Dinotopia [DVD]

Most of the characters are very unlikeable but when you remember this is made mainly for children and the adult actors are supposed to be playing children it makes it a bit more bearable. It’s apparently better than the other Dinotopia series!

My partner first enjoyed this series on television when it was first aired and after trying to describe it to me unsuccessfully she convinced me to buy this DVD. She got to enjoy this series all over again and I got to see it for the first time; I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed it considering the low budget special effects that accompany a televisions series from Channel 4, however, the plot was interesting and the overall product was good.

I'll try to put aside my personal love for the mini-series due to nostalgia whilst reviewing this product, and give my honest opinion after watching it once more as an adult rather than a child.First for the good points:The story is still magical, even now. So much seems to happen in these episodes- from the two brothers trying to find a way to survive in (and escape) this new world, to them finally accepting their place in it. The culture is so rich and fantastical, that even now I feel drawn into it.It is also a brilliant film for the family, but more for the children than the adults.It is also creative, with quite a lot of imagination thrown into it.And finally, I, personally, don't think the graphics are too bad (I've seen-and enjoyed- worse).However, there are also some bad points. I must admit, the acting isn't brilliant. Unfortunately, it does kind of lessen the experience a bit, but for children, this is something that can be easily ignored.Also, the Dinotopia world does seem a little too innocent. I don't find this too much of a drawback, especially seeing as that doesn't stop a certain bad guy from acting bad, or certain figures or authority from acting like arrogant fools, but for some, it might still be a little childish for their tastes.Then there's the concept. The mini-series is one filled with scientific flaws, and those who despise excessive false 'movie science' in films or programmes might find this one unwatchable, what with the sunstones which ward off all 'bad' dinosaurs, or the fact that good dinosaurs can talk, and then there's the part where dinosaurs coexist with humans in the first place, and haven't seemed to evolve much, beyond creating a 'Saurian' language.Finally, there's the graphics. While I see little wrong with the graphics, others who are too used to the realistic graphics of today might find them too unrealistic to bare.So, overall, I rate this mini-series four stars, as in my opinion, it is an excellent film for children, and even for thosr in touch with their inner child. But, at the end of the day, it isn't a perfect film, and as such loses a star for the negatives mentioned above.

Excellent series and excellent graphics for it time

I saw this live on tv years ago, and bought the video, which is now useless. Bearing in mind its age, it is very good, and the special effects are on a par with many of today's effort. The acting is good, and you can actually hear what they are saying.

This is the better of the 2 series in my opinion. Hard to believe that this is ten years old! With high production values, superb music and a flowing script and good acting, this is easily one of my favourite childhood films of all time.Despite the small changes from the original material, this encapsulates the style of the books really well. Well worth your time and money.

A great film/ series to have and well worth the purchase from the seller. This was actually for a friend as a gift so cannot comment too much on this but, needless to say that it is a good series and full of great special effects and talented actors and actresses. Just buy and enjoy this before you regrety it as it is becoming rare nowadays.

Pure childhood nostalgia, and charming fun movie

I saw this movie series on Prime. Then I heard about the other tv series. So thought Id see if I could get the movies first. Sold out.. and hey presto.!!! A copy popped up.. so I bought the movies. I didn't realize that this price included EVERYTHING...!! ALL the movies and the TV series... Wow.. soo surprised when got the discs to find out it was everything.. So satisfied with this.. just wish there were more... Thanks so much...
