My first grade son reads these. I like the subject matter because it doesn't include fighting/superheroes/name brands/etc. What surprised me was that my son likes them too. They are engaging for him - the topics are age appropriate so they appeal to him. The reading level is perfect for him - there are enough common words that it is not too much of a struggle, but there are always a few words he needs to work at which keeps it just the right amount of challenging. Every night he has to read for 20 minutes and he always picks a Henry & Mudge book. This pack is a great value vs buying them separately. We already had a few of them, but I bought it anyway and donated the ones we already had to my son's teacher. She was VERY happy as these are the perfect books for a first grade classroom library as well. They were a very affordable gift and it made my son so proud to be able to donate to his classroom.

I'm so glad I bought these! My son is 6 and in his second semester of kindergarten. His teacher has said he is somewhat advanced in reading for his grade level, probably because he took pre-k. He hates when its time to read, but you know what, these books havent been the worst thing in the world for him. He loves the pictures, always comments on them, and I see him turn the page because he actually wants to continue reading, he WANTS to know what happens next. I've timed him and it takes him 20 minutes to read each book, which is how long his teacher wants them reading daily anyway. The best part is he isn't daunted by so many words on each page. They have just enough for him to read confidently, yet still be challenged and building his reading fluency. Definitely ordering more. Great price for the set of 6.

Excellent children’s books- wholesome and about a healthy family life-with a big dog as a bonus! These were included in backpacks made to comfort children who had to be removed suddenly from their homes and put into emergency foster care.

Be careful. If you give this as a present and you are there when it's opened, you will be reading it. Every book. Likely more than once. Henry & Mudge's stories are beloved for a reason-- a certain old fashioned sweetness and plot lines that resonates with kids. For reading aloud? Ages 3-6 (at least).

Great starter set of books for kindergartner. Some challenging words but good for recognizing new vocabulary. Short chapters with a few sentences on each page and some repetitive wording. There are pictures throughout entire book. Kids are excited to read their own chapter book! Story is simple and keeps their interest to read more.

Perfect gift for my niece! She loved the books and the illustrations.

It is difficult to find first readers that actually are first readers. I tutor people with language weaknesses/dyslexia. When students begin coming to me for remediation, their self-esteem and confidence are around their ankles. Until they start regaining the confidence they had before they became "poor/striving/struggling readers", it is important they have books that support what I am teaching. The Henry and Mudge series works well, especially for students who love dogs. The text isn't as controlled as I like, but the words are more in line with grade-level vocabulary and subject matter than most of the books I review for use.

I loved these books growing up. Used to make my dad go to the library so I could check them out over and over again. I used to ask him to reenact may of the things from the stories. Very excited to be able to buy them as a set to now read to my son.

These cute, read-alone stories are about a lonely little boy who befriends a very big dog and the adventures they go on together, so both boys and girls will love them. This set contains the first six books in the Henry and Mudge series, all of which are attractively illustrated and are intended for children who are just beginning to read books without mum or dad's help. They make a great gift for new readers and receive a thumbs-up from me.
