I have a few can openers but ordered this one for someone who has mobility challenges and who is only left hand dominant. This can opener was a challenge to use for the individual and is not relative to this item. I am ambidextrous so I was able to open the can using both hands. I was especially pleased with how the can opened as there are truly no sharp edges however, it took some time to get use to literally lifting the lids up verses having to use a fork, spoon or knife to lift the lid, if that makes sense. Truth be told, I had no idea that I completely opened the lid because the lid never lifted and the seams seemed untouched and that is because opener neatly slices the outer lip or ridge of the can. This is where you will need to hold and lift the lid. The old traditional can openers open the cans from the inside of the lip which forces the need of a utensil to lift the lid from the inside. I gave the item 3 stars for sturdiness because I do not believe that the plastic handle will last. Perhaps the merchant will consider having this item made from stainless steel for durability.

My husband and I are starting to have osteoarthritis in our hands. Our very old can opener was also beginning to fail as many cans are slightly damaged around the rims. I read many reviews of the fan openers offered for sale and decided to try this one. I liked the idea of no sharp edges. I am happy to say that this opener exceeded my expectations. So much easier than any manual can opener I have ever used! We are loving it and will be telling people we know about the ease of use and the safer edges of the lid and can. Turning the handle does not hurt my hand, nor does holding the opener to the can. Lifting the cut off lid is not difficult either. I am really pleased!

It might seem an odd shape, but it works better than other styles to cleanly open a can. There's no sharp edges on opened cans or lids for you or your kids to get cut on, and the mechanicals are tough enough that they should last for years. No more bent and distorted handles, or dulled or dented cutter blades, or defective gears that grind or loose a tooth. It's easy to operate by hand, and won't leave you stranded if you loose power. The lids after opening can be refit to the can, but I wouldn't treat it like it was resealable, and only as a temporary cover. Keep in mind that the lids will no longer drop into the can's contents, so if you're used to using them as a stopper or strainer, you might have to rethink how to drain liquids with them - but - that's not a reason not to use one of these for daily and heavy use when needed.

Worked for about 4 months, then started having mild trouble with short cans (e.g. cat food cans) which I discovered a work around (set the can on top of the large big can size of dog food to I dunno get a better angle?) and having trouble with any can with the pop top (aka peel off lid to make a knife lol). I ordered it June 2. Its November 10 and I only can open plain steel cans (no special lid) with reasonably tolerable trouble sometimes, aluminum cat food cans ditto, pop top cans take using this and my previous OXO brand side cut can opener which this one replaced temporarily, and creating a ton of those splinter shards and metal dust on the edge and top of the can. Today it started making a sort of skidding squeaking noise... Going to go find a better can opener, and am a bit upset that this lasted only about 6 months being used maybe once a day on average, when it cost about $17

Works

A bit expensive, counterintuitive and bulky for what it is but an excellent innovation. Opens cans from the side of top by essentially prying open its seal to the cylinder below, thus leaving absolutely no sharp or jagged edges on either lid or rest of can. Obviously too big for backpacking but perfect for car camping safety and ease of disposal. Hand strength is required but large winged turning apparatus is well designed, accommodating both left and right handed users. Removing lid from opener after use is cumbersome at first but less so over time.

It does work. No one has sliced their finger on a jagged can edge since we bought this. However, it doesn’t last. I bought it about 1.5 years ago and it’s unable to open cans now. We don’t eat an excessive number of canned products, either. Will try to find a different brand to replace this one.

Not had it long so can't comment on longevity but for now, it works a charm. Simply attach the can opener and turn away from the body until done, then turn toward the body to loosen the can opener from the can to remove the lid. It glides smoothly and you can tell when it's done as it becomes too easy to turn. Both the lid and the can are safe to touch which is lovely. It cuts the outside instead of the inside so there is not need to be fishing out sharp lids anyway. Overall easy and safe can opener suitable for left and right handers which, if it continues to work, is good value.

oh my gosh, I'm going to get one for everyone in the family for Christmas. This little gem works like magic. I still haven't figured out how it does it, but it grips the can by itself, turns effortlessly and cuts while leaving no sharp edges!!!! Amazing. Wish I knew about it sooner!
