Ultimate Ears Super.fi 3 Studio Earphones (White) (Discontinued by Manufacturer)

My basic requirement for headphones or speakers is that they sound fabulous when my playback device equalization is set flat. I listen mostly to classical music, and I don't believe in juicing up my music with artificial sweeteners. I'm a purist. I want to hear recordings the way they were made. My Cowon IAudio7 player sounds superb with flat equalization through my Grado SR80 headphones, and I was hoping that the UE3 earphones would deliver similarly. Unfortunately, they didn't. The bass just wasn't there. I had to fiddle with the equalization (which the IAudio7 has in spades) to get the sound I wanted.That said, I have come to love these little cans. I try to forget that my controls aren't precisely flatlined and just enjoy the music. Here are some of the many good points about these earphones:1. Once I achieved the tonal equalization I wanted, I began to appreciate the clarity of the sound. These phones don't deliver conspicuous, hot sound. They are subtle and natural. They had to grow on me. Give them a week before you return them in disappointment.2. They have a thick, stiff cord that doesn't get tangled so easily as other earphones. The cord seems pretty durable and less noisy brushing against the clothes than many others. Also, the V cord meets at the middle under the chin with a slide adjuster. I don't care for side cords. Additionally, the stiff cord doesn't flop around a lot when I'm on the treadmill. I usually run it under my shirt.3. Inserting the earphones properly takes a little practice--the manual explains a "rock and roll" method to twist them into your ear canals. Once you select the appropriately sized pad from the enclosed selection and twist them in correctly, you will hear natural, tonally balanced sound (except for some bass deficit) and an effective soundstage. The snug fit blocks most outside sound, so you won't have to turn up the volume to dangerous levels to compete with the outside world. They sound great on the noisy city bus. I haven't tried them on a plane yet.4. The stiff cords loop over the ears, increasing stability. I work out with these earphones all the time. They don't pop out. Occasionally, I get a pocket of sweat between my earpad and eardrum so that everything sounds a bit underwater. I don't know if there is any remedy for that, other than to stop sweating.Here are some negatives:1. The earpads are devilishly difficult to fit over the earphones. I was afraid I would rip them. The instructions say to twist them on gently. Gentleness didn't work for me. I had to struggle with them for quite awhile. In fact, I got to the point where I called the company to arrange sending them back. It was late at night, the phone support was off duty, so I struggled some more and finally got them on. The good news is that they're unlikely to come off in the ears, so hopefully you won't have to excavate earpads out of your ear canals with tweezers like I have had to do with my Sonys. I settled for the medium sized pads. I was afraid to remove them and try any other sizes. They fit snugly in my ears. Once you get this part worked out--suffer a little for your music--you will enjoy the results.2. The bass. I'm not a hip hop listener, so I don't need to set off car alarms with my bass, but when I listen to an orchestra, I like to hear some chesty growl in the bass viols and cellos and a good visceral thump from the bass drum. I twiddled and eventually found my sound, but I think more low end should be the default.Summary: A great sounding though bass shy pair of earphones that effectively block outside noise, making it possible to listen to music at comfortable, safe levels. Set up is a bother, but following that hurdle, and once you have mastered effective insertion techniques and perhaps run up the bass controls a little, you should enjoy accurate, balanced and comfortable listening through a sturdily designed and cool looking device.Warning: Set the volume low the first time you listen through these earphones. They have plenty of natural gain and don't require a high setting. Depending on what you have listened through up till now, if you don't lower your volume setting, you may blast your eardrums the first time you use these. The manual includes this same warning. Pay attention to it.

