2009 album from the Alt-Rock/Punk legend. Iggy Pop takes on the language of romance and puts a decidedly French twist on Prliminaires. Produced by longtime collaborator Hal Cragin, Prliminaires highlights another facet of the Iggy Pop persona, focusing more on Jazz arrangements and the distinctive, rich baritone heard on classics like 'Nightclubbing' and his duet with French legend Franoise Hardy on the song 'I'll Be Seeing You'. The album themes and texts have been inspired by Iggy's reading of controversial French novelist Michel Houellebecq and his book The Possibility Of An Island. On the record, Iggy even sings one song in French, a cover of Jazz standard 'Les Feuilles Mortes (Autumn Leaves)', a song widely associated with French legends Yves Montand and Edith Piaf. There are also more raucous moments like the Swamp Rock stylings of 'Nice To Be Dead'.

Plain excellent
When you stop and think about it, Iggy and his various crews probably invented three quarters of the music formats we now listen to. I met the man, briefly, once, and we spoke of history. He is that amazing Zen character who can put into simple words the most complex thoughts.I cannot praise this CD too highly. The lyrics are witty, incisive, and utterly without pretense. The music is exceptionally well written and recorded. (Iggy's blues guitar playing is exemplary.) His singing on this is reminiscent of Blah Blah Blah, which I thought was the most under-rated CD ever. I've read comparisons with Sinatra, and I think that's more about interpretation than technique. Both possessed/possess a great baritone. Yes, Iggy does indeed have technique. The world-weary gravity of his voice propels a variety of genres here, though they all do fall within the realm of caberet jazz and the blues, which are more closely related than one might think. When you think of Iggy, you don't normally think "pretty," but these are often pretty compositions, albeit in dark tones rather than our usual commercial pastels.I've given this CD to my punk rock friends, and they all love it, even though it is totally out of their genre. Ultimately, it's about the sincerity and quality of the work. If you like music in any manner, this is a CD for you. As with all great art, it transcends.Oh yeah. There are dogs involved. So go buy Procol Harum's The Well's On Fire for another great dog song.I don't know. I just love songs with dogs involved. Ar ooooo! Every dog must have its day.Iggy has his here. Good work, dog.

Curious blend of Berlin,New Orleans and Vegas
Iggy Pop's version of Autumn Leaves sung in French is the best ever of anybody. Just on that alone makes this cd worth having. The Doggie songs are cute but in a futuristic sci-fi way. I've never heard of a puppy delivered by fed-ex to order, but who knows what goes on in the Iggster's mind-scape. It's never boring. I love his big boy voice, similar to what he did on that Ryuichi Sakamoto Neo Geo album from the 80's. The song was called 'Risky". His vocals are a cross between Basso Profundo and Baritone Amplificado. I make up words sometimes, my friend just recently convinced me that there was no such word as nymphodisiac. Oh,well. Preliminaires,French for foreplay. Write me,Iggy,JD@136 Bellaire Ave KCMO 64123. It's time for a Songbook of alternative entertainment hits. You're the one who could do it justice. Caberet,Jeepers Creepers,Hello Dolly,La Vie En Rose,When the Saints Go Marching In,Mack the Knife...etc. You'd be the new King of New Years. Forgive my ramblings. Luv on ya! jd

Gets Better with Every Album
This record sounds nothing like anything Iggy has ever done before, yet it is amazing. I bought it because I have never heard an Iggy record that I haven't liked, and this simply blew me away. The record really shows how dynamic Iggy can be, breaking away from his classic and trailblazing punk sound. This record has a lot of a smooth jazz sound to it, with Iggy softly and poetically singing about different subjects. Yes, the hardcore, "I want to hear classic Iggy again, and again, on every record, while he's stabbing himself with a broken beer bottle" fans will probably strongly reject this album. However, to those people who can actually appreciate other forms of music, and a musician's ability to transcend into different genres or music (and do it well), this album will be hailed as some of Iggy's greatest work. A definite buy.

It's a dogs Life/iggy pop
I've followed Iggy's (JO) career for most of my adult life and I am happy that he has made this album.I absolutely love this. An existential album about sex, love, death and dogs sung in Iggy's great style is just right. Most of the album is sung in Iggy's baritone crooning style except "It's Nice to be Dead". That is the one song that rocks and it is a killer.Great sound and production!

Great sign of a real artist
Most rock singers seem to be uni-dimensional. Not Iggy. To my delight, he can croon and do a ballad and sing slow and sweet while still doing intelligent rock and jazz. If you want piano bar music, not here. If you want good jazz, good ballads, and challenging lyrics and music in a different setting, well this is great deal of fun. Take the challenge! It is not the best album of the year, but it may be the most entertaining!

not your typical "Iggy"
Iggy is... Iggy. This is not where you would expect him to go. It has a laid back, bluesy feel. Swampish. Cajun, almost. Jazzy. Yes, it's Iggy. It's pretty awesome. If you're looking for metal.... you're not going to find it here. Iggy has always been more diverse than people give him credit for. Give it a few spins. It will grow on you, even if you're a fan of the punk and metal stuff. Iggy always has his moments, and his wonderful little twisted lyrics. I recommend it... but it's probably not what you would expect!

Something different from the Ig
Iggy has always been my man and he does not disappoint. Do not expect any loud rock and roll on this one though. It is Iggy doing some songs for a French film with one song sung in French! Its got accordions, horns, and other instruments not normally associated with his music. The sound is almost melancholy, reflective and refreshing at the same time. The booklet of drawings by Marjane Satrapi that comes with this deluxe box set fits the mood of the music. Apparently only 6,000 copies were made for world wide distribution so get yours now!

Pop have never been better
Iggy Pop new CD is possible his best. Like Leaonard Cohen, Tom Waits et al these old buggers just keep getting better. The French quarter sound and the use of the New Orleans Funeral Band add to the mood and highlight of Pop's now very gruff voice. Check out the King of the Dogs interactive video on You Tube while your at it.

IGGY THE CHANTEUR
It was a brave move for Iggy to step out of the shadow of his past and try something so completely different. The opening track has the feel of something Serge Gainsbourg could have written and this sets the scene for an album that has the atmosphere and mood of a small French music hall cabaret production.the album is sung in both French and English and his style is laid back and easy going. Surprisingly, his voice suits this sort of music and as an experiment, the project works well. The album comes in under 40 minutes in length.

Perfect
Iggy's voice is perfect for French, very seductive, this is a great album and different to his usual styles, having said that, he doesn't really have any one style as I am learning, there's more than one Iggy for each decade. Listen to his BBC radio 6 program to learn more!

Paris late at night
Love this. Very different to his earlier stuff , but if you imagine Paris basement bat late at night and that appeals, so will this.
