More Fun Than Should Be Allowed!
More Fun Than Should Be Allowed! First let me say that while I have reviewed other quadcopters, I bought this one on my own and paid full price. It never makes a difference in my reviews, but I wanted to be clear that this was not a requested review....I bought this Syma X8W FPV quadcopter because I wanted a reference unit to base my review of the X5SW-1 quadcopter on. Aside from the obvious differences; bigger, heavier, more powerful, and consequently more stable in wind, the Syma X8W is just a more "polished" offering. I would not hesitate to send this to a family member or friend who is into R/C (Radio Controlled) flight. This is consumer-grade, but closely approaching hobby-grade for a remarkably low price. No, it's not a DJI Phantom, but it is what I consider an excellent and stable quadcopter to learn on. I'd MUCH rather crash this unit, (I've been lucky enough to avoid doing so yet!) than crash a near $1,000.00 quadcopter while trying new tricks, or scouting a location doing test runs to see how video would look rather than burning through my batteries in my HD video quadcopter and risking damaging on with an unexpected obstacle. All good on the flight end. Is it gyrocompass driven? No. But it is as stable as I've ever seen a sub $500 unit be. It's not overly acrobatic, but it isn't meant to be. It's meant to carry a camera and take steady video footage.Which brings us to the camera - The camera is fine for proofing aerial runs to review roughly how they will look and what you want to include/omit from your footage when you are ready to shoot for real. But the video quality isn't good enough for more than I would want to post on YouTube. I certainly wouldn't use it for videography. Also, there is a tendency in my camera for it to drop a second or two's worth of frames, especially at the beginning of recording, or if there is too much rapid movement. As for flying by FPV via your phone, I'd advise against it. I've tried my iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, and iPhone 6, and the lag even when flying within 3 feet of the copter is too delayed to maneuver reliably in real-time. I've also tried my iPad Air to see if it made a difference, but sadly, it did not.The fit and finish of this X8W quad and its accessories is a cut above the X5 class quads that I have and have seen. More rugged/robust parts, better packaging, better instructions and you get an ACTUAL PRINTED INSTRUCTION BOOKLET! It may be the closest to a perfectly-written manual that I have ever seen included with a quadcopter to date! Covers all advertised features, is accurate to the model in the box, has decently-written English that you don't need to "auto-translate" the meanings of the translator in, and has decently-sized and clear lettering that you don't need a magnifying glass to read. I was up and running with very little delay.Opportunity for improvement? My quadcopter wouldn't lift off at first, and I had to go back and look at my propellers to figure out that I had messed-up with selecting my 4th propeller because there was not a "B2" propeller. Just 2 "B1"s, so I had mistakenly grabbed another "A2" instead. Thankfully, the included spare set of propellers had a "B2" propeller included, so I was able to swap it out and get flying quickly once I realized what I had done wrong. My recommendations: If you are serious us about aerial video, this may not be the right Syma package for you. If you want to "fly by wire" via the onboard video camera, you might find this frustrating. But if you just want a fun and stable non-acrobatic quadcopter that offers you the ability to see near-real-time video from up above, then this is a good starter set to learn on. I've read and heard that these Syma 8X class quadcopters are strong enough to carry a GoPro if desired, so that might be an interim step which could yield you useable HD video footage without breaking the bank. But I'd DEFINITELY upgrade the 4 brush motors to brushless ones if I were going to put that kind of load on the quad. (They are VERY easy to swap-out and require NO soldering to replace!). Also, the included battery charger is SLOW in charging the battery. I had a couple of decent balanced battery chargers from my helicopters that charge batteries faster already, and it makes a huge difference. I also immediately purchased 3 Tenergy 2200mAh batteries so that I could have enough power to scratch my flight itch before running out of juice. 😀 The Tenergy batteries seem to last a minute or 3 longer than the stock 2000mAh battery included with the Syma, which is pretty-much what I expected. I'm including a side-by-side photo of my 8XW and X5SW-1 so that you can see the relative size of the larger quadcopter as well.I hope that this review is helpful to anyone considering getting started with a quadcopter, or just looking to move up from a micro, or X5-class quadcopter. Personally, even if I had a DJI Phantom, I'd still fly this X8W on a daily basis because of the ease of flight, and lower cost to repair and replace parts.

Very fun. Amazing value for anyone looking to get into flying full size quadcopters without dumping a ton of money into one. Doesn't have any of the fancy features, but its fast, fun, durable and easy to fly.

Awesome drone, very durable!
Very durable drone, you can not break this thing up, its my first drone, and im very happy with it, It will crash, but its also easy to fly, camera is ok, except their is no sd card in this unit, you can share pics but haven't found a way to share any videos directly from the app, it saves everything in the app folder, but good for beginners, be careful not to over trim it, messing with the trim switches can make the drone feel broke when its not, make sure all trim settings are in the middle, via the little screen on remote, if its flying funny, check the screen, if you see more then one dot by the trim gauge, move it until it shows one dot, that fixed my issue of it vering left real bad, it goes very very high, has more distance then you really need, I don't recommend trying to go further then you can see it, battery last 10 to 15 minutes, depending how you fly, hi or low speed, headless mode is the way to fly, doesn't have return home, but its a great drone for beginners, I never nnoticed any drop outs ..it gets 5 stars cause of the pounding it can take, and it does what its suppose to do.

It's OK
Easy to fly and battery lasts a little over 10 minutes. Don't bother with the camera because the resolution is poor and if it's moving, even just in you hand, the streaming is erratic. At first I limited my flying in a gym and it there were no problems. This week (mid Feb) I flew it the first time outdoors and was disappointed with the range of the transmitter. At an altitude of about 75 feet control was lost. Fortunately it dropped several feet and control was reestablished. All in all it is worth the Prime price of $52. I've flown RC airplanes for over 50 years but this was my first quad. It's big enough to see and I'm getting pretty good at flying it. It has never crashed so I can't say how sturdy it might be. You'll want to buy more batteries. I got two more foe $20. I wish there was a better transmitter but for the price it's unreasonable to expect better.

Takes a beating and keeps on repeating!
I am a first time drone operator and owner. For this price this Drone exceeded my expectations. I have finally learned to navigate OK , but along the way this quadcopter took a beating. I flew it into pine trees. It took off and landed on all four legs a 1/2 mile away- i was lucky to find it in a parking lot just sitting there waiting for me! Now that I understand how it flies better, I feel more in control. After a few weeks I removed the blade guards which makes flying easier, but i would recommend keep them on at first. I really love this toy and have had a lot of fun learning with it. The camera is OK, and since it sends the image via WiFi, you will lose the image once it is past a few hundred feet. i bought one spare battery which i recommend doing if you are going to fly a lot. I takes a long time to charge the battery. Other than that this is a great drone to learn on.

Got this as a Christmas gift and it provides lots of fun. Definitely takes some time to master how to control it. Set up wasn't too bad, but be aware of how the blades are placed. Didn't realize there was a difference until after a failed maiden voyage. The camera works well too.

For the price, you won't find anything better
Arrived well before the expected delivery date, super fun to fly, camera gets a little glitchy when the drone is far away from the controller but otherwise amazing. For the price, you won't find anything better. Great for beginners, friend calls it "the poor mans phantom"
