SHOP FOX W1730 Oscillating Edge Sander

My Powermatic spindle sander quit oscillating and I ordered the W1730 and the Jet JOVS-10 with the idea that I would keep the machine that would give me the most utility. The Jet arrived first and I had to send it back because it was damaged. The Fox arrived in great shape. This was my first Fox tool and I was apprehensive. I was very pleasantly suprised when I uncrated the machine. One small nick on the motor cover was the only damage I saw and was not large enough to worry about. The finish is very good and appears to be on par with Jet, Delta, and Powermatic. Everything works as it should, the tension mechanism, the stock table, the platen, the adjustable spindle sander table, the motor, and switch. This is a very nice machine and after only two weeks I can tell that it will be used as much as the jointer. Smooth running with excellent results at a reasonable price. The fit, finish, and operation will not disappoint and if you have never used an edge sander you will be suprised at what a nice addition to a shop it is.A few things would be nice on this machine. If the platen had stops and 45 and 90 degrees that would be a plus. Not a deal breaker because most work is 90 degrees. It would also be nice if the machine was a little longer but then price would increase.This machine will not replace a good spindle sander because the spindle does not oscillate. The stock table must be moved up and down. It is ok for small items but I can see where a large project requiring the spidle attachment could destroy the sanding belt. The question I have now is do I re-order the JOVS-10 or do I purchase the Shop Fox which is $200 less? Even though I started this with the idea of getting more utility for my money, I am very happy on how it turned out. Had the Jet not been damaged in transport I would have certainly kept both machines. SHOP FOX W1730 Oscillating Edge Sander

This is a very stout machine, and unlike the cheaper Jet and Delta models the table height adjustment is effortless and fast one-handed. It also precise and gives me a perfect 90 degree sanded edge for glue-ups. The spindle attachment is also a very nice feature. It is non-oscillating (spindle), but the belt oscillates about 1/2" up and down with reliable tracking. Tracking adjustment is not convenient, but also I only had to set it once. The machine runs smooth and quiet with no vibration.After months of research I decided this (or the Grizzly equivalent) was the way to go and do not regret it. it does require 220v power though. There were other machines out there that looked good (Baileigh) but their belt lengths were not standard. Highly recommend, would buy it again.

The sander works very well. It arrived in a timely manner with no damage. Every thing was aligned from the factory. Assembly was not a problem. I am very happy with this unit.
