Q: Does te cookling bowl detach from the base for cleaning? thank you.

Yes it does. Flip it over and look at the bottom. There is a LOCK there (turn to unlock). The base that holds it and the electric plug detach. It will not look like a non-electric wok when detached and DO NOT try to use it as one. You can, however, after detaching wash, the bowl part. Then after it is dried, flip it upside down again, set the base on it and re-lock. For the most part, I only clean mine out with a wet paper towel. I have detached it just to test it and did wash the bowl but... the non-stick interior keeps it really clean inside so...I personally wipe it out.

Q: Does this wok have non-stick surface?

This is NOT a stainless steel wok. The pan contains a PTFE coating that has recently been totally banned by the European Union. It emits gases at temperatures above 350 or when heated without contents in the wok. Ironically, the directions state that you get the best cooking results when you pre-heat the wok to the high temperatures before adding the ingredients. DuPont also warns about the dangers of scratching the surface. It is a ‘forever’ chemical which means it does not degrade in the environment. The gases emitted at high temperatures are potentially toxic to birds in the home, which is kind of a canary in the coal mine story. Read up on this before you buy!

Q: Has anyone ever used a wok with gas? If so, how does this electric one compare to that?

I have used electric and gas woks. On my stove top, the gas did not get hot enough to work properly. I don't think the sides heated up well with gas. I have not had this problem with good quality electric woks.

Q: Can this be used to cook hot pot?

Yes, and that's one of the very best uses for it. We use it for our Sukiyaki and udon dishes, and our favorite Japanese Hot Pot that we have adapted from The Two Hot Tamales recipe. It has chicken, Napa cabbage, spinach, carrot, tofu, daikon, shiritake yam noodles, instant dash and Nihaizu sauce. (You can get a recipe for the sauce online. Enjoy.