My much anticipated new Super.fi 3 headphones arrived today.After carefully reading the manual I inserted them in my ears, plugged in my mp3 player and checked them out.The very first impression I got was that I must have put them in wrong because the sound was REALLY mid-rangey with very little low end.I've been a musician for almost 30 years, and a lover of music all my life. I listen to all genres of music.I've auditioned these monitors with a lot of different music from solo piano, to vocal/guitar, to studio jazz/rock.My conclusion is that these earphones are:1. Definitely very good at blocking outside noise. They are basically ear plugs with a speaker in them.2. Definitely NOT flat in their frequency response. Low end is very weak, mid range is overly prominant. They sound weird and un-natural.3. They have a very unique sound which is overly mid-rangey. The effect is that vocals have a kind of hollow sound. The vocals almost sound like somebody put too much reverb or delay on them. Probably a matter of frequency response.4. Isolation is obviously very good because your head is in the way.5. They are very efficient so you don't need to crank the volume to hear the music over backround noise.6. They sound like regular $20 ear buds, just pushed farther into the ear to block extraneous sound and deliver the sound more deeply into the ear canal.I think I'll probably really like them on the subway because they REALLY block outside noise. Perhaps a little tweaking of the EQ will help.UPDATE:I've gotten used to these earphones and do infact really enjoy them on the subway due to the isolation/efficiency they have. EQ does help, but I can never seem to get a really natural sound using the EQ built into consumer devices I don't generally use it. I've ended up using the double-flanged silicon ear pieces which seem to work the best for me. They offer the most isoltation and seem to deliver the sound deeper into my ear canel which has improved the sound quality considerably. I'm still not sure they are worth what I paid for them. Perhaps the more expensive models deliver a more impressive performance. There are less expensive options out there which I believe probably sound as good.

These are good headphones, no question, though it does take a while to get used to the over-the-ear thing. I also use them for playing the guitar - useful for cutting out background 'strum' and getting a pure sound straight from the amp.However, had no problems with comply foam tips. They are pricey to replace and do look a bit grubby after a week or so on the tube, but found you can clean them with soapy water and re-use them a couple of times.Handheld Audio are good - one of the cables broke (ironically just below the bit where it is actually supposed to plug in and out of the earpiece) about 15 months after I bought these - they pointed out the warranty was two years and repaired them very quickly, free, no questions. Handheld also sell the foam tips quite cheaply, too.

The sound on these is not as powerful in terms of bass (the bass on the sony mdr-xb20ex is by far the most in your face bass I have experienced) BUT these sound like the music is being performed in an auditorium where you are the only one in it and you got the front row seat.Almost perfect. They don't fit that well though.

Bought these 3 weeks ago and they are very good ,but compared to some phillips £30 earphones not a amazing difference you dont really notice that much difference, i have a good 16 gb Sony MP3 player player that is twinned with them, try before you buy.Trev McDougall

