Gentleman: A Timeless Guide to Fashion

While this fairly large book is impressive in its use of large glossy imagery, that cannot make up for the sheer amount of substance missing from the accompanying text.Some items of a man's wardrobe are provided scant description, history or wearing recommendations at all. The cummerbund, for example, receives only two or three sentences. The necktie only receives two knots to try out - but the article is spread across two full pages!A lot of the content is very airy and ambiguous, and fails to provide any in-depth or insider knowledge about anything. A lot of space is dedicated to descriptions which anybody could give you. For example - on mobile phones, the book simply explains that you can put it in a pocket, or perhaps a holder... great. A whole section was dedicated to that.Some descriptions run like: "people through history have worn belts, belts make you look good, you should wear a belt, because a belt makes you look like a gentleman." Filler. Lots and lots of filler and obviously so little research or professional knowledge. So little information in such a large space.I have worked in menswear for a few years, not particularly trying to learn much about it, and I found myself knowing more about each item than the book could say on every page.I was hoping to learn about why things are worn, why certain cuts are important, what should and should not be combined. None of that happened. Its big, glossy, and useless.Waste of money.

Bought the first edition but it seems to have gone AWOL. So this updated one fills the gap nicely. Beautifully put together (photography is especially high-grade) this is full of useful tips and pointers for the man who feels he needs a guiding hand when it comes to grasping the principles of style as opposed to fashion. This is not for guys who grab the nearest pair of Adidas joggers and go out feeling dressed.
