Q: can they be used outdoors?

Yes. They are plastic do they should be fine outdoors for a while.

Q: How do you keep the snowflakes spaced when stringing together?

I actually dropped a little dab of hot glue at both ends of the snowflake to hold it where I wanted it to hang on the cord. The other option is to tie a glass or silver bead as a stopper below each snowflake.

Q: Do the iridescent ones have a coating that will melt off in water? I want to use them in vases with clear filler and water. Thanks!

I have not tried putting them in water, but is my opinion that the finish is safe to be submerged in water.

Q: Do you think the shape of these will make rainbows if hit with the sun just right?

Hi Wendy - these are plastic . . . and while they do look beautiful, they do not have the right facets to make rainbows. They will sparkle a little. Perhaps if they were glass and the light caught them just the right way, but I don't think the physics/shape of these is right to make rainbows. I do recommend them, however, as they looked stunning hanging under my large spruce tree near my entrance to my home. Fun for winter decor and lasted the winter months just fine!