Einige Rezensionen hier kann ich nicht nachvollziehen, man sollte sich nicht abschrecken lassen, die Teile sind gut und ihr Geld wert.Vorher hatte ich die In-Ears die beim Sony NWZ A 818 B mitgeliefert werden. Auch den Sennheiser Cx300 und die mitgelieferten des IPod kenne ich. Die beiden letztgenannten sind zweifelsohne gut wenn man "neues Zeug" hört (entschuldigt den Ausdruck, aber ich glaube ihr wisst was ich meine) und wo man vielleicht nicht SO 100% nur auf den Klang achtet.Beim Sony und den mitgelieferten In-Ears hörte ich bis jetzt den besten Klang, dummerweise hatten die einen Kabelbruch. Aufgrund einiger guten Reszensionen hier und anderswo habe ich mir also die Ultimat Ears 3 hier gekauft. Hier meine Kurzbewertung:Preis:Geht für mich voll okay. Qualität kostet eben vielleicht manchmal etwas mehr. Aber vorsicht, siehe nächster Eintrag, die sind vieleicht nicht für jeden das richtige und evtl. geben einige unnötig Geld aus.Sound:======Also da kommt es vielleicht auch auf den Musikgeschmack an, aber ich höre hiermit Details die mir vorher entgangen sind. Das Gesamte Klangbild ist sehr ausgewogen, ich bemerke weder fehlende Bässe, zu heftige Höhen oder ähnliches. Und da kommt auch schon die erste Einschränkung, nur auf meinem Sony MP3 Player, als ich sie in einen IPod steckte stimmte es irgendwie nicht so ganz. Da klangen Sie irgendwie schwach. Ich habe aber dummerweise nicht meine alten Sonys In-Ears an einem IPod probiert und auf dem iPod war nicht die Musik die ich normalerweise höre deshalb kann ich nicht genau sagen was da so genau fehlt, aber die Mitten waren mir etwas zu heftig und die Höhen und Tiefen etwas zuwenig am iPod. Es mag an der Music (Techno, Hip-Hop etc.) auf dem iPod gelegen haben oder am iPod selber, weiß ich nicht, bleibe ich also bei meinem Sony.Metallica (neuere Stücke), also ich kann die angesprochenden fehlenden Bässe in einigen Resezionen hier nicht nachvollziehen. Genau so soll sich Musik anhören.Motörhead, sicherlich nicht die beste Musik um Kopfhörer zu testen, ;) aber auch hier sehr rundes Gesamtbild.Metallica (ältere Stücke), Torry Amos, Pink Floyd, Bethooven, ich habe Details gehört die ich sonst noch nie gehört habe, gerade bei letzterem.Eine Einschränkung muss ich leider machen, ich höre mit diesen Hörern leider auch verstärkt negative Details die mir sonst kaum aufgefallen sind. (Rauschen, Knacken etc.) Also unter 256KB MP3 sollte man diese Hörer am besten nicht verwenden.Sonstiger "Sound"=================Also wenn man die mit den richtgen Ausätzen verwendet hört man wirklich kaum Außengeräusche, der Körperschall ist auch kaum wahrnehmbar.Tragekomfort:================Gut das mit dem Bügel ist vielleicht neu, aber nicht großartig gewöhnungsbedürftig, einmal die Bügel richtig gebogen reichte bei mir, auch das mit den richtigen Ohrgummis war kein Problem, bis auf die ganz großen Schaumstoffgummis habe ich alle ausprobiert, und die mit denen die ausgeliefert werden passten mir am besten. So weit rausstehen tun die eigentlich auch nicht und das mit dem Kabel hinter dem Ohr ist eine ziemlich gut Idee, bei mir verutscht da kaum etwas. Warum hier einige immer an diesen Bügeln nachbiegen müssen verstehe ich nicht.Drei winzige Kleinigkeiten gibt es da die mich etwas stören.-Also mir ist das Kabel etwas zu kurz, wenn ich die Kabel hinter den Kopf führe, da reicht es gerade mal für die hintere Hosentasche und da möchte ich meinen Player eigentlich nicht reintun.-Der Hörer hat leider einen Winkelstecker, ich befürchte das wird an der Stelle bald zum Kabelbruch führen.-Die Kabel selber erscheinen mir etwas steif.Fazit:=========Klare Kaufempfehlung, 5 Sterne, aber wenn man die Möglichkeit hat sollte man vorher testen ob der für seinen Musikgeschmack und MP3 Player überhaupt wesentlich Vorteile bringt oder vielleicht sogar Nachteile.Ob ich mir die nochmal kaufe? Vielleicht nicht ;) ich kann es mir zwar kaum vorstellen wie die klingen mögen und wie die noch besser sein können, aber vielleicht doch mal die Ultimate 10. (Hängt aber auch davon ab wie lange die 3 "haltbar" sind, mal abwarten)EDIT:Nachdem ich die jetzt etwas länger habe. So ganz 100% zufrieden bin ich mit dem Tragekomfort leider nicht mehr. Ich habe alle Aufsätze durchprobiert und den Bügel mehrmals neu gebogen, irgendwie... Also wenn man sich bewegt, z.B. Radfahren, irgendwie habe ich häufig das Gefühl das die Hörer verrutschen. Verlegen des Kabels hinter den Kopf hilft zwar einiges, trotzdem muss ich ab und zu nochmal die Hörer ins Ohr drücken. Am liebsten würde ich einen Stern abziehen. Aber das geht hier leider nicht.

