All my dreams come true
When I played the original in 1997 my life was changed forever. Final Fantasy 7 defined my life as a gamer, it took me from playing games like Tomb Raider and Porsche Challenge on the PS1 into an avid lover of RPG. Over the years I’ve completed all the main FF series from 7 through to 15 (part way through 15) along with any sequels... I am a seasoned FF player. It then led me into the delights of the Fallout series amongst others. This was a game that led me to have my PlayStation 1 confiscated because I spend so much time on FF7 that I failed my GCSE mock exams as I was playing it too much (only to find my dad secretly playing it when I wasn’t allowed). For many of us FF7 was and still is life and I like so many have been dreaming of a remake for 23 long years! So down to my thoughts on the remake... Firstly it’s a beautiful game. Watching that opening sequence in full cinematic glory literally made me cry. The visuals whether they are in FMV or gameplay are stunning. The original games characters were pretty much expressionless and now suddenly you see every twitch of an eyebrow and every subtle expression change. It’s incredible. I was expecting the characters to exactly resemble their design from the FF7 Advent Children movie but some of them differ slightly, Tifa for example is facially more anime looking. Secondly gameplay... I am 4.5 hours in. While I had my reservations on a change in battle system I think the game is better for it. The original was all turn based whereas the remake is similar to FF15. I like it. For me I don’t think I would be able to play turn based games anymore, I’m too used to RPG’s like fallout and now I favour action battles over turn based. You can use menus to select different actions which is reminiscent of the earlier battle system, which I like, it makes it still feel like FF7 but with more control. Also it’s worth adding that you can either take full control of the other characters in the party like Tifa or Barret or you can just give them commands. I prefer to play as Cloud as much as possible so favour the command system. Story... so it’s hard to comment at this point because they have drawn out the story to make a longer game, this is fine from what I’ve seen so far the story seems spot on. The first reactor mission is virtually identical to the original game with A few add ins. I’m not going to spoil the game for anyone by commenting further but certain elements that creep in later in the game have been brought forward to bring in more of Clouds narrative which would have been needed given how square Enix have decided to present the game. The bit I don’t like... I didn’t research the remake simply because I’ve been waiting so long for this it was hard reading how it kept getting pushed back and how square Enix wanted to do other things despite the outcry for this game. So I didn’t know it would be split into more than one instalment (I’ve read it will be at least 3 parts). I don’t feel that this should have been done in this way and I feel the makers are cashing in on this much beloved game and characters. Apparently FF7 remake takes around 40 hours to complete and is 5 hours worth of the original game. There is no reason the entire game couldn’t have been made in one go. To compare with Fallout 4 which is 300+ hours gameplay this isn’t really acceptable. I feel like Square Enix are exploiting the fans to make as much money as possible. I had to buy a PS4 especially for this as I’m an Xbox user and I’m guessing I’ll be having to buy a PS5 as well. Yes this game will be on Xbox in a years time but I can’t wait that long, I tried, but ended up lasting 1 whole day. This I am not happy with at all. That said it doesn’t detract from the fact what has been made is absurdly amazing. Also where is the battle victory song??? In summary this is a great game and I would recommend it to anyone whether they played the original or not. If you haven’t played the 1997 release I would recommend do so first. This is because Final Fantasy 7 the Remake isn’t just a remake I would say it’s a reboot as well. I say this because yea all the elements of the original are all there you have a lot of added content as well to pad the game out. If you are considering this I would say... just buy it!

The best final fantasy yet!! In gaming history!!
FF7 remake has surpassed the expection of an incredible game which has surpassed the original FF7 hands down with a mass of sales for atmosphere and pure gameplay improvements a vast improvement in comparison to the Original PS1 game which had some major flaws due to it being turn based and with the outdated graphics on the PS1 and limited animations and movements due to the tanky controls not to mention the annoying disc changes (3 discs.) Remake has set the bar very high it's a fantastic remake and they've improved upon it with action style of combat Instead of turn based combat but the Atb gauge is still present which keeps it somewhat true to the orignal, but it's good that there are changes to combat system which was needed in present modern day remake of this game, why make a turn based game with a small following of fans and mixed reviews when you can make an action Rpg that sells and generates more fans and sells high sales which is what has been done here and was really needed. It's a pity Sega didn't choose the same direction for shenmue and give it a full remake rather then the remasters with bad audio that had not been remastered or tweaked, final fantasy 7 remake is an incredible retelling of the original game with a different outcome to certain events and fates which I won't spoil for any one who haven't played it so if anyone does still enjoy the original or remaster they can still play it. That's what makes the remake all the better, The best FF game in history is not an understatement in this rating it's totally true. Let's hope that the 2nd and final chapter 3 will be just as good if not better. This will be a 3disc game like the original but much much better.

