The Legendary Legend Continues, Legendarily
A Snake Lies Waiting is the 3rd in Macmillan's continuing translations of Jin Yong aka Louis Cha's Legend of Condor Heroes series. When we last left Guo Jing, he had successfully impressed/angered Lotus's creepy dad after defeating Ouyang Feng's rapey nephew in a contest of wits, then boarded a doomed ship with Count Seven and Brother Zhou. As indicated by the title of this 3rd book, the famous Venom of the West takes a bigger role in the story as our heroes Guo Jing and the indomitable Lotus Huang continue on their adventures and encounters with China's masters, while the Wanyans continue their efforts to bribe literally everyone in the empire. My review of this work is the same as the prior two: it's totally friggin awesome! As I do not know the original Chinese text, I cannot speak to the quality of the translation. But these book are rip roaring good fun and I am constantly delighted by Cha's characters, storytelling, and action sequences. I found this to be the most humorous of the 3 parts thusfar, with a lot of backstabbing, pettiness, and bizarre use of animals.Being able to read this legendary series is a delight. Finally I get to enjoy the source material for the kung fu movies and TV series it spawned, and all the other wuxia content that it inspired. I read that this is going to be a 12 part series, so we're getting the entire trilogy, folks! And I hope at the same rapid pace that we got the first 4 books.I wish Macmillan would do audiobooks of this series. Kudos to the translators!

great story but....
Overall, great story. I love the fact that someone has finally translated this. However, the one thing that aggravates me to no end are the names. The names are inconsistent and almost silly, especially if you already know the characters and the story (which I do). For example, if Huang Yaoshi is called "Apothecary Huang" and Huang Rong is called "Lotus Huang", then shouldn't Guo Jing be called "Calmness Guo"? And why just translate half the name? Go all the way and translate the entire name literally. "Apothecary of the Yellow River", father of "Lotus of the Yellow River". Or Hong Qigong should be called "Flood 7th Maternal Grandfather". BC that's the literal translation for those names. That would sound silly. Okay, but Apothecary Huang doesn't sound silly? Just call him Huang Yaoshi. Every time I come across the name "Lotus" I have to make a cognitive effort to tell myself, "that's Huang Rong", so I know who is being referred to. It's very distracting while trying to read. Now they did keep Yang Kang's and Zhou Botong's name intact. Great job! But why? And then...Count 7 Hong? NO! It's Hong Qigong. For perspective, if you were to translate "John Wayne" in to Chinese, you wouldn't call him "Xishoujian Huoche zhizhao shang 洗手間 貨車製造商 (literal translation: Toilet Wagonmaker). Just call him 約翰韋恩. (john wayne).

Lotus and Guo Jing take center stage
Could not ask to be more involved in a world that I don’t want to leave! I almost wish there weren’t other things to read so I could stay here.

Fantastic Series
Love Jin Yong's writings and Anna Holmwood's translations of the Condor Heroes series are the best I've read, by far.A LOT of time & effort must have been put into this translation and editing - the books maintain a great flow and I didn't catch a single typo amongst all 3 volumes. Hats off to Anna Holmwood!

The west winds tore through the valley…
.. the river was turbulent, the torrential rains smashed into the earth..and the story has almost reached the last volume! On the wings of condors, the dreams of the patriots blossom,A hero & heroine march onward to the rising sun.I’m captivated by such an awesome story, indeed I’ve read three volumes in 3 days! I shall now move to the last volume and consume the details of how the story culminates. This collection is, without doubt, one of the best I’ve read in many years. The style, content and pace is of a quality not often equalled. I say this; read it, you’ll not be disappointed.I’m going to look at buying a hardback collection of the story and read it numerous times.

Page one
Page 1, row 3: “Ten cypresses... leaves red like fire.” From the original text, it should be Chinese tallow tree instead of cypress.

Different size then other 2 books
Love the series. Unfortunately the book's dimensions listed are wrong. Doesn't look good on a shelf when the last book is smaller then the other 2.