Ich besitze diese Ohrhörer seit gestern und habe sie schon ausgiebig benutzt.Der erste Eindruck ist gut.Ich habe sie gekauft, da die mitgelieferten Ohrhörer meines Mp3players  Samsung YP Z5 FZ Tragbarer MP3-Player 1 GB 1,8 Zoll / 5 cm TFT-Farbdisplay mit FM Tuner schwarz  (2gb version) den Geist aufgegeben haben.Diese boten jedoch schon sehr guten Sound, und hatten nen Goldstecker.Nun zum UE Super-fi 3:SOUND:Der Klang ist gut bis sehr gut, schön ausgewogen und größtenteils unaufdringlich.Trotzdem wirkt er ab und zu etwas komprimiert, vor allem wenn man beim Hören durch die Gegend läuft usw.Der Kopfhörer dichtet das Ohr in etwa so ab, als würde man sich die Ohren zuhalten, wodurch viele Bewegungen des Körpers als dumpfer Bass wargenommen werden.Deshalb würde ich sie nicht unbedingt zum Sport und Ähnlichem empfehlen, denn die Geräusche der eigenen Schritte, Atmung oder Kiefergeräusche stören den Musikgenuss.Darüber sollte man sich also im Klaren sein und ich denke, dass das bei in-Ear-Hörer auch so üblich ist... vielleicht einfach mal mit zugehaltenen Ohren ein bisschen was essen oder rumlaufen.Diese Geräusche lassen sich natürlich durch hohe Lautstärke vertreiben, aber das ist dann auch nicht gesund.Möglicherweise gewöhnt man sich an das alles, jetzt beim Schreiben ist der Sound sehr gut und klar aber nicht soo außergewöhnlich wie manche Rezensionen vermuten lassen.Wenn man 10€ Kopfhörer gewöhnt ist, ist es denke ich schon ein großer Unterschied und man wird auf jeden Fall mehr von der Musik wahrnehmen.Probleme auf Grund der Niederohmigkeit habe ich mit meinem Player keine. Auch 128-bit mp3's klingen gut, aber den Unterschied zu besseren Bitraten hört man schon. In dieser Hinsicht kann ich den Musik Onlineshop vom Blödmarkt empfehlen. Dort gibt es sehr viel Auswahl als 192kbit/s WMA's (leider mit DRM)TRAGEKOMFORT:Es sind nicht unbedingt Kopfhörer die man mal eben auf und wieder absetzt. Das Einsetzen ist zu Anfang ein bisschen gewöhnungsbedürftig und auf jeden Fall zeitaufwändiger als bei Ohr- oder Kopfhörern die man so kennt.Wenn sie einmal drin sind, sitzen sie wirklich gut. Auch durch Lachen, Essen oder sonstiges lösen sie sich nicht. Das im Ohrbereich verstärkte Kabel, lässt sich wie ein Bügel hinter das Ohr biegen, wo es ohne zu stören nach unten läuft.An den gewissen physischen Druck im Ohr gewöhnt man sich wahrscheinlich mit der ZeitVERARBEITUNG/ZUBEHÖR:Die Verarbeitung ist super. Die Kabelage am Super-Fi weißt zwar kein besonderes Design auf, jedoch wirken die Kabel sehr widerstandsfähig und sind etwas dicker als gewöhnlich.Die Kontakte sind vergoldet und das Kabel lässt sich ersetzen (ist per Ministecker am Ohrhörer selbst eingesteckt).Dazu gibts eine schicke Alubox, verschiedene Aufsätze zur Anpassung ans Ohr und einen Widerstand, der bei Problemen mit dem Sound zwischen Player und Kopfhörer gesteckt werden kann.Mehr gibt es aus meiner Sicht nicht zu sagen. Sicherlich ist eine Steigerung in Komfort und Klangqualität möglich, aber das kostet dann auch mehr.FAZIT:Insgesamt bin ich mit dem Kauf zufrieden, hätte aber mehr Klang erwartet, meine alten ähnlich guten Ohrhörer gabs schließlich gratis zum Mp3player dazu.Auf jeden Fall werden sie länger halten und das Musikhören macht SpaßIch kann sie allen empfehlen, die vollständige Isolierung, einen ausgewogenen Klang und guten Sitz für den alltäglichen Gebrauch möchten.
