Well designed hiking book.
The book shows each island starting in the south and moves north. All the hiking trails are shown with suggestions of which hikes are best if you can't do them all. Shows where the buses stop in reference to the trail head and pictures of the views from the trail. The book is a nice size so you can easily take it along with you on the hike

Not Recommended
Just got back from Azores and would not recommend this book. Did a few hikes and the descriptions were not accurate. One hike in particular stands out. "Follow the trail" should have said "bring a machete and wear thick clothing". Trail was barely passable and our arms and legs got cut up from branches.

Already out of date; use the government website instead
I picked up this book before a week on São Miguel in November 2021. Mr. Dillon writes in his introduction that the book is more or less a collection of the official marked walking trails of the Azores, all of which can be found on the Azorean government website (trails.visitazores.com).Many trails have changed since publication. For example 1. new bridges have been built where the book says a river must be forded (this was a nice surprise); 2. bridges have been washed away and the route is no longer passable (not a nice surprise); 3. an entire trail has been private property for a few years and has been barricaded with barbed wire and logs; 4. one recommended trail has been closed long enough that a "no entry" sign has been carved into a rock blocking the path. Please do yourself a favor and check the government website (which has a trail finder by location/difficulty/length and full maps of all trails) before attempting any of the trails in this book. Better yet, just use the website to find the trails and skip this book altogether.

Good routes scatters across all islands
A good mix of pleasant routes across all islands. Paths in the isles are marked and reasonable to find but this book just makes life easier and sends you to places you might otherwise not think of going.GPS routes a bonus but not really necessary.

A helpful guide to some good walking on the Azores
A good compendium of walks on the Azores. Trail maps are helpful but the text directions are hard to follow - good job the trails are so well waymarked! I used the book to overview several walks but used my 'Alltrails' app to follow the route on the ground and adapt the route taken.