All these years later
Played the original as a kid and to this day its still the best game I've ever played. To say I was excited for this is an understatement. It arrived this morning the day before release so I was like a child on Christmas morning exactly like when I first played the original on PS1. The first thing I noticed is how incredible the soundtrack is. Its all the original music but it just sounds brilliantly nostalgic. The visuals are also incredible. This games brings to life characters that only lived in block form previously. All of a sudden its like they've become real. The gameplay is vastly different than the original. You can pick classic mode which I have been told plays more like a turn based game but this puts the game on easy difficultly which I didn't want. The last thing I want is to wait 20 years for a game and then to just rush through on easy. So far the combat is a little button bashy with only the one boss making me use my brain. Its still fun don't get me wrong but I'm hoping as the game goes on just bashing square becomes less effective. The story is the same as the original but plays at a different pace. You are introduced to a certain character here much sooner than in the original. I'm glad its slightly different as wheres the fun in knowing whats at every turn. So far this game lives up to the hype and my lofty expectations. I cannot wait to experience more of it and if it continues like it has started then its going to be a fun ride.

An Amazing game!
Initially I was amazed at how close it resembled the 1997 original and that continued all the way through! The combat system was initially a shock to me as it is no longer turn based you just take control of everyone at the same time. It did take me a long time to get used to, but after playing it I now believe it is an excellent way of fighting, just takes a bit of getting used to! The length of the game is very fair. I don't want to give any spoilers but I would say very fair for the first installment. The voice acting and the graphics are both excellent, the difficulty is well paced, and the storyline is basically an expansion on what the original games first part was! A magnigicent game for anyone who enjoyed the first! If I had to say anything bad it would be the story is linear and you cannot deviate too much, though there are plenty of side quests. However, I am sure that the open world, world map will appear in Part two. Buy this game!

Every high has a low
Final Fantasy VII Remake is the game a lot of fans had been requesting and anticipating for years. As someone who has played the original Final Fantasy VII I was excited to see what they would do for the remake. There is no denying that the original game released 20 years ago would benefit from a huge graphical update but I was also interested in them fleshing out the original plot and characters. For the most part the game delivers everything I wanted except for one huge aspect - the end of the game. For me the game started out great - the characters were likeable, the story followed the original with the odd minor difference here and there, the music was excellent and added a modern spin to the classics, and the action based battle system was fun and involved some strategy to defeat the enemies in front of you. I enjoyed the fact that they had recreated so many enemies, weapons, skills and had added some new interesting ones. The majority of the bosses are fun to fight and most have a 3-tiered approach where they increasingly get harder. There are a few side quests but none of them were particularly memorable in my opinion and they mostly ask you to defeat a certain enemy or find / deliver a certain item. The graphics are mostly brilliant and they have recreated the original areas with great detail and added parts here and there; there is the odd item and location that looks decidedly low-res but it never negatively impacted my enjoyment. I had some minor complaints; I felt there was some unnecessary padding to the plot that didn’t add anything to the overall experience, which was odd because at other times I felt they weren’t ambitious enough, for example, if we are to spend the whole game in Midgar why not explore more of it and see even more slums and locations? Furthermore, to defeat some bosses you seemed to have to follow a dictated strategy and if you didn’t have the right equipment equipped in advance you were severely punished for it. I was also a bit disappointed that the game constantly dictates who you can have in your party and when; there are 4 characters you can control but you are never in a situation where you decide which of the 3 you want to use as the game always decides depending on what chapter you in. Despite the minor gripes, overall I was enjoying the game really well until I got towards the end. The ending chapters (and in particular the last chapter) kind of veered off course for me. We start to see more deviations from the original plot, which in itself is not necessarily a bad thing, however the changes seemed completely out of sync with the original FFVII and the rest of the game I had played up to that point. Due to the huge tone and design shift at times it felt like I was playing a completely different game and story and I kept asking myself “why” - what was so wrong with the original chain of events that necessitated the changes? The ending in particular, without spoiling it, is something that did not appeal to me. I’m not quite sure who the ending is aimed at but I can’t really see it satisfying old fans or new fans and it takes the next installment in a worrying direction, one which I would be very hesitant to buy into after finishing the game. To be clear, the ending does not take away the 30 hours or more I thoroughly enjoyed playing the game, however, those last moments definitely did negatively impact my overall impression of the game. I guess it is one of those games that people will make their own minds whether they are satisfied with the outcome or not. A lot may depend on your expectations from the original. As for New Game + I wasn’t really impressed with the way it was done. You get the opportunity to challenge each chapter in ‘Hard mode’ which essentially means that the enemies are tougher and you can’t use items; not being able to use items seemed unnecessarily punitive to me. You can choose whatever chapter you like and skip between them at will, however, to access any part of the game you have skip through huge sections of dialogue and story as the game will always take you to the start of the chapter - if you just want to challenge that one boss, or level up, you pretty much have to go through the whole chapter to do it. Also, you still can’t decide who you have in your team as it’s decided by which chapter you are in. As a result of this I did get tired of the New Game + quite quickly and it is probably better to approach it as a whole new playthrough. Overall for the most part this is a great game. I enjoyed the time I spent with it but the end of the game soured the experience slightly and my motivation to play New Game + rapidly dwindled as time went on. If you’re looking for a good 30+ hour RPG then this might be worth a shot and if you’re a fan of the original you might want to give it a go but you might be in for some surprises (not all of which you’ll necessarily like). I enjoyed this one but where they go with the next game will determine whether I buy the next!

