensive than other toners Ive tried (17 dollars if you include the shipping) So I think the next route I will try is just getting some manic panic ultraviolet purple, and mixing that up with some cheap white conditioner to make my own toner. Much cheaper and more effective than this. I suppose if you had light blond hair, and you simply wanted to make it slightly less brassy looking but not quite white, this might be the toner for you. But I actually want white hair, or even silver, so this just did not cut it for me.

Finally. White blonde hair after 31 years!!
This stuff is awesome. I've bleached my naturally blonde hair for the last 31 years trying (& always failing!) to achieve a white blonde. I've purchased every blue/violet shampoo available & although they do work well in reducing/eliminating the yellow brassy tones, I've never managed to achieve platinum perfection. I bought this after being impressed with the results my daughter had with the turqoise one, but when it came & I opened it I was incredibly disappointed. It's a pale violet colour, no discernable scent & a wierd (not unpleasant) slimy texture. I held out no hope of it doing anything at all to be honest. Anyway, bleached roots, then shampoo'd hair & as per instructions applied this for 15 minutes. Rinsed hair, conditioned it, then left it to air dry naturally. I'm honestly in total shock, I now have stunning, white blonde/platinum hair!! I'm truly amazed at how brilliant it is, if you saw it in the tub you just wouldn't believe it could do anything at all, let alone create the results it has. I've still got half the tub left too (even though I have waist length hair!) so I'll get 2 goes out of it. A little seems to go a long way. I think in future I'll condition my hair before I use it though, as because my hair is like straw before conditioning it was really hard to spread it evenly throughout my hair (it felt saturated) but I didn't do a completely even job as I've got a couple of patches where I clearly didn't put enough and/or put too much. My own fault though, so not complaining, just hopefully giving a helpful tip. I didn't condition as I thought it might affect the efficacy of the product, but having used it now & seeing how good it is, I think I could/should have conditioned to ensure even coverage. Cannot recommend this enough.
