More featuers, lower cost!
I have an older Actron unit which reads generic DTC codes, but not the vehicle specific ones, so I purchased this unit after seeing several recommendations from people on several forums. This found a sensor fault in my 4x4 system - an axle speed sensor that my older unit couldn't find. This paid for itself the first time I used it. There were mentions in some reviews on Amazon that the unit was unusable, because it had to be updated, but I found the updating process straight forward. The enclosed instructions were clear and I had the latest firmware and vehicle specific files downloaded in about 10 minutes. The only thing lacking in the instructions was how to get the display into English rather than Chinese - it took a few button pushes and English became the default. I've read that there are youtube videos out there demonstrating it, but it wasn't that difficult to find the language setting option. My only concern is the registration process that you do to get access to the download files (firmware and vehicle specific ones). You enter the device serial number and another code unique to your scanner - making it possible to limit your access to future updates. It's not an immediate concern, as I have the vehicle files for all of my existing vehicles, but it appears that the manufacturer could easily "expire" your ability to download files in the future if they chose to.I purchased this because it has the capability to read ABS & PCM modules as well as the ECM, and has coverage for a very wide variety of cars, including my Jaguar.

Great Value Scanner --HOW TO UPDATE--
This is a good fully functional scanner; hard to beat the price. I found it comprehensive and fairly quick. After fumbling through the settings menu I was able to change language from Chinese to English. At that point the tool performed just fine (read codes ect..), but i wanted to update to the latest info. This is where I had issues. Below is the solution I found to my update problems.I hope it helps.First of all this is a Creader VIII NOT a LAUNCH CR129, so the LAUNCH site, downloads and customer service will be worthless. However, there is a full site with info and updates available. I found great info at: [...]This visual guide helped too: [...]-1. Go to [...] and register (top right corner) to establish an account. I received confirmation in my email (junk folder)-2. Go back to [...] and login with the account you created. Navigate to the "product register" tab on the right. Input your info (the product type is Creader VIII, serial number is on back of tool, and password is found found on scan tool (power up with USB) navigate to: Help-Tool Info -Register Code---make a note of the version information in the "Tool Info" page. This should change after the update. I took a before pic with my cell phone----3. Once tool is registered you can download the update utility and files (tab on the right). I downloaded all files except JPISUZU (it is in Chinese only, not useful to me) and saved them in a new folder on my computer.-4. I extracted all files (right click on file, extract all). I searched through the extracted files and opened "Creader Update Setup. exe" file. This will install the required program and downloader.-5. Remove SD card from scan tool, place in USB adapter and plug in to computer.-6. Launch the card reader program you just installed and enter wequired information, click update. input password you created during registration. Select desired files and click download (I selected all). When download completes (mine took several minutes) eject the USB reader and re-install SD card in tool.-7. Power tool up with USB. If everything went well you should see and update screen. "OK" the update and wait.VOILA, updated Creader VIII.Good Luck and happy scanning :-)

what a scanner!
I am impressed with this thing. I needed something to diagnose transmission problems, couldn't find any scanner in the 200$ price range to do what I needed it to do. I came across this and got to try it out today. It is fantastic! I have access to information that I didn't know existed. Reall time data and shows everything accurately. Update was a little annoying but worked out good. Also I wish they would make the casing out of better plastic, other than that its the bomb.

Way more than I expected. This tool is fantastic.
First, I would recommend this to anyone who wants to buy a entry level scan tool. I performed several tests on different cars such as 2002 Lexus, 2006 Subaru, 1996 Saturn, Etc. This works fantastic. It reads everything quickly. The interface is friendly the screen looks nice. I haven't had a chance to perform the test on newer model cars though. For anyone that think it doesn't work properly or as expected, I strongly recommend you upgrade it first. For less than 300 bucks, no scan tool can beat this one.

I have used the unit now on a. number ...
I have used the unit now on a.number of vehicles but found that perticulare vehicles such as Mercedes, BMW etc. It could not read Traction control codes or ABS codes or it would just say not available. I also feel that a hard case other than the cardboard box it was shipped in would be much appreciated and look more professional.Other than that it has functioned very well and with small improvement could be a.winner
