So easy, a caveman could do it...
I'm not shy about trying anything at least once. The walkway to our new home is a series of large sandstone formations. It's treacherous to get over them, and nothing short of walking on marbles as they wear from foot traffic. I cut a 3' wide path and jackhammered out about 2" below grade to form a sidewalk to the parking area. The wife didn't want the traditional gray concrete or broom finish - as that would look to polished for the area where the house is located. After watching a few YT videos, we had the HolidayInnExpress epiphany and said "We can do that!"I was reluctant to spring a Benjamin on what seemed like nothing more than a 30" piece of rubber. But, when paired with the releasing powder (colored to accent the sandstone), and 1/4 bottle of quikrete brown concrete coloring added per two 60lb bags of sakrete, it absolutely was worth it.I've yet to pour the main stretch of sidewalk. But today, I formed out a 36" square test bed, filling it with 120lbs of sakrete. It resulted in a 2" slab for testing purposes. My primary concerns were a) how much color needed to be added to have the desired base color, b) at what point in the finishing process would the concrete be 'just right' for stamping, and c) what effect would the colored release powder have on the finished product.I've attached a couple of pictures of my test slab.Poured and rough troweled (2.75 qts of colored water to each 60lb bag of Lows sacrete)Set for 15 min, then skimmed again with trowelWaited another 30 min for the surface water to evaporate"broadcast" release powder across surface (using dust pan brush to avoid clumping)Stamped at about 45 min after pourThe results are spectacular. I was not able to get this stamp to conform to the vertical edges of the form box (since the forms were 2" taller than the slab), but that was to be expected. I'm ordering a flexible texture stamp now to address those areas. Also, the final sidewalk form will be flush with the slab, so I should have very few areas where I'm up against a wall.FWIW, the attached picture does the finished look an injustice. The depth of the relief and the shadows/highlights they create are simply not captured by a 2D image.
