Piece of Junk, Buyer Beware!
Stay as far away from this product as possible. It's a piece of junk. Nowhere near the quality of the original Ronco Buttoneer that was sold in the 1970's. Bought this for my 83 year old father. He was unable to get it to fasten a button to either his shirts or his slacks. Thought it might just be him having difficulty. Went over to try for myself. The little plastic wing things that hold the button in place are not very strong or very long. I was unable to get a button to fasten and hold to anything other than an extremely thin (think paper thin) piece of fabric.Trying to return this item for a refund has been an exercise in futility. The seller offers a return policy that is impossible to meet: "If you are not pleased with your purchase, you may return it within 60 days for a refund. These items have to be unused, unopened and in resalable condition." What a Catch-22 situation!. If the thing worked we would not be trying to return it. Since we used it and found out how much of a piece of junk it is, I'm unable to return it. Thankfully I'm not out a lot of money, but still. The seller does not stand behind this product at all. Buyer beware!

It got worse, if that's possible.
I had one of these years ago so I kind of knew what I was getting into. I only needed it to fasten buttons for cosmetic purposes, not actually function. I'm very familiar with this product because like I said, I had used it years ago and quite often.I cannot believe how bad this product is considering it was marginal at best years ago. One faster after the other kept snapping off, breaking, or wouldn't catch. I was determined to see how many fasteners it would take to put on one button. All said and done, it took 22 fasteners to get one button attached... Barely. This is a very bad product.

New fasteners DO NOT HOLD! Used to be a great product. Now it's junk!
Very disappointed in the new strips. I have had this product for years and it was always great in an emergency. I lost my unit during a move and as I had a need a bought a new unit. The unit itself seems to be identical to the one I had. Not so for the plastic fasteners that seem mto much much thinner and cheaper than the ones that came with my original unit.I know how to use the unit and occasionally did not have the strip properly seated and wasted a fastener. The fasteners that came with this product are just the worst. I wasted several before getting a button attached. However I only got one fastener to hold. The others just kept breaking off. One fastener actually used to be enough in the past to hold a shirt button in place. Not so this time. The button was gone when I was work. I don't know where it fell off but I have not found that button yet. I'm loathe to try the remaining spare button on the shirt. I will try it on another shirt just to be sure, but I have a feeling I may be returning this product.. Missed my return window :-( Just tried it again and the plastic fasteners just keep popping off.

The 90s were great but this is not the same Buttoneer quality
Years ago I recall this wonderful tool being advertised. Unfortunately throughout the years and moves I had lost my old one. This Buttoneer appeared to look just like my original. I was excited as I had a couple pairs of shorts the button had come off of and was going to use it. Loaded the Buttoneer with the fasteners that came with it and the first two did not penetrate the cotton fabric. Reviewing once more the instructions I validated my use was correct. The fasteners were securely inserted into the Buttoneer. Two more fasteners could not penetrate the cotton fabric. I waited and allowed my wife to attempt it. As most women do, she read the instructions, and proceeded to get the same results I had previously gotten as the tool would not push the fasteners through the cotton fabric. I will say this used to be a great life-saver but whatever has changed has really made this a waste.

Complete redesign of the original Buttoneer
I was pleasantly surprised to find the the current tool has been completely re-designed since the last one I owned about 30 years ago,.The old design used single-hole buttons and had but a single attachment point to the garment, plus you could buy them only from the manufacturer, The new tool attaches standard 4-hole buttons and uses all four holes which gives you a much more robust attachment to the garment. The only downside is that the attachment links are a bit tricky to get into the tool and have them feed properly, so plan to use 2 or 3 of them to complete your first attachment.

Claims to be original design, but note the lack of registered trademark and copyright
Not only does this product not work, it cannot work. My Mum got one of these way back in the 70s and it worked to the point of overkill. The design was adapted from devices used in clothing stores to attach price tags to garments. It came with different lengths of fasteners for different fabrics/tasks and you either attached buttons one hole at a time or used included single-hole buttons. This pale imitation uses U-shaped plastic fasteners barely an eighth of an inch long. The design logic is that this is enough to pass through the thickness of the fabric AND the button to achieve secure fastening of button to cloth. Three attempts and I was done. Tragic performance aside, this item is also highly dangerous. To use it, you must press two dull, shoddy, hypodermic-type needles through your button and fabric of choice directly towards your waiting hand. The force needed to do this results in high odds for impaling a digit/small child/cell mate. In the end, it would cost no more to remanufacture the original design. This ain't it. Avoid, or use only for that special gift of hate.

Does the job,,,
I like it,,, I read a lot of reviews that said it doesn't work,,, a friend told me about this so I got it,,, difficult to use at first but once I got the hang of it, it worked very well,,, what you need to remember is that the plastic thing has to be ALL THE WAY IN the tool,,, then the points have to be ALL THE WAY THROUGH the shirt,,, and then push the plunger SLOWLY,,, and then the button is firmly attached,,, I fixed a few shirts in a matter of minutes,,,

Theory reasonable, practice rubbish.
As a retired engineer I can see the theory behind this "tool" but in practice its woefully inadequate. The two spikes that are supposed to pierce the cloth are too blunt & I had trouble with something as thin as a shirt cuff. With the waistband of a pair of shorts the spikes just wouldn't go through & I had to resort to marking it up & making two holes with a needle which somewhat defeats the object of using this tool. The little plastic fasteners just don't work & I've lost count of how many I've wasted trying to do only two buttons. I might be rubbish with a needle & cotton but I know I can make a better & quicker job of fixing buttons back on than this rubbish tool.

Waste of Money
What a disappointment! I watched the instruction video on you tube and thought it looked very simple and effective. Upon receipt I eagerly tried it to replace a button on a pair of cords. Problem 1 the prongs are only about 1 cm. Problem 2 they are very blunt so much so that they wouldn't even pierce the cuff of a shirt. Try sewing a button the conventional way with a needle as blunt as that and you'd soon get annoyed. My advice would be to get a sharp needle and cotton and do it that way!

This does not do what it claims to.
Not a patch on the original buttoneer of a few decades ago. These may work on the very thinnest of buttons, with the very thinnest of material, but I would not trust them to hold for very long if you managed to get even one to attach. I tried, even making a solid backing piece in wood, but could not succeed in getting one to work. An absolute waste of money. A bug disappointment.

Disappointed
Firstly this item is only available from the states therefore takes a bit of time to arrive. It does do what it says it does but you tend to use far more of the fasteners than you should because of the design. It also has a lot of trouble getting through thicker fabric and could not hold my trouser button the first time I tried to use the button off it came.

Brilliant
Oh at last I can put buttons back on. Now I'm older I can't thread a needle and I make a right hash of sewing anyway. This is perfect. |Easy to use and buttons are very secure in my experience.
