Q: Does this work much better than keeping your sim in a mobile as a hot spot - what is the difference

In my experience, there are a number of reasons this is better 1. It’s dedicated to doing what it does; no battery to go flat, and you can walk away with your phone and not lose the connection 2. The Wi-fi on this is massively stronger and better range than you can get on your phone 3. This handles multiple devices connecting at the same time with ease 4. Most importantly for me, this has an Ethernet port so you can not only hardwire local devices but you can use powerlines to cast internet around your house It’s a superb bit of kit!

Q: Can I set up port forwarding .

Yes, but not many UK mobile networks are open to use port forwarding in the UK unless you have a fixed IP simcard as they all use NAT to share out the external IP addresses.

Q: Do you need a special voip phone, or just a normal landline phone, to use the phone port? uk based systems.

You can use a normal landline phone but you may need a rj11 adapter as the phone port isn't the same as a UK one but they are very cheap to buy. You can then use the mobile number associated with your sim for incoming/outgoing calls (provided it is not a data only sim you use) For VoIP you could use voip adapter in the Ethernet socket in the back of the Tenda, the plug the landline phone into that and then if you have a VoIP service already use that instead.
