Does this have any metal parts? Thinking of using it as an aquarium decoration.

There are no metal pieces, all traditional plastic LEGO parts. It is a heavy enough set that it would probably stay down. There is a storage compartment in the middle you could put some ballast in (or under) to keep it down.

I'm thinking about getting this set as my first the force awakens lego set. is it worth it?

This is easily one of the best sets for the force awakens. Its a great build at a fantastic price. I highly recommend this one.

Is this for a young child or for an 8 year old lego master?

Really depends on your child. My son has loved legos from age 4 and was able to do this one by himself at age 6. Its a well constructed speeder and younger children will like it and wont find it to hard of a build if they are used to building legos.
