Q: Does the camera bag have horrible smell?

A little bit but has no influence. It is better if open the backpack then let the smell evaporate

Q: Is there a chest strap to join the two shoulder straps in the front and where does that strap hit you?

No there is not a chest strap. The size of this bag doesn’t require that additional strap.

Q: Is the pocket on the outside really large enough to hold a water bottle? My current backpack has "pockets" but they're way too small.

My water bottle is 3” diameter and it fits but it’s pretty tight. A 16.9 oz bottle of water fits with no problem.

Q: What is the largest lens this case can hold? Im looking for one that can hold a telephoto lens.

My 100-300 zoom fits with about 100% room to spare
