Q: Are there patches on the back?

No, bought last year and It did not have any

Q: i just ordered this jacket and i am worried about it smelling like the review said. Is that an issue?

Well I guess it depends if yours smells when you get it. We did not return because we did so much too it trying to get the smell out. I even removed the inside lining and its still there. Still smells like fish to this day. I don't remember exactly what I wrote but I know for a fact it still smells like fish. So if you get yours and it smells I would return because honestly using it again will probably never happen.
