Is there any tips or suggestions to extend the life of this iron on patches for jeans? I am a newbie to try this patch.

About our iron on patches for jeans, the most important thing is is ensure smooth and seamless edges
Following tips may help you:
1, Lay the base item on a flat, pre-ironed & smooth the fabric before you iron on patches.
2, The adhesive side of our iron on patches for jeans should be flat against the base fabric. Make sure that the patch isn't crooked.
3, When you iron on patches , make sure the "steam" option is turned off, and that your iron isn't full of water.
4, Place a thin towel / teflon sheet over the denim patch. They will protect the denim patch. itself and the surrounding fabric.
5, Hold the iron over the denim patch for about 50 seconds. Apply as much pressure as you can by pressing down firmly.
6, After iron on the denim patch check to see whether the patch is fixed on securely by gently rubbing at the edge with a finger, trying to lift it. If it lifts up a bit, replace the towel and press it with the iron again.
7, Hand wash is better than laundry. Using cold water when you wash our iron on patches for jeans and allow it to air dry / low heat dry.

Will these denim patch work on the crotch area that has a hole already?

These are typical iron-on patches especially applicable to Levis but also useful for any fabric (I patched my bed sheets with these). Patching a hole in the crotch-area is iffy. You must be able to flatten the fabric to be patched otherwise the iron cannot create enough heat to reach all edges. For this product I used a thin cloth between the patch and iron.
