Foolproof Walking-Foot Quilting Designs: Visual Guide • Idea Book

Okay book if you want only to quilt with a walking foot
This book has some good ideas for quilting designs, using a walking foot (and a few where I would not use a walking foot. The author provides a number of clocks (one clock means little time; 3 clocks means much more time needed to quilt this design). This is helpful information. She demonstrates how to make your own templates, but many of the templates are about the same -- either they are slightly bigger or smaller or "fatter" or "thinner" so it seems to me to be somewhat repetitious. Throughout the first half of the book, she shows how to quilt different quilt patterns with a picture of the complete quilt in the last half of the book -- all in color. However, a picture of a complete quilt on one page does not provide much detail of the quilting. I recommend it if you are looking for ideas for using your walking foot, but there are other books that are better. (At least I think they are better because they also include quilt patterns, with directions for making the quilt and how to quilt it.)

Mary Mashuta Does It Again!!!
Mary Mashuta does it again!!! In her new book, Mary, an award winning quilter, teacher and writer, opens the quilting doors even wider by sharing her creative and original ideas for foolproof quilting with a walking foot. “Walking Foot Quilting Designs” is chock full of excellent ideas for quilting your own tops and for taking ownership of your project to it’s completion. The techniques are practical, accessible, and very creative. I love how Mary opens the reader’s eyes to discovering quilting designs “everywhere” and how she shares her ideas on how to easily and inexpensively make templates and utilize other simple quilting techniques. What a playful approach to quilting!! The “gallery” of quilts is also fabulous and includes Mary’s signature style of traditional quilts combined with contemporary fabrics like those of Kaffe Fassett. I have all of Mary Mashuta’s quilt books. Each one is a treasure; each one, better than the next.

Lots of ideas for walking foot quilting
Great ideas for going beyond straight lines for walking foot quilting. The book provides tips on making your own templates and combining simple squares, circles, and triangles into elaborate looking quilt patterns. As a newbie to walking foot quilting, I found her method of rating the designs by time and complexity involved to be helpful. The book even shows examples of how the finished quilted patterns look on actual fabric. Lots of great ideas to try to expand on your walking foot quilting skills.

Photos too busy to showcase quilting
Pattern suggestions are good. However, most of the examples are demonstrated using photos of quilts. I can barely see the stitching in only a few of the photos. Most of the photos the quilting is impossible to see because the fabric and piecing are really the focus of the quilts. The examples would be better used for a book on design. Disappointed.

Not crazy about this book. It seems dated, and has very little in the way of actual instructions. There are a few pages of designs that must be created using folded paper templates at the beginning of each chapter. The remainder of the book is very basic beginner quilting instruction, and examples of how the techniques look on quilts. The examples are on such busy fabric that they are hard to see. I'm also not wild about sticking contact paper onto my quits, but that's just me.

not what I was looking for
The book has colorful photographs. I was hoping for pantographs to copy or trace. This is more of a here's what it will look like. For the price I paid, it is okay.

Love This Book!
Mary Mushata is an icon in the world of quilting and I've been following her for many years. This is a beautiful book full of inspirational photos and lots of how to. It sits next to my sewing machine because I'm machine quilting my own quilt for the first time. I wouldn't have known where to start without it. Every technique is rated beginner to advanced. It's been a great purchase.

Designs for smaller quilt tops
I was excited to order this book for walking foot quilting as I am still learning free motion. While the designs presented are numerous, the notation that manipulating any quilt top larger than 60" x 60" confirmed that these ideas are just not practical for a larger quilt using a walking foot. For example, concentric circles were shown. Okay, but maneuvering a quilt top in a circle underneath a walking foot? Fine for a small quilt, but not helpful for a larger quilt.Overall there were many photographs but little instruction-- I guess I expected too much, using a walking foot creativly on a larger quilt top.

There are some great ideas but very few details or instructions on how ...
I had high hopes because I want to add more interest to my quilts, but this book is very frustrating! There are some great ideas but very few details or instructions on how plan and then execute the designs. There are line-drawn illustrations of the patterns, and these are useful. The worst thing is the choice of photographs! The quilts chosen to illustrate the quilting designs are so colourful that, in most cases, you can't see the quilting! It would have been much better to show the backs of the quilts. The final chapter is a Gallery of the author's beautiful, bright quilts with a bit of information about the quilting, but, sadly, I could hardly make out any of the designs! If the author ever does another edition, I hope she chooses better photographs.

easy to follow
The instructions are clear and easy to follow, not to wordy which suits me. She starts you off with designs and encourages you to explore ideas to come up with your own. starts with simple ideas and how to expand these. No drawing or marking required, reusable temples to stitch around are used. The one downside is that some times the fabrics in the used in the illustrations mask the stitching. As the stitching technique is the point of the book its a shame but there are diagrams as well.

Not a must have book.
There are some useful ideas in this book but it is badly let down by the photographs as it is really difficult to see the quilting. There is not a lot of help about planning or choosing a design but there are some good solutions for achieving a design once you have chosen one.

Quilting.
Great pictures and creative ideas but not enough practical detail. Still glad I have it though.
