Yes, the figure it packaged in its original box, and the box is then packaged in a plastic see through box to protect the box from damage.

Q: is this different in some way from the original version?

No not really. However the one I got was pretty weak. It got tipped over where it stood without actually falling any distance and the head snapped off. As part of an in boxcollection however it's no different.
