Perfect for steel studs and 1/2 inch diameter toggles
If you have sheet metal rather than proper wood studs, you likely know how much of a pain they are when it comes to mounting heavy objects. Toggle bolts (I prefer SnapToggles) are great for plain drywall, but sometimes you either encounter or actually want to put a toggle through a steel stud. For these scenarios, this is the bit you want.First, be aware of the length of this bit; it's just enough for 5/8" drywall, but not much thicker. It's also meant strictly for boring a 1/2" hole. It does the latter exceptionally well. With light to moderate pressure and low RPMs, this goes through sheet metal studs with about 15-20 seconds of drilling. I've drilled dozens of holes through sheet metal and many more through plain drywall and this bit is still going strong. An extra 1/16" length would be appreciated, but if your drill has a robust chuck and you're not drilling into sheet metal studs behind more than 5/8" drywall, this will serve you well.

Best step drill bit
I bought a pair of Greenlee step drill bits several years ago, and bought two more this time because the bit worked so well. We built a variety of frames and structural supports using stainless steel, Uni-strut, rebar, aluminum, and cast iron. Once the pilot hole is drilled, this step drill cuts thru them almost like butter. The first 1/2" step drill probably lasted over several thousand cutting before the edge became dull. Because the cutting edge is so sharp and hard, it takes a little getting used to when the drill is new. If you push too hard, the hole can get bigger than you intended to be. It's best to use it on a drill press with preset depth if possible. This drill bit his highly recommended.

Very good step bit.
So far so good. I've used it on 1900 boxes, panels and multiple other enclosures. My only complaint is the price. I'll update if anything comes up.

Make Building a Home Brewery so Much Easier.
I was given a damaged 5 gallon keg by a friend and intended to turn it into a heat exchanger, but to do that I needed to put a few holes in it. In the past when I needed to drill into metal I have worked around having to buy a step bit. Boy am I glad I did, it makes clean and precise whole very easily. No more work-arounds for me.

Five Stars
Great tool. Little costly but worth it. Use oil so it lasts longer and works better

Perfect !!!! works like a charm
You can't buy any uni-bit better than a GreenLee. The reason I say this is because this is the ONLY bit that's fluted on both sides. Most other unibits have a single flute to extract the metal shavings. The greenlee has two, so that means less resistance on your cuts and faster drilling because the metal can escape the dill bit faster.I've been using greenlee uni-bits for 10 years and only replace them every two-three years, and i use them daily on steel and aluminum drilling for electrical work.

Greenlee 34401 step drill. Brilliant
I've used one of these before for drilling a 12mm hole. Before this I would use a 12mm HSS drill bit that left a horrible burr on the back of the hole. The difference between the two being that the step drill left an almost clean hole in stainless steel. Though I can't comment on how many holes it will drill before becoming blunt, I can say that is far better than the step drill I had previously.

Ordered the wrong size!
I needed a unibit that drills 1” knockouts and by mistake ordered this one and had to return it. Just a heads up the biggest hole this model makes is 3/4”.

Cuts fast and as Greenlee holds up to the name for the best step bit out there so should last a long time

Much faster for punching out holes than a hole saw in metal. Also really nice when installing overhead doors for when the holes don't line up.

Great Bit, gotta be careful when drilling through electrical boxes as this strong bit will pull the box if you are not holding on tight.