Spoiler free opinion
So it finally arrived....the game isn't for all, some new folks will fall in love with it, core fans might hate it and some won't look at it twice. Let me explain. I absolutely fell in love with the game after the demo, it's crisp, the characters are quite true to their nature, beautiful and the sound track is amazing. It's a remake not a remaster so we were expecting major changes including the materia mechanics, the new combat system (not really turn based anymore), the side quests, game play overall and some other things like mini games. I really enjoy the game, after 60 hours, I felt the first chunk of ff7 was pretty good and solid. I did all the side quests, enjoyed the views and enjoyed kicking Shinra ass. However.....sometimes the camera angle was a bit wonky. I felt the side quests were a bit lame, I didn't really like the way you could summon and I think the main story could have been a bit longer (all opinion based). Overall I thought it was a good shot at a remake and pleasantly surprising too. I do recommend this game to old and new fans. You can't go wrong with a Cloud. Enjoy!

Redefines what a remake can be
Man, is this game good. I never played the original FF7 and I think that actually improved my experience, because this is not a straight remake of the PS1 classic. Square have reimagined the game and expanded on it in ways that never cease to surprise. The combat takes a more action focus, removed the turn-based system and replacing it with real-time attacks that feel almost like a Kingdom Hearts game. Characters that were once one-note and flat now have backstories and personalities, and areas that were glanced over are now entire chapters with multiple quests and boss battles. The soundtrack is easily a 10/10, and keeps the old FF7 charm while adding sweeping orchestral notes next door to dubstep and intentionally awful 90's rap. Anyone hopes for a faithful remake is going to leave disappointed, but anyone else looking for engaging gameplay with a memorable cast will be on the edge of their seat until the credits roll. Now we just have to wait 10 years for the next part to come out...

Average at best
I've waited until I got the platinum trophy for it before leaving my review, and I've platinumed every final fantasy game with the exception of 14 which I really like but play on pc. I also have been playing final fantasy games for a long time, I've completed all main line games 1 through to 15. Just a big rpg lover 😄 Also too many reviews are based on a few hours of game play which is crazy, finish the game first and then give your thoughts!! I enjoyed the first few hours alot myself but it goes down hill! Review games in full not a small %! Rant over. Ok so 3 stars I feel is a fair review and I hate being super negative to games as I'd hate to be a game dev (must be horrible to see negative things about things you create.) I feel the game is actually a good reflection on the original, (few hours) the characters are really well designed and represented really well. Also the game is clearly a beauty to look at which is no surprise with who's making it! I also for the most part enjoyed the sound track as it's great to hear old classics in a new way. Sadly that's all the positives out of the way, the game feels like a padded out demo.. the addition of really boring side quests to add more game time, (game its self isnt long enough by far.) And how can so many chapters be that dull? Are we expected to buy more than 5 or 6 games just to finish the game? Who knows how many games it will end up at. Boss fights start off really wow! But they all follow similar patterns in that they have phases and it can be frustrating to stagger a boss for it then to switch to its next phase and the stagger bar is reset. I have no major problems with the combat it's fine similar to kingdom hearts combat style but it feels more fun on KH. Also slight spoiler but glitch alert.. when in the vents on chapter 16 I looked down one of the optional vents for it to not let me out of viewing the vent.. a game breaking glitch! I googled it and I wasnt alone and my friend also reported the same issue. I only want my opinion to be heard as I LOVE the series and it makes me so sad there hasn't been an amazing final fantasy for so long now! I have all but given up hope for an epic final fantasy again. So yeah the game just isnt fun for most parts there are some fun chapters and the scenes look amazing but there is just far too much padding and boring stuff throughout. An average game.
