Pretty Motifs, Reminiscent of Traditional Irish Crochet, With Clear Instructions
Many of these pretty motifs remind me of traditional Irish crochet. The samples are crocheted in #10 bedspread cotton, but the motifs can be crocheted from any weight of thread or yarn (including sport weight and worsted weight). Using different weights will only affect the size of the finished motifs. The clear instructions are written out (no charts); and are printed in type that is large enough to make enlarged photocopies unnecessary. In all but one pattern, the instructions fit on a single page. The booklet cover photo shows a representative sampling of the 50 motifs, which include a heart, a fan, a fancy star, and a Christian cross. All of the motifs can be appliqued to garments or household items to provide interesting decorative accents. Many of the motifs (circles, squares, flowers) can be joined together to make lovely doilies, placemats, or bedspreads.

Great Tool
Plenty of variety of motifs w good written patterns. Motifs can be used in so many ways. Just because it says thread motifs in the title, doesn't mean you have to use thread to make the motif. The patterns are good, use your imagination with different yarns, adjust the hook, make other things...Motifs can brighten up a Christmas tree, made into a mobile, make a shawl or shawlette, even use 1-2, maybe in 3 motifs and do a free-form shrug. Possibilities are endless. Let creativity run

Thread crochet motifs
I purchased this book looking for small motifs I could use for crocheted coasters, and found it to be filled with lovely patterns. I even found ones perfect for the coasters I wanted to make.

Nice selection of motifs -- nothing too complicated ...
There's a good variety of designs in lots of different shapes -- hexagons, squares, circles, flowers, etc. Many of these will serve nicely as jumping off points for projects. None are technically very difficult -- I'd say almost all of them could be made by advanced beginners, folks who've learned to handle a steel hook and thread. But as with most crochet designs, these can also be made with yarn and a larger hook. Yes, it says "Thread Motifs," but don't be afraid to try them with yarn. Many of these would be wonderful as the foundation of an afghan design instead of the traditional granny square. One tip: if you're planning to use one of these as part of a larger project (say a tablecloth, afghan, bedspread, set of placemats, etc.), make one motif in your thread (or yarn) of choice, unravel, and measure. Use that as a basis to purchase the material you'll need. I've done that for a set of placemats and coasters, and it worked perfectly. My only quibble (and it's a small one) is that I'd like more square-shaped motifs. The round and floral designs can be fairly easily "squared" with the addition of a row or two, so it's not a huge problem.Overall, a nice selection of motifs with good clear instructions.
